RECAP & REVIEW
True to form, Lost’s 10th episode follows yet another two Lost characters, to give us some answers and clues. Since we don’t know who is a candidate from the two Kwons, they cleverly focused on both in Sideways World flashbacks.
Last time we saw Jin and Sun together, it was in sideways world and Jin was being detained by airport security for carrying way too much money. The $25,000 he is carrying is confiscated because he didn’t declare it.
We learn Jin and Sun came to the States for a few reasons. Jin is Sun’s bodyguard. But Jin is there to deliver a watch and the confiscated money to Keamy. (The man Sayid shot in the restaurant a few episodes back). We learn Jin and Sun are not married and they are cavorting in secret. Sun and Jin check into the hotel, with separate rooms, but rendezvous in Sun’s room. Keamy comes to the hotel looking for his money. When they cannot produce the funds, Sun agrees to take money out of her secret account to pay him. Keamy takes Jin to the restaurant and ties him up in the freezer and we learn that the money is actually payment for Keamy to kill Jin. A hit that was ordered by Sun’s own father.
At the bank, Sun is told her ‘secret’ account has been closed. She learns her father has closed the account. Keamy’s goon takes her to the restaurant where they find Keamy and his men lying on the floor. Jin, (who escaped the freezer, because Sayid gave him the means via box cutter), ambushes the goon and gunfire ensues. Sun is hit by a flying bullet and is bleeding from her stomach. This is when she drops the bomb to Jin that she is pregnant.
Now we know why Jin was locked in the freezer in the Sayid centric episode.
Back on the island, an interesting question is raised when Claire asks Flocke about the names on the cave wall and asks if Kate’s name is up there. Flocke mentions to Claire that Kate’s name is no longer there. Usually people whose names have been crossed off have died. So what exactly does this mean? Not only that, but the strange and eerie Lost music plays as he answered her, so it definitely means something.
Flocke leaves the camp in search for Sun and leaves Sayid in charge and Jin sees this as an opportunity to leave the camp to find Sun. Before he is able, everyone at the camp is shot with tranquilizer darts, and Jin is taken.
On the submarine, we learn that Jin has be taken due to his work in the Dharma Initiative (back when they got stuck in the 70’s) in relation to some schematic plans pertaining to electromagnetic pockets on the island, that Jin signed. They want answers from him, but he wants to speak to Charles Widmore first.
After meeting, Jin sees his daughter for the first time in the pictures from Sun’s camera, which Widmore has given him. Widmore explains to Jin the importance of Flocke never making it off the island. Jin is told they have a “package” on board that will hopefully prevent this from happening and Jin is taken to see it.
Sun is tending a tomato garden and Jack tries to discuss her purpose on the island, but she wants no part of it or the discussion. Flocke soon appears and promises that she can see Jin, if she comes with him. Of course she doesn’t believe him and runs from him, only to run right into a tree and knocks herself unconscious.
She is found by Ben and brought back to the beach camp. Sun can no longer speak English, she can only understand it, due to the massive bump and subsequent concussion she gave herself. This makes her very frustrated, especially when Alpert returns and tells everyone they must destroy the plane to prevent Flocke from leaving.
Later on Jack shows Sun one of her tomatoes actually grew with his words being ‘no one told it, it was suppose to die”. Immediately one thinks of Sun’s baby, or at least I did. Sun’s baby is in peril in Sideways World, and at one point it was in peril in Season’s prior, due to women never being able to come to full term if impregnated on the island. Did anyone catch this?
When Flocke returns to the camp, Sun-less, and learns from Sayid that Jin has been taken. Flocke knows it is Charles Widmore’s doing, so Flocke takes off for Hydra Island, with Sayid to confront him.
Flocke meets up with Charles Widmore, Flocke on one side of the pylons in the beach and Widmore on the other. Widmore denies taking Jin and Flocke also knows Widmore has something up his sleeve that he is hiding on the submarine. This brings Flocke to declare ‘war’.
When he returns to camp, Sawyer and Kate realize something is really wrong for Widmore didn’t kill Flocke like they thought he would. Sawyer questions Flocke about bringing back Jin and Sayid’s lack of return. Flocke explains a bit of recon is in progress to check what it is hidden on the sub.
Sayid swims to the sub and being brought out on deck, is a drugged up and disoriented Desmond who falls on the dock and can now see Sayid hiding in the water. With a quizzical look on his face, he is pulled up and away by Widmore’s crew.
Many interesting things have been brought up in this episode. Kate no longer being a candidate, Sun’s baby in peril back-story, her perfectly timed Towel of Babel predicament, Desmond as “the package” and the so-called declaration of ‘war’ from Flocke.
Have you even begun to think what qualities are required for ‘the candidate’? How will one be chosen? When will one be chosen? How will they contain Flocke? Have you figured out why Desmond is “the package”? The little hint of being a ‘time-traveler’ may help you guess.
Is the Flocke dilemma the main reason why Widmore wanted to keep the island a secret? Is that why he wanted the Losties killed? Is this why the island has a mechanism on it to allow it to move? Will we ever find out why that portal on the island leads one to be dropped in Tunisia? What does the electromagnetic properties on the island have to do with stopping Locke? Can Sayid even be a candidate anymore now that he has ‘darkness’ in him? Will Claire ever brush her hair?
All six remaining candidates have had their time in the sun, with episodes revolving around their sideways story…this means more time will be spent in the present…hopefully.
What stood out in this episode that you want to discuss?
Funny Quotes
Flocke: We’re taking a boat ride over to the other island Sawyer: What do you need a boat for? Can’t you turn into smoke and fly your ass over the water?
