Chapter 26: Fireworks
Characters involved: Clay Elena Summary: Clay and Elena walked to the ravine and found a thicket for their run. They separated long enough to change, but she was taking too long thinking about how good it felt changing in Toronto with someone instead of sneaking around solo. Clay peaked over whining for her to hurry up before she had actually changed.
After they ran, they changed back to human form and laid in the grass together resting and talking. Then, Clay told her that he had something for her. It was two sparklers; he remembered her love for them. He told her that they should start a new tradition of wishing on them as they were tossed aside, when they were done. She wished that she knew what she wanted.
Quotes: “Throw it and make a wish”-Clay “That’s birthday candles…Only you blow them out, you don’t throw them”-Elena “You threw them once. Cake and all”-Clay “I threw them at you. And the only wish I made can’t be repeated”-Elena
Chapter 27: Possibilities
Characters involved: Clay Elena Philip Summary: Elena and Clay slept in the forest until Dawn and then got dressed and had breakfast at a little bistro. Clay commented that Elena looked happy and she told him that she was.
They got back to the apartment after 9 am, laughing as they tumbled into the door. Philip was sitting waiting for them. Philip insisted on talking to Elena alone. Clay tried walking to other parts of the apartment, but Philip wouldn’t have it. Elena told Clay it was OK and Clay said he’d be downstairs and left.
Elena asked when Philip got back and he informed her that he never left that he lied, there wasn’t a meeting. He was hoping to find out what was going on between Elena and Clay. He said that he couldn’t figure out what was going on but that Clay loves her. Philip told her that Clay had to leave today. He then showed her some print outs of houses for sale and told her that he hadn’t gone golfing on Sunday that he had been looking at houses for them and he wants to marry her. He told her to give him time to get a ring and do it right though.
She left the apartment in a daze, not sure what to make of Philip’s proposal. Clay wasn’t downstairs when she left, but she figured he’d know that she went to work and would catch up.
Later, Clay calls her and he can tell that something is wrong. He deduces that it had something to do with the print outs of the houses, as he had seen them while at the apartment. He asks her to go to lunch with him; she can choose where, but that they need to talk and he promises no tricks. He will be there in 10-15 minutes.
Elena goes downstairs to wait for Clay and gets nauseous and falls. A middle-aged couple catches her and helps her to a bench. Clay never shows and she knows something is wrong, her anxiety gets worse and she decides that she must go back to the apartment.
Quotes: “You look happy”-Clay “Something’s going on, it’s just not the obvious….You know he’s in love with you, don’t you?”-Philip
Chapter 28: Discovery
Characters involved: Elena Philip Jeremy Summary: As Elena opened the apartment door, something was blocking it. It was Philip’s unconscious body. He was bleeding from his mouth and his side, where he had been cut. At first she wondered if Clay did this, but realized Clay could never do something this bad. Also, Philip was still alive and if Clay had done it, he wouldn’t be.
Elena called for an ambulance and tore up some sheets to staunch Philip’s wound and bound his side. She could smell LeBlanc on him. Then, she found a hypodermic needle on the floor. The plunger side smelled like Daniel, but the needle side smelled like Clay. She found Clay’s wedding band on the table with a note from Daniel telling Elena to meet him at the Big Bear Motor Lodge at 10am tomorrow. Now she knows why she was nauseous and passing out waiting for Clay, their psychic link that was formed from him biting her, it caused her to pass out when Clay was knocked out. Philip wakes up enough to tell Elena that two men came looking for her and that Clay fought them. The fear Elena was feeling for Clay forced her to change into a wolf right in front of Philip, who appeared revolted by it.
Then, Elena jumped through the balcony doors. She needed clothes and money to be able to catch a plane back to New York back that would require her to calm down enough to change back. So, she started running to Toronto instead.
It was nearly midnight when she heard Jeremy roaring through her head asking where she was and telling her that he couldn’t contact Clay. She thought that he could only contact her in her sleep and then she wasn’t sure if she even was awake anymore. She tried to answer Jeremy, but couldn’t, but sent pictures of where she was instead. She eventually blacked out and then she could see Clay running with her. Then, she fell and it was completely black.
Quotes: “Where are you, Elena? I can’t contact Clay! Where the hell are you?”-Jeremy
Chapter 29: Caged
Characters involved: Elena Clay Jeremy Summary: Elena woke up shivering in the wet grass. Then, she felt something warm and soft fall around her shoulders, Jeremy’s jacket. She then felt herself being picked up and carried. Jeremy looked over her worriedly, she tried to talk to him, but the words wouldn’t come out. Jeremy deduced that the mutts had Clay though as Elena tried to tell him that she had to be there by 10am.
The next time she woke up, Elena was in the backseat of the car with Nick. She asked what time it was and Nick told her it was 11:20, she’s too late. Elena threw off the jacket and seat belt and yelled for them to stop the car. Jeremy told them to keep going that she’s delirious. She opened the door and tried to jump out, but was grabbed and pulled back in by Nick and Jeremy. Jeremy put his hands around her neck and she passed out again.
Elena woke up in a memory of when she was in the cage after Clay had bitten her and Jeremy was trying to make her accept being a werewolf. She saw memories of Clay sitting outside her cage trying to explain why he bit her and apologized. He begged her to obey Jeremy so that she could get out of the cage and to beg Jeremy to let him back in the house so he can quit sneaking around and help her.
When she awoke from her memory, she found that she was in the cage again. Jeremy was sitting outside it watching over her. He told her he was sorry he had to put her in there, but he was afraid she’d hurt herself. He told her that she talked in her sleep so he knew about Daniel taking Clay. He said he couldn’t let her go to Daniel because they would lose both her and Clay then. Jeremy said he sent Daniel a note letting him know that he would not let Elena make the appointment, but that he’s willing to negotiate as long as Clay is not harmed. Elena feels guilty that she wasn’t looking after Clay the way he was looking after her.
Jeremy left her in the cage overnight, she cried and then flew into a rage breaking the bed and cursing Jeremy at the top of her lungs. Then, she decided throwing tantrums wouldn’t help Clay.
Jeremy came by showing her a Polaroid picture of Clay that Daniel sent to prove he is alive. He looked drugged and beaten, but alive. Jeremy won’t tell him what Daniel wants, but has demanded he send daily pictures while they negotiate. Elena asked to get out of the cage and Jeremy told her to eat her lunch and he’d check back to see if she’s still hungry.
Quotes: “Calm down and think about it, you’ll know Clay isn’t dead. Think about it. Daniel knows how important Clayton is to the pack. To you. To me. He’s too valuable as a hostage.”-Jeremy
Chapter 30: Plans
Characters involved: Jeremy Elena Nick Summary: Jeremy let Elena out of the cage later that afternoon. She asked about his plans, but he made her wait until dinner and then he took her into the study to talk. He wouldn’t let he know the plan in an effort to keep her safe. He told her that Clay getting captured wasn’t her fault, but his for sending them to Toronto and not realizing Daniel had left town until it was too late.
Elena decided to create her own plan, using Nick as her ally since he wasn’t allowed to know about Jeremy’s plan either. Nick agreed to help, but wouldn’t disobey Jeremy’s orders.
Elena called to check on Philip, but didn’t talk to him and then started trying to figure out where Daniel was holding Clay. She was checking real estate sales and rentals, but coming up empty-handed. Everyone thinks she is upset because she’s realized she loves Clay, but she still just feels responsible for him getting taken.
Quotes: “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I really am. But this is how it has to be.”-Jeremy
Chapter 31: Awakening
Characters involved: Elena Clay Nick Daniel Martsen Summary: Jeremy and Antonio took off again the next morning and Elena went back to trying to figure out how to help Clay. She started investigating the mutt Cain had been training, Victor Olson. He was a child molester, who was finally convicted when he murdered one of his victims.
Then Elena did the laundry that hadn’t been done since they left for Toronto. She found a pile of presents for her in Clay’s closet when she went to put up his clothes. It brought back all the memories of the sweet things he did, especially him giving her Christmas that first year. He looked up all the traditions and did them all with her. When he was banned from the house the first year she had accepted being a werewolf and was out of the cage he called Jeremy and made sure they gave her the Christmas he would have. It was Clay’s gift to her. Hers to him was convincing Jeremy to let Clay return. Ever since then they always celebrate Christmas at Stonehaven. Last year was the first year Elena hadn’t returned for Christmas. Clay kept holding out hope she would come and she hadn’t, choosing to stay with Philip instead.
Elena had Nick slip a note into Jeremy’s note to Daniel. Nick didn’t know what it said, but it was a note telling Daniel to meet Elena at the Donut Hole. Nick went with her to the meeting even though he didn’t want to.
Martsen was there with Daniel. Martsen kept Nick company while Elena talked to Daniel. Daniel told her that he didn’t want revenge, but he wants full-blooded werewolf children and she’s the only one he can have that with. He wants to take her and cage her until she can see he’s the better choice and if she goes with him, he will release Clay. But she won’t let her be present for Clay’s release. She slammed Daniel against her car so hard one of the windows shattered as she thought of all the torture he’s putting Clay through.
Quotes: “So this is all about winning me….” Elena “You don’t think you’re worth it? I thought your self-esteem was higher than that.”-Daniel “Have you ever thought of starting your own pack? Not recruiting a bunch of half-wit mutts, but creating a dynasty? We aren’t immortal, Elena, but there is a way to ensure our immortality”-Daniel “You sniveling hyena…You kidnap him with a hypodermic needle. You chain him up so you can beat him. But that’s not good enough. You have to drug him first. You have to make absolutely certain he can’t even summon the strength to spit in your face. Then you beat him. Did it feel good? Did it make you feel like a man, beating your enemy to a pulp when he can’t lift a finger to fight back? You’re not a man and you’re not a wolf. You’re a hyena, a bottom-feeding coward.”-Elena “The bitch is back”-Martsen
Chapter 32: Regression
Characters involved: Elena Victor Olson Summary: Elena left Stonehaven after everyone had gone to bed and rolled her car down the driveway. She went searching for Olson, thinking he is probably still spying on young kids. When she was about to give up, she saw him. She followed behind him in her car as he drove up a drive, but it wasn’t to where they were keeping Clay though. It led to nothing and when she approached the car she realized he was sleeping. Elena jammed Olson’s seat belt and tightened it around him. She slashed both his wrists using her werewolf claws (only changing her hand). She told him if he wanted to live to tell her everything, and he did. But she didn’t remove the seat belt as she had promised, deciding he deserved to die for all he had done to those young girls.
Chapter 33: Confrontation
Characters involved: Elena Martsen Daniel LeBlanc Clay Summary: Elena stopped at the gas station and called Stonehaven until Nick finally answered and she gave him directions to where Olson said they were hiding Clay. She forced Nick to write it down and read it back to her.
Then she went knocking on the door of the mutts’ hideout. Martsen answers the door. He tries to convince her to turn back telling her she’d leave in chains or a body bag, neither of which would suit her. He told her he would let her leave in exchange for territory and that he would leave as well. But Daniel heard them talking and came to investigate. Daniel and Martsen figured out that Olson was gone and that’s how Elena found them. Martsen went on complaining to Daniel about how stupid it was to turn all these human killers into werewolves and what a dumb plan it was.
Daniel sends LeBlanc to look for the pack after Martsen tells him that the pack wouldn’t send her alone. LeBlanc tells them the cops are detaining them and taking the explorer apart bolt by bolt.
Martsen is holding Elena and they instruct LeBlanc to go get Clayton, they want to move before the pack arrives. Clay looks even worse and Elena offers herself if they will release Clay. Clay objects and so does LeBlanc. LeBlanc pulls out his knife and slits Daniel’s throat.
Martsen tries to make a deal with LeBlanc, he will take Clay because he is a bigger bargaining chip for territory and LeBlanc can have Elena. Martsen and Elena struggle and she blacks out. He sees her open her eyes again, but tells LeBlanc that she’s unconscious. Then, Martsen heads over to Clay and starts untying him, which LaBlanc protests. Martsen and LeBlanc fight. Elena sneaks over to Clay, who pleads for her to leave without him. Elena changes into wolf form and LeBlanc bolts. She wants to chase him, but is afraid to leave Clay with Martsen. Clay tells her not to waste time with him and Martsen says one word, territory that lets her know he won’t hurt Clay. Elena bolts after LeBlanc and stalks him, he makes it too easy not using his nose and not even changing. She howls just to get him to run. She chases him and eventually rips out his throat.
Quotes: “You know me better than that. I see an opportunity, I take advantage of it.”-Martsen
Chapter 34: Ready
Characters involved: Clay Elena Jeremy Martsen Philip Summary: The rest of the pack did eventually show up, but wasn’t happy she acted on her own. Jeremy gave Martsen Wyoming, he bargained for better territory, but ended up settling for what was offered.
Clay took a long time to heal, and Elena spent most of the time by his bedside. She needed to go back to Toronto and talk to Philip, but she knew she belonged at Stonehaven and everyone had been right about her loving Clay. She realized what she had seen in Philip, he reminded her of Jeremy, but it was more of a father figure and could never give her the excitement of a lover, but Clay could.
Elena made the trip to Toronto, she didn’t call ahead, afraid she’d back out if she heard Philip’s voice. Philip claims he didn’t see anything that day, she knows he saw the change, but decided not to push it. Philip had both of their things packed, as he has sublet the apartment. She takes a couple bags and tells him he can donate or throw away the rest. But she does take Clay’s wedding band.
She left the apartment and once outside, Clay walks up to her, dragging his leg. He told her that he couldn’t let her leave without him telling her that he loves her and needs her. He told her that this past year that she’s been gone has been hell and that he had made up his mind when she came back that he would do whatever it took to win her back and with no games or tricks. He said he’s really trying although it may not seem like it, but he’ll keep trying.
She asked him why he went back up to the apartment after he called her that day when he saw LeBlanc and Daniel go upstairs since he knew she wasn’t there. He told her he went back because he knew she would have wanted him to and that if anything happened to Philip, she’d be hurt. Elena thanked and kissed him.
Clay then asked if she would stay and she told him she was already planning to and if he had read the note she left, he’d have known that.
Quotes: “A day or two?...I was thinking of a bit longer. Not forever, of course. Just eight, maybe nine decades.”-Clay
