Chapter 11 - Who Stole the Tarts? By Caro
The King and Queen of Hearts were seated on their throne when they arrived, with a great crowd assembled about them. The Knave was standing before them in chains. Alice had never been in a court of justice before but was pleased that she had read about it and knew nearly everything there. The King was the judge and the jurors were twelve creatures.
The King ordered to read the accusation to which the Rabbit read, “The Queen of Heart, she made some tarts, all on a summer day; the Knave of Hearts, he stole those tarts and took them quite away!” once finish the King asked for a verdict and the Rabbit denied it clamming that there was still a great deal to come. The first witness was the Hatter that came in with teacup and piece of bread. When the Hatter took off his hat the Queen stared at him making him turn pale and fidgeted.
Alice felt a very curious sensation and noticed that she was beginning to grow larger again. When the Queen saw the Dormouse she called for the list of singers at the concert and the King asked for his evidence. The Hatter was so nervous that called the March Hare who denied everything he said and the Dormouse who had fallen fast asleep. The next witness was the Duchess’s cook who was not of much help and then disappeared. The King called for more witnesses and to Alice’s surprise the Rabbit yelled “Alice!”

Memorable Quotes
Narrator: “Alice could see, as well as if she were looking over their shoulders, that all the jurors were writing down `stupid things!' on their slates, and she could even make out that one of them didn't know how to spell `stupid,' and that he had to ask his neighbour to tell him. `A nice muddle their slates'll be in before the trial's over!' thought Alice. “
Rabbit: “The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts, All on a summer day: The Knave of Hearts, he stole those tarts, And took them quite away!”
King: “You ought to have finished, when did you begin?”
Hatter: “Fourteenth of March, I think it was.”
March Hare: “Fifteenth”
Dormouse:”Sixteenth”
King: “Write that down”
King: “Give your evidence, and don't be nervous, or I'll have you executed on the spot.”
Alice: “Don’t talk nonsense, you know you’re growing too.”
Dormouse: “Yes, but I grow at a reasonable pace, not in that ridicules fashion.”
Hatter: “I'm a poor man, your Majesty, and I hadn't begun my tea--not above a week or so--and what with the bread-and-butter getting so thin--and the twinkling of the tea--'
King: “The twinkling of the what?”
Hatter: “It began with the tea”
King: “Of course twinkling begins with a T! Do you take me for a dunce? Go on!”
