Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Chapter 2: The Pool of Tears
Written by Rose
Edited by

After Alice finished the cake she started to grow, in fact, she grew so tall her head hit the ceiling. She took the key from the table and made her way to unlock the door behind the curtain, alas, she was too big now and with no way to shrink again Alice began to cry.

As she considered her situation, the White Rabbit returned talking about keeping the Duchess waiting and dropped his white glove and fan at the sight of Alice. Hot, Alice began to fan herself as she considered pondered how different she felt and who she could be. Suddenly, Alice realizes that she is wearing the White Rabbit’s glove and shrinking dramatically, taking it off just in time.

Running back to the door Alice finds the door closed once again and the key back on the glass table. Just about to give up, Alice’s foot slips and she finds herself swimming in her own tears. Everything today was strange and now she was swimming in a pool of tears with a mouse at her side. Becoming tired Alice called to the mouse for help, first in English and finally in French. As they swim Alice talks of cats and dogs, which repulse the mouse, and he finally tells her to follow him ashore and he will tell her why he hates cats and dogs.

Memorable Quotes

Alice: “Curiouser and curiouser!”

White Rabbit: “Oh! The Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! Wo’n’t she be savage if I’ve kept her waiting!”

Alice:How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail, And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws!

Alice: “I wish I hadn’t cried so much!” said Alice, as she swam about, trying to find her way out. “I shall be punished for it now, I suppose, by being drowned in my own tears! That will be a queer thing, to be sure! However, everything is queer to-day.”

Mouse: “No like cats!” cried the Mouse in a shrill, passionate voice. “Would you like cats, if you were me?”

Questions for consideration:

Do you think the White Rabbit’s glove is a metaphor for something?

Why do you think Alice compares herself to other children when she’s having trouble with her size?

Did you find anything else in this chapter curious? If so, what?

I'm sure it is. I don't know what for though.

Why do you think Alice compares herself to other children when she’s having trouble with her size?
Maybe because she doesn't feel like herself.

I found her conversation with the mouse curious.

Yea I think Lewis Carroll used a lot of metaphors in his work. What it is I couldn't tell you, but i'm certain here are many laid within the text.

For example, I think the way Alice compares herself to other children when she's having issues with her height, maybe she feels a little awkward in real life that the other children are all growing and she isn't. Some children are highly insecure at Alice's age because they want nothing more than to fit in, but hormonal changes are making everyone change around her, but her.

That's a good point. She may be insecure for those reasons. It was interesting that she didn't want to be Mabel because she's not that bright.

Why do you think the mouse responded to Alice when she spoke French, but didn’t reply in French but in English?

I found this odd. Everything about perception is off in this tale. From sizing, to communications between everyone.

And why did the white glove shrink her?? That was odd too.
