Chapter 9 - The Mock Turtle's Story by Caro
The Duchess and Alice reunited again and Alice thought that she was in a much pleasanter temper. She didn’t like being so close to the Duchess; one she was very ugly and secondly she was exactly the right height to rest her sharp chin in Alice’s shoulder. They went on talking about the game and every time the Duchess had a moral for everything.
To Alice’s great surprise the Duchess voice died away. When Alice noticed the Queen the queen was in front of them frowning and warned the Duchess, “Either you or your head must be off, and that in about half no time! Take your choice!”. The Duchess chose, and was gone in a moment. After a while playing and several ‘Off with their heads’, the Queen asked Alice if she had seen the Mock Turtle yet; Alice said no and in fact she had no idea what it was. The Queen took Alice to where the Gryphon was and ordered it to take her to hear the Mock Turtle’s story. Once there she saw the Mock Turtle who looked at them with large eyes full of tears and greeted them saying “I was a real turtle”. He told them that had gone to school in the sea, went every day, had taken the different branches of Arithmetic and more. After one of Alice’s remarks the Gryphon interrupted and told the Mock Turtle to tell her about the games.

Alice: “What is the fun?”
Gryphon:”Why, SHE, It's all her fancy, that: they never executes nobody, you know. Come on!”
Mock Turtle: “We had the best of educations in fact; we went to school every day--”
Mock Turtle: “Now at OURS they had at the end of the bill, "French, music, AND WASHING--extra.”
Mock Turtle: “Reeling and Writhing, of course, to begin with, and then the different branches of Arithmetic-- Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision.”
Alice:” And how many hours a day did you do lessons?”
Mock Turtle: “Ten hours the first day, nine the next, and so on.”
Alice: “What a curious plan!”
Gryphon: “That's the reason they're called lessons, because they lessen from day to day”
