Melissa Marr
Wicked Lovely Series - 2: Ink Exchange

Summary
Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance between the Faerie Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly-vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow.

17-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life.

The tattoo does bring changes—not the kind that Leslie had dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faerie world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils.

Review
After reading "Wicked Lovely" by Melissa Marr, I had high hopes for this novel. I have to say, I was BLOWN AWAY. This tale of an ordinary girl thrust into a world of extraordinary circumstances is definitely one of a kind.

After getting the tattoo that she felt would change her life, Leslie became bound to Irial, the King of the Dark faeries. This relationship was formed originally for Leslie to give sustenance to the Dark King so in turn he could feed his dark faeries, but the relationship and outlook of both were changed. Leslie actually became "addicted" to Irial, and vice versa. These characters were irrevocably changed. It was interesting to read that Leslie was trying so hard to get away from her life that was changed by drugs (ie. Ren, her drug dealing brother) and she ended up becoming addicted to a different type of drug. And Irial started the Ink Exchange with not a care for Leslie but ended up caring for her more than he had ever cared for anything in his lifetime.

The downward spiral of both these characters was intriguing to read. The depth of emotion and tolerance that Marr gave these characters was phenomenal. Getting into the mind of a drug addict, no matter what drug it is, is dark and disturbing, but very real. I give two very big thumbs up for this masterpiece and I only have great hope for Marr in the future with her novels.

At first, I was disappointed that the book isn't about Aislinn and Seth. I got so attached to them in the first book.

BUT I quickly became emotionally attached to Leslie. She had overcome a lot in her life already.
Leslie is a wounded but strong character and Melissa Marr explores that.

I was right there with her as she struggled to gain freedom from her past and ended up in another bad situation with Irial.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

At first I was also disappointed that the main characters weren't Aislinn and Seth, but after reading the book I find myself prefering the characters of Ink Exchange since they and their relationships were more intersting and more perplexed. I plan to read the next book as soon as possible!

I'm actually re-reading this now...

I just read the part where Iri is awake after Leslie gets her tat...and after that everyone finds out about Ani special talents...didn't think much of it at the time, but look what Radiant Shadows is about!  Huh

I find this whole series to be a little half-baked to be honest. Many of Marr's characters are partially or all Mary-Sues and substantially speaking, leave something to be desired.

The first book was actually good and I read it all without stopping because I initially found it interesting, however I soon realized as I read the sequels that if you have read one, you've read them all.

The plot is pretty much the same throughout all of them: girl meets boy- boy is too dangerous with whom to hang around- girl hangs around boy anyway- girl ends up facing  emotional and physical conflicts (that sometimes don't really make sense)- story is quickly ended in a very anti-climactic way.

I must say Marr is good at describing and presenting the characters she writes, but she needs to actually make up some characters that are more different from each other. I also find that the characters are very stereotypical given the genre in which she writes.

I think Melissa Marr is on her way to becoming a well-developed author, but I think she needs more experience and needs to branch out and maybe write something other than lust-driven macabre. A well-rounded author is a better author for it :)

But what do I know right? I'm just a reader  rollseyes

I liked the first two, but I agree with you on the 3rd. I only read a few chapters and I gave up.
IMO the first one was her best. And if she wants to keep readers' interest, she does need to grow as an author.

Yeah. I agree with you guys.

I miss Aislinn and Seth, and I'm still waiting for the 5th book for some possibility of reading more about them. I still can't believe Niall is a homo.. and Irial, too!  wtf To think that they're in love with the same girl.  BitchSlap myself XD
