Captain America: The First Avenger Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action
Review: Steve Rogers is lanky, short, and is more suited to sit behind a desk than participate in a war. Yet, Steve is determined to join his fellow brethren in fighting in World War II against Hitler’s onslaught of hatred. But due to Steve’s various aliments, preferably his asthma, he is not allowed entry into the armed forces. A scientist named Dr. Abraham Erskine sees potential in Steve and decides to give him the go ahead to join the military. Steve proves he has no real ability in training but Dr. Erskine sees something special in Steve. Steve has integrity, is honorable, and has no desire for power; he simply wishes to be a good man and do the right thing. Dr. Erskine chooses Steve for his “super soldier” experiment and through that Steve is transformed into Captain America. Captain America’s mission to stop Johann Schmidt who leads HYDRA, a private terrorist group formed by Hitler, and has come into possession of a mysterious power source that he claims will give him the power of the gods. Johann is determined to conquer the world and take over as the new global leader. His only problem: Captain America is proving to be more of a nuisance than he expected.
The cast was top notch in this movie. I have always been a big fan of Chris Evans. Aside from the fact that the man is just so drop dead gorgeous and has smile that sends women swooning, he brings heart to his role as Captain America as well as strength and humor. He portrays Steve Rogers flawlessly. Tommy Lee Jones doesn’t have many scenes but when he’s on screen he is absolutely funny! Hugo Weaving as the completely maniacal Johann Schmidt manages to terrify and grip the audience in laughter at the same time. Hayley Atwell plays Peggy Carter and she was able to go toe to toe with Chris Evans and Tommy Lee Jones perfectly. She deserves a great deal of credit and praise for her portrayal. Most of the time, especially in super-hero type movies, the love interest is usually useless and pointless to the plot. In Captain America, Atwell’s character Peggy Carter is strong, bold, sassy, and smart. She heads off to the battlefield along with Captain America and the team. She knows how to throw a punch and shoot a gun. The woman was fantastic!
The effects were right on point. The movie is filled with tons of action as well as heart warming moments. There are tremendous explosions and great hand to hand combat scenes. One of my favorite scenes was when Atwell shoots a few bullets at Steve. One of the best action scenes was between Captain America and Red Skull or a.k.a Johann Schmidt on the plane.
There are a few moments where the movie drags a bit. When Steve Rogers gets sucked into having to tour America performing on stage in a musical was a bit out of place and went on longer than was necessary; but was still funny.
Captain America: The First Avenger is one of the best films to come out this summer. The heroes are well rounded and wonderfully portrayed. The special effects are impressive and not overly done. The action is explosive and exhilarating. This is a movie worth paying to see in theaters.
Note: Make sure to stay AFTER the credits! A scene is shown from the new movie The Avengers coming out May 2012. And even better, the first trailer for the movie is also shown!!
Running Time: 125 minutes (2 hrs. 5 mins.) Director: Joe Johnston My Rating: 10/10 stars!
