Chapter 20-Daybreak & Epilogue-Two Great Lights by Erin

Summary

As the sun rises, Luce and Daniel walk towards the cemetery holding hands. Before leaving the building, the angels had pulled back their wings. Even though there was no trace of the wings, Luce could still see the silver light from inside of them. They laid Penn’s body on the altar, and Daniel promised to bury her after the school settled down. Luce hated leaving Penn, but told her she was with her father now, and safe and happy. Students were roaming around the school—so early that it meant they had heard the battle. She wondered what they would be told. She could see police lights around the cemetery. As they walk, Daniel tells her that it’s going to be tough to see. Cam fights in a very messy way-not gory, just different. Luce thinks that after the night she’s had, nothing will alarm her now. The air looked thick and murky and Luce asks what it was. Daniel tells her its dust; angels don’t die but their battles leave this residue behind. He tells her it will settle eventually, and then people will come to study it. The keep walking and Luce shows Daniel were Penn’s father is buried. Luce begins to cry, because she couldn’t save Penn and won’t be there to give her a proper memorial. Daniel promises to take care of Penn. Luce tells Daniel she doesn’t think she can leave, but Daniel tells her she can, and she has to. He tells her she’s stronger and more amazing than she knows. They walk to the trees, and after they can’t be seen from the cemetery, Daniel tells Luce to close her eyes. Daniel wraps his arms around her waist and lifts her off the ground. She can tell they’re flying over the trees, but she knows not to open her eyes. They land under the magnolia tree by the lake. He tells her he brought her here because it was one of the many places he’d wanted to kiss her recently. They kiss, although it’s too brief for Luce. Daniel tells her that there is a path nearby that leads to a path to get to a safe place. She can see that at the end of the path is a clearing, with an airplane in the center. She asks where she’s going, and what her parents will be told. Daniel tells her that Mr. Cole will call her parents, that they can trust him. She thinks that she trusted Miss Sophia too. Daniel tells her they have to go, but they can walk or swim. Holding hands, they dive into the water. After they reach the other side, Daniel tells her this is their last chance to be alone and he wants to say their real goodbye here. He gives her the medallion he normally wears. Once he hands it to her, she realizes it’s a locket with a rose engraved on the front. He tells her it belonged to her a long time ago. Inside is a picture of the two of them, smiling at each other. She asks where (and when) it was taken and Daniel tells her he will tell them the next time he sees her. Daniel says he know Cam gave her a necklace too, and she tells him she didn’t want it but Cam had forced it on her. Daniel says he knows, that he held onto a lot of his angelic charm when he fell. She says she hopes she never sees Cam again, but Daniel tells her she probably will, and that there are a lot more like him out there, but to trust her gut. He tells her she still has the memories of past lives, even if she can’t remember yet, so to trust her instinct. Daniel tells her he’s going to find Cam, because they have things they need to take care of. Luce begs him to promise to come back, and he tells her he can’t live without her. They continue toward the plane, where Mr. Cole is waiting with a towel. Gabbe and Arriane are there as well, to say goodbye. They give her a thermos of hot chocolate. Gabbe promises to see her soon, and Arriane tells her not to do anything stupid, because they need her. Luce asks why, and Arriane only smiles. Mr. Cole tells Luce they have to leave soon, and Daniel hugs her and tells her he loves her. Luce climbs into the plane, and sees only Mr. Cole in the cockpit. He tells her he was a pilot in Vietnam. They take off, and she asks where they’re going. He tells her an island just off the coast. She asks about her parents, and he answers that they’ll figure out something.

On the island that night, Daniel watches as Luce sleeps. She says his name a few times as she sleeps, and as much as he wants to go to her, he stays put. There is a tap on the glass behind him, and a person is outside. Cam comes in, and the two sit, wings nearly touching (Cam’s are gold, Daniel’s silver). Cam says she’s lovely when she sleeps, and Daniel asks if that’s why he wants her dead. Cam insists that he doesn’t, that he would have killed Sophia for what she tried to do. Cam simply wants her. Daniel tells Cam he pities him and that he’ll be disappointed. Cam responds that Daniel doesn’t have her yet, that she still knows so little. Cam says the truce lasts eighteen days, but they’ll probably need each other before then. They both know that they worst is yet to come. They shake hands, as Luce sleeps on dreaming of two angels in the rafters.

Memorable Quotes

“Daniel swept her up and pressed his forehead to hers. As their lips connected, Luce tried to hold on to every part of this moment. She would need this memory the way she needed air.”

“Fight to stay alive long enough to live out her life next to him. Fight for the only thing she knew was good enough, noble enough, powerful enough to be worth risking everything. Love.”

Questions

Why do Daniel and Cam need each other if they are on opposite sides?

Why does Cam want Luce?

I'm not sure about either of these questions. I think the answers will be in the next book.
