Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margie Stohl 9.24 The Last Three Rows Written by Dawn Edited by Krystal
Ethan contemplates his feelings for Lena and hers feelings for him. He couldn’t really ask Savannah to find out and it wasn’t the kind of things guys talk about.
One day at Greenbrier Ethan asks Lena out on a date Friday and a discussion about his mother occurs. Lena mentions that she the raven on her necklace belonged to her mother and in the Caster world they are extremely powerful. He asks about the rest of the charms and she says that although it looks like a bunch of junk, everything means something to her, and then agrees to Friday night at the movies.
The more he thought about Friday the more nervous he got. It wasn’t a date, but he wanted it to be, and he wondered what you do when you realize you might have feelings for a girl. He spent most of his time thinking about Lena these days and everything that was boring before was brighter now.
By Friday night Ethan was in a great mood which meant he was doing horrible in school. Link gave him a ride to Summerville and dropped him at the Cineplex where Lena was waiting. Turns out the guys from school were planning a night out too and with only one screen that meant he’d have to be with Lena in plain view.
Ethan’s mood evaporated as Emory’s voice boomed over the crowd at him, noticing Ethan and Lena. Lena ignored them and walked inside as Ethan followed, apologetically. They order some concessions and head into the film where Lena chooses the last row. Unlike most Gatlin kids, Lena didn’t know that the last three rows of the Cineplex, the water tower, and in summer the lake were hook up spots. When the movie started and couples began to kiss and Lena was horrified, but he promised to behave.
Ten minutes in Ethan already knew the ending. When Lena went into his pocket for the Milk Duds she found Genevieve’s locket and asks why he still had it. The couple in front of them came up for air and startled Lena, making her drop the locket. When they both grabbed for it another vision sucked them in.
Genevieve didn’t want to think it was too late for her family and ran for the house as Ethan and Ivy urged her to come back. When the bushes opened up two Federal soldiers, bagging the valuables, saw and grabbed her. She screamed as the dragged her down the house steps and blood was dripping down her collar when a gunshot rang out. The hand holding her relaxed and then two more shots fired. Ethan had shot at the two men and although he had killed the first, the second shot him in return. Genevieve’s eyes refocused in horror.
The credits were rolling and the lights were coming up. Lena leaned against Ethan in sadness ; they had just watched a man die.

Memorable Quotes
Ethan: You know that expression, “It hit me like a ton of bricks”? It’s true. The minute she turned the car around and ended up on my doorstep in her purple pajamas, that’s how I felt about Lena. (Page 143)
Ethan: “That’s cute.” Lena: “If by cute you mean tragic.” Ethan: “I mean, that you kept it.” (Page 146-147)
Lena: Why didn’t you say something? Ethan: I didn’t know. Lena: Liar. Ethan: I’ll be a perfect gentleman. Honest. (Page 152)
Questions for consideration:
Do you think Lena returns Ethan’s affections? Why or why not?
What do you think happened to Ethan Carter Wate and why do you think they are seeing these visions?
