Chapter 3 – A Caucus Race and a Long Lost Tale - By Rose

Reaching the bank, all the animals discussed an fuss about how they are to get dry. In order to dry, the mouse tells everyone a tale of William the Conqueror. It doesn’t work, so Dodo suggests a Caucus Race, which is to run around with no discernible course for thirty minutes. After running, they were all dry. Everyone has won the race and prizes were expected. Alice was to give everyone a prize, which she produced from her pocket, and handed comfits to all. Alice needed a prize as well, so the Dodo asks Alice for the thimble from her pocket, which he simply hands it back to her as a prize.

Alice wants to hear the tale of why the mouse dislikes cats and dogs. Before he begins, Alice mentions her cat Dinah. This disturbs everyone, so all the animals take off including the mouse. After a moment, she hears footsteps and  Alice presumes the mouse has returned.

Questions:

Why did Lory refuse to tell Alice his age if his argument was based on the fact he was older?

Do you believe the thimble holds some sort of meaning? Why is Alice carrying a thimble?

Interestingly enough, the mouse tells a tale of William the Conqueror, and in the previous chapter Alice thought the mouse 'came over' with him. How did Alice know this information?

Why do think all the animals dislike cats?

What other things did you find curious in this chapter? What were your favorite quotes?

Who were your favorite characters mentioned?

Quotes:

Duck: I know what ‘it’ means well enough, when I find a thing, it’s generally a frog or a worm. The question is, what did the archbishop find?” – Pg. 21

Alice: I wish I hadn’t mentioned Dinah! No one seems to like her down here and I’m sure she’s the best cat in the world.” – Pg 27

Why did Lory refuse to tell Alice his age if his argument was based on the fact he was older?
Maybe he wasn't sure he was actually older than Alice.

Do you believe the thimble holds some sort of meaning? Why is Alice carrying a thimble?
I don't think it holds some sort of meaning, but I could be wrong. I think Alice was carrying it because it's possible that is part of her lessons. She could be learning to sew.

Interestingly enough, the mouse tells a tale of William the Conqueror, and in the previous chapter Alice thought the mouse 'came over' with him. How did Alice know this information?
Hm....not sure. From her lessons maybe.

Why do think all the animals dislike cats?
Because Alice keeps talking about how her cat catches and eats mice and birds. I wouldn't like cats either if I was a bird or mouse.
Alternately, it could have something to do with the Cheshire Cat....

What other things did you find curious in this chapter? What were your favorite quotes?
I liked the bit about the Mouse's tail/tale and how the poem was written in the shape of a tail.

Who were your favorite characters mentioned?
Probably the Mouse

Good points.  I'd have to agree.
