OBS RECAP & REVIEWS: LOST S6 EPISODE 13 ‘THE LAST RECRUIT’
Brought to you by OBS Staff Member Rose
For the first time since the beginning of the season, episode 13 starts exactly where episode 12 left off, as opposed to showing us a flash sideways of a certain character.
'The Last Recruit' encompassed all characters, (well almost all) like pieces of a puzzle that are being fit into place. For those who like it cut and dry….don’t you know the writers never make it so. I personally loved how all characters are being pushed closer and closer together. Both in reality and in sideways world.
As if you didn’t know from past write-ups…this recap and review is filled with SPOILERS.
Hurley and company have arrived into Flocke’s camp. Flocke immediately goes to work with his speech magic on Jack. Cause remember once he speaks to you…you’re on his side. Well, unbeknownst to Jack, this is exactly what happens. Jack also learns that it was the MIB who inhabited his father’s body after Oceanic 815 crashed.
The next morning, Widmore’s second in command, mousy Tina Fey, enters their camp in search of what Flocke stole, which is Desmond. Of course Flocke feigns ignorance and they are shown that if he doesn’t hand him over, Widmore will basically bomb their asses to smithereens.
Flocke organizes the group into separate entities in order to make their way to Hydra Island. Sawyer and Kate are in charge of heading to the sailboat at the docks. Flocke and the others (Hurley, Lapidis, Sun, Jack, Hurley included) will make their way through the jungle and rendezvous with Sawyer and Kate.
Sayid’s mission is to ‘take care’ of Desmond.
When Sayid approaches the well, prepared to shoot Desmond, Desmond asks him some questions about his morality in killing him. How would Nadia feel about the reasoning behind her return from the dead? Sayid’s thought process in the whole matter is tested by this question.
When Flocke sees Sayid returning (in the jungle) – Flocke questions whether he got the job done. As cool as a cucumber, with the same lack of emotion, Sayid states it has been done, even taunting Flocke to make sure and check himself. Flocke believes him.
Sawyer tells Kate of his alternate plan once they reach the boat. He explains they will not rendezvous with Flocke. Instead, he had pulled Jack aside and told him to gather the Losties, break off from Flocke and the group and meet at this dock. When Jack breaks off, they are unaware that Claire is watching them.
When they meet up with Sawyer and Kate and board the boat, Claire appears suddenly, gun in hand and demands to know what is going on. Kate steps up and is the one who assures her they will go home and to get on the boat with them. But not before she tells them all that Flocke will be very upset to know they have gone.
In sideways world, the Losties characters are being round up to meet each other, with Desmond (emanating Jacob) being the one who leads them via not so coincidental circumstances.
Real Locke, is in an ambulance, with Benjamin Linus and the EMT’s on the way to the hospital. Sun and Jin arrive at the hospital and Sun is placed on a gurney and rushed into surgery. At the same moment…Locke is being rushed down the hall as well, side by side with Sun. Sun looks over and recognizes Locke and says in Korean, “Oh no, it’s him!”
Meanwhile across town, Claire who meets Desmond (by chance) in the lobby of where the adoption agency, is persuaded to meet Desmond’s lawyer first before proceeding with the adoption. Which floor is both the adoption agency and his lawyer on? 15. One of the Lost Numbers. Who is the lawyer? Ilena. Curiously enough, she has been looking for Claire.
At the police station we see Sawyer flirting with Kate who is now in custody. Sawyer makes mention that it is highly coincidental that she and him happen to meet again after the Oceanic Flight 815 from Sydney. Miles tells Sawyer about the gun fight that just went down at the restaurant, mentioned Sun and Jin as witnesses and they have the suspect, showing Sayid exiting the restaurant on a surveillance video.
Sayid is packing his bags at Nadia’s house. He needs to flee and Nadia is curious about what has transpired. Police arrive at the house and Sayid is subsequently arrested by Miles and Sawyer.
Jack, on his way to his lawyer, who happens to be Ilena, meets Claire for the ‘first’ time and is told Claire is his sister. Dazed, Jack gets an emergency call from the hospital. He and his son (who was present with him) have to leave.
Sun wakes up from surgery and didn’t lose the baby. Passing Sun’s hospital room is Jack who goes in to look over his patient’s x-rays and when he gets into the OR to perform surgery, he recognizes Locke.
Back in real-time, the Losties are sailing the great ocean divide between Island #1 and Hydra Island when Jack has a change of heart. He decides that this plan of Sawyer’s is all wrong. Sawyer blatantly tells Jack to get off His boat. Jack still thinks (much like real Locke did) that the island is not done with them yet. They are there for a purpose. Jack jumps off the boat and swims back to Island #1.
Kate is flustered Jack has left, but there is no going back.
When Jack reaches shore, Flocke and Co greets him. Flocke knows the Losties have called Mutiny.
When the Losties reaches their destined shore “Hydra Island”, mousy Tina Fey and Co. greet them. Along with Jin who FINALLY is reunited with Sun. They embrace after a much-anticipated reunion. And voila, her English comes back to her as well. Honestly, it wasn’t as climactic and heartfelt as it could have been, due to the immediate change of heart from Widmore’s camp that immediately turn on the Losties. Widmore has reneged his original deal with Sawyer. Presumably because without Desmond, he doesn’t give a rats bum about any of them.
At that moment, Widmore bombs Flocke and Co on the other beach. Thrown by the blast, Jack lay dazed, ears ringing on the sand. He is picked up by Flocke who brings him to a safer place, as Flocke says ‘Don’t worry, you’re with me now’. Duhm duhm duhhm. Ominous drum music should start playing now.
The good news is Sayid may finally be out of his stupor. We know that Sayid didn’t really kill Desmond, for the show might as well be over.
Was Jack the Last recruit? Claire mentioned that Jack is ‘with’ Locke now, because he let him to speak to him. I say it’s a high probability.
Don’t the Losties know that they cannot trust Widmore? Hadn’t they experienced enough to know this from the freighter incident? Why Sawyer thought he could trust him is beyond me. Personally, they should have sailed off into the great big ocean…but that left would leave Jin on the island.
What is it about Flocke speaking to people makes them ‘follow’ him? Does he glamour them, so to speak? Or does he make one doubt everything by what he says which influences their decisions?
Sun’s epiphany in the hospital mean she knows Locke from the island. The past episodes, ‘love’ saved the day and awakened their consciousness. Is it Sun’s current trauma something that snapped her into realization?
No transcendental mind shifting happened for Jack and Claire. Nor between Ilena between Jack and Claire personally. Or does she already know and has kept mum?
Desmond has a Jacob quality about him that is undeniable. His smoothness in speech, his calm demeanor, his persuasiveness. Uncanny. Is Desmond time-traveling back and forth now concurrently? He does have all the time in the world, no pun intended, now that he is trapped in the well.
In order for the Losties to return to the island all of them had to be together as a unit. Flocke tells Jack in their little heart to heart, the only way they can leave the island is ALL of them together. Maybe we are asking the wrong questions. Why all? Is this because Jacob has chosen them? Jacob never actually pushed anyone to the island. He is notorious to allow others to act on ‘free will’. Why should free will not be a vein that runs through escape? Also, if they all must leave together, why did Jack choose to jump ship when all of them were finally together? Why go back to Flocke? His actions go against the very reasoning Flocke put to him in their chat.
Usually Jack doesn't like to be led. This change in him came about after the incident at the lighthouse, which was Jacob doing. So in essence Jacob's "little Jack plan", in turn, has contributed to Jack's change in personality which is now leading him like putty straight into Flocke's hands. Think about that for a moment.
Maybe this was all Jacob's plan to begin with.
What theories do you have to share?
