Season 1, Episodes 1-4

Space Pilot 3000

New Year’s Eve, 1999: Pizza Delivery boy, Phillip J. Fry (age 25) is out on a delivery as it nears midnight. When he reaches Applied Cryogenics he realizes the delivery was prank call (for I.C. Wiener). He sits down to enjoy the beer and pizza as the countdown begins, and leans back in the chair and falls into a freezer tube. The timer reads 1000 years, and we see the years pass by (and the city rise and fall) until finally it’s December 31st, 2999. The tube opens and he’s greeted by a purpled haired, female Cyclops named Leela. It’s her job to assign him a job, and after various tests (one that tells him he has a great, great, etc, etc grand nephew), she tells him the job he’ll be best at is a delivery boy. When she tries to install his career chip (in his hand, with a very sharp instrument) he panics and runs. Leela goes after him.

While trying to find a phone booth to call his nephew, Professor Farnsworth, he meets a robot named Bender. The both get into the phone booth, which turns out to be a suicide booth, and are nearly killed by various objects (the choices were quick and painless or slow and horrible. Fry, who tried to make a collect call, was given slow and horrible). Bender tells him he was going t suicide because he was great at bending girders until he found out what they were for: suicide booths. Since Bender didn’t have anything else planned, the go out drinking. Leela catches up to them in the bar, and chases them into the head museum. Fry is thrilled to meet Leonard Nimoy (and less thrilled to meet Richard Nixon) and he and Bender loose Leela and hide out in the sewers. While hiding, they discover the decaying ruins of old New York. Fry realizes how alone he is in the world, just as Leela shows up. Fry gives up and puts out his hand, but Leela then pulls out her own career chip. Fry tells her how miserable and alone he feels, and Leela tells Fry she understands: she’s the only one eyed alien on the planet, her parents abandoned her as a child and she doesn’t know where they were form. As the three of them are now job deserters, the visit Fry’s nephew to mooch off of him. The police catch up to them there, but they are able to escape in the Professor’s space ship, taking off just as the New Year’s fireworks begin. The fireworks make it impossible for the police to shoot them down. The professor offers them jobs as his new delivery crew, and they accept.

The Series has Landed

Fry, Leela, and Bender are the Professor’s new spaceship crew and as their first day begins, they meet Hermes Conrad, the manager of Planet Express (the professor’s delivery company). Leela is designated captain, and while she fills out wavers with Hermes, Amy Wong, the professor’s intern cleans Bender and fry is examined by the company Doctor, Dr. Zoidberg. He’s a lobster on legs, but insists that he’s a human expert. Fit to fly, the crew go back for their assignment: delivering a crate to the moon. Leela, Bender, Fry and Amy board the ship and land at the amusement park Luna Park “The Happiest Place Orbiting Earth”. Amy picks up the crate with the magnetic hoist, but accidentally drops the ships keys into the box without realizing it.

They explore the park since Fry has never been to the moon, but Fry whines that he wants to see the real moon. Leela decides to take him on the lunar rover ride, since the line is short because it’s educational. Menwhile Amy and Bender are in the arcade, and see the crate the delivered. It’s fuilled with stuffed animals for the crane amchine, and Amy sees the keys fall in. She asks Bender to get ehm out, and he reaches up trying to get them, but its caught by security and thrown out of the park-onto the lunar surface.

Meanwhile, Fry and Leela are riding on a track until Fry gets bored and forces the car off. They drive around the craters until Fry gets the car stuck. Almost out of oxygen, the find a farm and ask to borrow some. The farmer tells them they’ll have to work for it, since oxygen doesn’t grow on trees. While their milking some Buggalo they see Bender running across the farm being chased by the farmer; Bender had been fooling around with one of his robot daughters. Leela grabs and oxygen tank and the three make a run for it. They loose the farmer, but bust a wheel on their car, and with the sun setting they have to find shelter. As they outrun the shadow, we see the professor watching them from Earth. He says he should do something but “I am already in my pajamas”. Eventually the find the original moon landing site, which had been lost for centuries. Leela and Fry hide there but accidently lock Bender out. Irritated, he walks off. Fry tells Leela why he wanted to see the moon so badly, until they are interrupted by Bender once again being chased by the farmer. Suddenly the Planet Express ship appears, piloted by Amy. The ship is full of stuffed animals (the only way to get the keys out). She uses the magnetic winch to grab Bender and the lunar lander with Fry and Leela inside, and they head for home.

I, Roommate

Fry has been living at the Planet Express office, and it’s causing problems for everyone who works there. They finally kick him out, and Bender tells Fry he can move in with him. But it turns out Bender’s apartment is only 2 cubic meters, so they decide to look for a bigger place. After checking out a few places with no luck, they overhear the Professor talking on the phone about someone who has just died. Bender and Fry love that apartment, so they take it. Hermes, Dr. Zoidberg, Amy, Leela, and the Professor come over for a house warming party and to watch the robot soap opera All My Circuits. Leela brings Fry a miniature fruit salad tree. Bender goes out for more beer, but as the show starts he comes back in and the tv gets staticy. It turns out his antenna is interfering with the satellite signal. He suggest he and Fry move again, but Fry says maybe it would be better if Bender moved back to his place and Fry stay at the new apartment. Bender goes to his old place, but is so depressed he stops drinking (his fuel cells run on alcohol). He comes into work the next day with a rusty beard and Leela tells him he needs to drink more. He wanders to streets, sober and sad.

Leela goes to Fry and tells him he needs to apologize to Bender, because he’s hurt and sad. Fry had no idea and he says if he knew where he was he’d apologize. Just then Bender walks in, tripping over his own feet and threatens to cut his antenna off. Leela tells him not to mutilate himself, but Fry thinks it’s a great idea. So Bender chops it off. But he looks so sad after that Fry helps him look for it (he threw it out the window) and they get it reattached. The two move back into Bender’s old place. Fry wonders out loud whether or not the fruit salad tree will get enough sun, and Bender tells him there’s a window in the closet. He opens to closet to a huge room with a huge window, and Fry says he’ll just live in there. Bender replies “In a closet? Ah, humans” and shakes his head.

Love’s Labours Lost in Space

Leela has been going on a string of unsuccessful dates and is lonely. The crew takes her out to a bar, but she won’t agree to date anyone there. So when the Professor tells then about a mission to Vergon 6 to save animals, she perks up. The planet was once filled with dark matter (which is used for space ship fuel) but has been mined until it was just an empty shell and it about to collapse. As they approach the planet, the see the ship of legendary Captain Zapp Brannigan. They dock and board, and the captain and his First Officer, Kif, invite them to dinner. While eating, Leela tells Zapp their mission, and he imprisons them because a Democratic Order of Planets law states they are not allowed to interfere with planet without technology (ignoring the fact that it was DOOP that mined the planet hollow). Leela asks to speak to Zapp privately, and he tries to seduce her. When she turns him down, he starts crying, and Leela spends the night with him out of pity. She tries to sneak out the next morning but he wakes up. She tells him she’s going to the planet to save the animals and he can’t stop her, and he says he won’t try; she won’t make it down there before “the craving” sets in (for more Zapp lovin).

Leela, Fry, and Bender land on the planet two hours after it was supposed to collapse and begin collecting animals. When they are almost done, Leela finds an animal that’s not on their list, a small, black two legged creature with three eyes. She decides to keep him and names him Nibbler. They put him in the cargo hold with the rest of the animals and go back outside to find the last species. When they go back, the only animal left is Nibbler. The set the last animal down beside Nibbler, and he eats it in one bite. They don’t have time to collect the animals again, because the ground begins to shake. They get in the ship only to realize they’re almost out of fuel. Leela reluctantly calls Zapp and asks for help. He says he’ll tow her to safety if they put Nibbler back on the surface. Enraged, Leela hangs up. Fry asks what her plan is and she tells him they’ll wait for death. Just then there is a huge bang, and when they look back, Nibbler has just gone to the bathroom-but he’s dropped a pile of dark matter. Bender loads it into the engine and they take off. Leela writes in her journal that she may not have found love, but she found a cuddly creature that exerts starship fuel, and that’s just as good. Then she sees what she wrote and crumples it up and throws it in the trash.
