OBS RECAP & REVIEWS: LOST S6 EPISODE 6 ‘SUNDOWN’
Brought to you by OBS Staff Member Rose
Recap
Sayid exits a taxi in what we now know to be the flash sideways world. He knocks on the door of his destination and Nadia answers the door. Nadia is married to Sayid’s brother Omar, and they have two children. Over dinner Omar asks Sayid about all his travels and Sayid down plays his current work of translating oil contracts for a living, when Omar gets an important call and steps away from the dinner table. Nadia has been writing to Sayid while he has been away and questions why Sayid hasn’t replied. The kids find a picture of Nadia in Sayid’s bag and bring it over to their mother to see. Sayid and Nadia exchange glances as Omar stands across the kitchen, looking at them.
Sayid is at the temple and barges in on Dogen, demanding answers on why he wants him dead and what the device is that was used to torture him. Dogen explains that for every man, there is a scale. One side good, the other side evil and that is how the scale is balanced. Sayid tipped the scale the wrong way, which is why Dogen wanted to poison him. Dogen plainly states Sayid should be killed. A fight between the two ensues; Dogen gains the upper hand about to cut Sayid, when the baseball falls to the floor. The same one Dogen was playing with in his hand, in a previous episode. The baseball falling stops Dogen from killing Sayid, and instead Dogen tells Sayid to leave and never come back.
Claire and the smoke monster aka Fake Locke, stand just outside the temple. Claire wants Locke to promise her son back if she agrees to enter the temple. Claire in a matter of fact way states Locke will hurt them all. He answers only the ones that won’t listen.
In flash sideways world, his brother wakes Sayid who is staying at his home, at 2:30 in the morning. Omar tells Sayid that he is in big trouble with a loan shark. He has borrowed money and the loan shark now wants continual interest. Omar try to guilt Sayid into helping him and to use his past experience as an interrogator in the Iraqi Republican guard and try to ‘influence’ the loan shark to leave him and his family alone. Sayid refuses.
Back at the temple, Sayid tells Miles he is leaving because he has been banished. Sayid is confused by this, because the Others saved him and now they want him dead. Miles informs Sayid he was dead for two hours and that whatever saved him was definitely not the Others.
Claire comes into the temple courtyard and tells Dogen ‘he’ wants to see him. Dogen won’t leave the temple for he knows he’ll be killed if he steps outside of it. Dogen instructs the Others to take Claire hostage and put her in the hole. Dogen asks his assistant to find Jack and Hurley immediately. His assistant tells him this is difficult for they haven’t been seen. Dogen tells him to look harder and then requests Sayid to stay.
Inside the temple, Dogen takes a wooden box out from under some plants growing in a planter box. He tells Sayid that Claire is confused by an angry man who has been trapped on the island for many years and is evil incarnate. He wants Sayid to kill the smoke monster with the sword Dogen gives him. He instructs Sayid someone he knows will approaches him, but that person is not who they say they are and to plunge the sword into the person before they get a chance to speak, for if they do speak, all is lost. Dogen tells Sayid killing this evil person will prove there is still good in his soul.
In the flash sideways world, Sayid is walking his niece and nephew across the street to the bus stop. He tells them he will be leaving in a few days for Toronto. After the children on are on the bus, Nadia runs out of the house and calls out to Sayid in a panic. Omar is in the hospital with a punctured lung. They presume it is the work of the loan shark. Nadia urges Sayid not to do anything about it; it is Omar’s responsibility.
In the jungle, on his way to his task, Sayid runs into Kate. She asks what is going on back at the temple and he tells her to ask Myles when she gets there. When she arrives Miles tells Kate that Claire has returned but has been acting weird.
Sayid is in the jungle and a fierce wind kicks up. The smoke monster appears as Locke and Sayid plunges the sword into his chest as Dogen instructed him. Nothing happens.
Locke takes the sword, uninjured, from his chest and hands the sword back to Sayid. Locke feels sorry for Sayid. He tells him Dogen knew he had no chance of killing him and Dogen sent Sayid out so Locke would kill him. He does not. Instead Locke wants Sayid to deliver a message to Dogen and the Others. Locke promises Sayid he could have anything in the world that he wants. Sayid says the only thing he wants is Nadia, but she is dead. Locke hints he could see her again.
At Nadia’s house Sayid is fixing a broken vase, when Nadia enters and tells him that Omar had surgery and he is now awake. Nadia asks why Sayid didn’t want to be with her and mentions his carrying her picture around, questioning him further as to why he pushed her towards Omar. Sayid tells her he doesn’t deserve her for all the bad things he has done.
Sayid returns to the temple and tells everyone Jacob is dead and everyone is free. Everyone has till sundown to decide if they want to leave. The alternative is, if they decide to stay, they die.
Kate asks Dogen’s assistant where Claire is. He brings Kate to see her in the hole. Kate leans over, peers at Claire and asks why she is in the hole. Claire replies they have Aaron. Kate tells Claire that she has Aaron and she returned to the island to find her, rescue her, so she could be reunited with him. Claire expression turns evil and tells Kate she’s the one who needs to be rescued and that ‘he’ is coming and no one can stop him.
The Others are scattering in the courtyard and everyone is panicked. No one wants to take the risk and stay.
Sayid gets approached by two men outside of his brothers’ home and is threatened to get inside a car. They bring him to a empty dark restaurant and they enter the kitchen. A man is cooking over the stove, dressed in a suit, and asks Sayid if he wants some eggs. It is Keamy, (from the freighter).
He introduces himself at Martin Keamy. He is the loan shark. Keamy asks Sayid how his brother is doing and that he stills owes him money. Keamy starts telling Sayid a story when Sayid attacks his henchmen and points a gun at him. Keamy gets scared and forgives the debt, but Sayid shoots him anyway.
Sayid hears someone banging on the storage door off the kitchen. He opens the door and inside he finds Jin tied up to a chair. Sayid asks who he is, but Jin tells him he speaks no English.
Sayid returns the sword to Dogen and asks why Dogen didn’t simply kill him himself. Dogen tells Sayid he was a businessman once, in Osaka, at a bank. One day he was promoted, celebrated, and had too much to drink. Every Friday he would pick up his son from baseball. His son was 12. An accident happened. Dogen survived but his son did not. In the hospital a man came to him. A man he never met before, who told Dogen he could save son’s life. But in return he would have to come to island and start a new job and could never see son again.
Sayid sits down next to Dogen and asks who was this man. Dogen tells him it was Jacob. Dogen states the man outside gave Sayid a similar bargain.
It is now sundown and Dogen asks Sayid if he would choose to stay or go. Sayid tells him he is staying and grabs Dogen and they tussle in the Spring and ultimately Sayid drowns him. The baseball is seen floating in the spring.
Dogen’s assistant sees Dogen in the spring and goes in to get him. He tells Sayid that Dogen was the only one keeping it out. Sayid kills the assistant as well and says I know. The sound of the smoke monster is immediately heard.
It enters the courtyard and Kate runs to get Claire, while Miles goes through the temple tunnels. Someone is trying to break through one of the door and Miles tries to push up against it to keep them out. It is Ilena, who breaks through, and in enters Frank Lupidis, Ben Linus and Sun. Miles tells Sun that Jin is near. She is very excited at this news.
Kate jumps into the hole with Claire to escape the smoke monster as it passed over them.
Ben approaches Sayid by the Spring and tells him he knows of a way out. Ben sees a change in Sayid and realizes something is wrong and slowly steps back.
In the temple tunnels, Ilena pushes a square piece of stone in the wall, which opens a secret doorway. She instructs everyone to get inside.
Sayid is walking through the destruction in the courtyard. Claire comes out followed by Kate. Sayid and Claire meet Locke outside of the temple, with all the Others who joined him. Claire and Sayid have strange smiles on their faces. Kate comes outside looking that the group and is visibly perplexed.
Review
I just want to say, that regardless of the fact that Lost is a great show, I have a sinking feeling we are being misled when we think we will get any of our past questions fully answered. Each new episode is simply flowering the path to an end.
This season is all about highlighting each character and their relationship to the island. This week it was Sayid's turn.
Between Dogen telling one thing to Sayid and the smoke monster telling him otherwise…who can be trusted? Who do you think is telling the truth?
With Dogen and his assistant dead and the band of Others now following the smoke monster, what is the fate of everyone? Wasn’t Sawyer with Fake Locke previously? Why was he left out?
I questioned the significance of that baseball (to myself) two episodes ago, when he was shown twirling it in his hands. I was about to ask you all what you thought the significance was…but it just dawned on me. It was his son’s baseball. Ah, don’t you love when the light bulb goes off. One question though…why did his dropping of the baseball effect his decision to kill Sayid when he had the chance?
It is obvious that Sayid has crossed over to the dark side. Do you think he can be saved?
What does Jin have to do with Keamy and why was he in the storage room at the restaurant?
I swear I had a ‘Silence of the Lambs' it rubs the lotion moment when Kate peered over to look at Claire in the hole. Now that Claire knows Kate did in fact have Aaron, do you think she will try and kill Kate?
Oddly enough, there weren’t any blatant items of interest shown in this episode. Or perhaps I missed it. Did you see anything worth mentioning?
