Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margie Stohl 9.14 The Real Boo Radley Written by Krystal
It was Sunday night and Ethan was rereading The Catcher in the Rye, but unable to do so. His mind was cluttered with the locket, fire, and voices. He called out to Lena and she answered him. They discussed what’s going on and who they could talk to before wishing each other goodnight. One thing was for sure, Ethan needed to focus on other things if she could jump into his head whenever.
Ethan was drowning and Lena was calling out to him; it was her birthday and whatever that meant was happening. He awoke to find himself covered in water and Amma calling his name. He headed down for breakfast where Amma gave him some spiteful words; she was still mad at him, that was obvious. He apologizes and she warns him once again to stay away from Lena before he heads off for school.
When Link pulled up and Ethan slunk into the passenger’s seat he knew something was up. You see, in Gatlin everything had happened ages ago and things never changed. To Ethan it felt like that was going to change now though, something his mother would have approved and Mrs. Lincoln probably wouldn’t condone.
Ethan realized that he had gone into a daze and Lincoln was still talking about how his mom had been talking all about Lena for the last few nights. Turns out all the women have been calling Lena crazy and saying she broke the window in English class and now Mrs. Lincoln was coming to the school today. Link warns Ethan to be careful and by the time they arrive at school he was more than a little annoyed. Link points of his mother and Mrs. Asher talking to Principal Harper and tells Ethan to warn Lena, crazy or not.
Lena was waiting in her car when Ethan startled her. They sat together on the hood and discussed how crazy everyone thought Lena was and their dream. When he inquires about her birthday she changes the subject and asks about the locket. He tells her about his ancestor Ethan Carter Wate, but the sisters didn’t know who GKD was. Lena decides to skip school and Ethan suggests she talk to Macon about the locket.
As Lena drove away the Ravenwood dog barked and he turned to see Mrs. Lincoln. She had managed to convince the Principal to offer Lena a transfer to any school, as long as it wasn’t Jackson. She utters a few words about “being one of us” before she gets in her van and leaves, leaving Ethan even more pissed.
The rest of the day went on as abnormally normal, as in normal on the surface, but Ethan knew deep down what everyone wasn’t talking about. When he arrived home Amma was standing on the porch, a sign of trouble. Ethan says she wasn’t at school and then lies and says Link and him are heading to the library after dinner for a history project.
Link dropped Ethan off at the Ravenwood gate and he had an excuse all ready for her. As he walked up to the porch he heard music coming from inside and barking. Lena swung open the door within seconds and she wasn’t happy to see him. As she ushered him down the steps a clearing of throat informed them that Macon was standing in the doorway. Macon greeted Ethan like the Southern gentleman everyone thought he wasn’t and invites Ethan inside. Ethan declines, but Macon doesn’t take no for an answer and ushers him inside.
Ethan stopped dead in his track as the house he now stood in was not the same as the one he had been in only days ago. They made their way to the dining room where Macon discussed his hatred of townspeople. Macon mentions that Lena’s cousins will be appearing for the Gathering Days and they House and Kitchen should prepare for five. When Macon heads off to the kitchen Ethan checks out the rest of the house.
As he examines a box from the library in the next room, Macon enters and states that he knew Lila and adds through her work as an afterthought. Macon informs that dinner seems to have been served and they return to the grand ballroom. Ethan began to ponder how strange this all was; the fact he hadn’t seen anyone but Lena and Macon and now there was a whole new house.
After eating for a while Ethan decided it was time to ask about the locket. He pulled it out and all the lights went out and the music died. He shoved the locket back in his pocket, at Macon’s request, and decided it was time to leave. As he got up Macon stopped him mid-step and asked Ethan to describe it. It was Lena who spoke up and told him they found it at Greenbrier. This information began a storm that Ethan hadn’t expected and after it was over he was once again afraid of Macon and Ravenwood Manor. As Lena escorted Ethan to the door he saw the large oil painting of the woman with gold eyes, but now she was wearing the locket. Lena turned and froze. She had walked by that painting many times over her life and the locket was never there.

Macon: “Five months. Do you know what lengths I will go to, to keep her safe for five months? What it will cost me? How it will drain me, perhaps, destroy me?” (Page 131)
Questions for consideration:
What do you think of Macon and Ravenwood Manor?
What is it about Lena’s birthday in five months that has everyone on edge?
What do you think the relationship between the locket, Greenbrier, Ravenwood and Ethan is?
