Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margie Stohl 9.11 Collision Written by Krystal
By the time Ethan arrived to the car he was soaking wet as the storm had finally reached its peak. As lightning struck and the radio went to static, Ethan heard Sixteen Moon playing softly. As he drove on the storm got worse until the Beater began to fishtail and he slammed on the brakes. The car barreled out of control and as it spun the headlight illuminated someone on the road. He pulled the wheel as hard as he could and waited for the impact that never came.
The car had come to a halt just in front of Lena Duchannes. Ethan got out of the car and as he approached he smelt it, wet lemons and rosemary, her smell. The dream flooded his mind and as the girl slipped through his finger, he saw her face, Lena’s face. He grabbed her wrist and looked at the tiny moon-shaped scratches he remembered in his dream and as they touched electricity ran through his body. It was definitely her.
Lena yelled at him and started to walk away. This wasn’t the way he had planned it to go when he met the girl of his dreams and he ran after her. She approached her uncle’s dead hearse and Ethan mentioned the dream and the song, but she ignored it and started the long walk home. He offered to drive her home and after a few refusals she finally agreed.
Back at the Beater, now drenched due to a left open door, Ethan put the car into drive as he tried not to stare at Lena. He turned his head back to the road as she undid her vest and he turned up the heat. As he drove in silence, Ethan tried to think of something from the dream that would prove who she was, who he was. The harder he tried the more it faded away and as he approached the fork that lead to her house he started to go left. She corrected him. He had been so busy thinking about who she was that he’d forgotten she was Ravenwood’s niece and they were headed straight for his haunted mansion. As they drove on, Ethan noticed her uneasiness and asked why she had moved to Gatlin, after all no one moved there. When she didn’t give a straight answer he asked about her parents, who were dead. He apologizes and expressed his mother’s own accident before shutting up.
As they got to the gate of Ravenwood Manor, Ethan exited the car to walk her to the door, but she stopped him. Macon was apparently shy; now that was an understatement. They sat with both doors halfway open, getting drenched, before she thanked him for not running her over and the ride. When he made a smart-ass remark in return, Lena threw the sleeping bag at him and exited the car. He breathed in the faint smell of her before rolling down his window and screaming after her about Mrs. English. She made a simply reply before heading up into the house and he began to drive off. As he turned right on the fork to get home, Ethan notices a small silvery button and pocketed it. What would he dream of tonight?

Memorable Quotes
Ethan: I couldn’t breathe. I knew she had green eyes; I’d seen them before. But tonight they looked different – different from any eyes I had ever seen. (Page 43)
Ethan: Lena’s hair whipped in the wind around her, dripping with rain. I took a step toward her, and it hit me. Wet lemons. Wet Rosemary. All at once, the dream started coming back to me, like waves crashing over my head. Only this time, when she slipped through my fingers – I could see her face. (Page 43)
Ethan: “I’ll drive like my grandma. I’ll drive like your grandma.” Lena: “You wouldn’t say that if you knew my gramma.” (Page 45)
Lena: She spoke first. “Thanks, I guess.” Ethan: “For not running you down?” Lena: She smiled. “Yeah, that. And the ride.” (Page 49-50)
Questions for consideration:
What did you find interesting about this chapter? How does it help progress the story?
If Ethan dream’s about Lena, then it’s possible she dreams about him. If that is the case, why does she not recognize him? Do you think she is hiding something?
Why do you think Lena looked different during the storm, was it because she was all wet or is there possibly something more to it? Why didn’t he run into her?
Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you’d like to discuss with the book club?
