OBS RECAP & REVIEWS: LOST S6 EPISODE 7 ‘DR. LINUS’
Brought to you by OBS staff member Rose

Just like every other Lost Episode this season, 'Dr Linus' focuses mainly on, of course, Benjamin Linus' character.

Recap
Ben is running through the jungle away from the temple after his encounter with Sayid and crosses paths with Ilena, Sun, Lapidis and Miles. He tells them Sayid killed The Leader and The interpreter. They all head to the beach.

Ben is teaching a history class about Napoleon, exile, and the loss of power in sideways world. The bell rings and after class, the Principal Reynolds tells Linus he has a schedule change and instead of his History Group he will instead supervise detention. Linus is against this and rather be there for his students academically than baby-sit.

In the teacher’s lounge, Ben is telling his woes to Leslie, a fellow teacher.
Locke overhears Ben talking and says maybe he should be the principal, since he cares about the school and the students more than Reynolds.

Trekking through the jungle, Ilena stops and wants Miles to sense how Jacob died from what is left of his body (the ashes).  Miles tells Ilena that Linus killed Jacob. Ben lies and says it’s not true. Ilena thanks Miles and she says Jacob was the closest thing she’s had to a father. They reach the beach. Ilena looks for tools for shelter. Ben asks if he could help and he is ignored.

Ben Linus is at home in sideways world and gives his father dinner. Linus complains he has a Doctorate in Modern European History and he’s babysitting detention and calls them ingrates.  He says he’s more a loser than any of them.  His father proclaims he wanted so much more for his son and that’s why he joined the Dharma Initiative and took him to the island. They would have been happier if they stayed. The doorbell rings. It is Alex (his daughter) who is a student member of his history club. She needs help with an AP test. They plan to meet the next day in the library.

On the beach, Ilena is gathering materials when Sun asks how long they will be staying on the beach. Ilena tells her they are candidates to replace Jacob and she is not sure which Kwon she is suppose to protect.  Sun asks how many candidates there are. Ilena tells her there are six left.

Hurley is woken up by Jack who suggests they get a move on. Hurley says they should take their time heading back to the temple but Jack doesn’t listen. Richard Alpert appears. Jack asks where he came from, and Richard states he wouldn’t believe it if he told them. Richard will tell Jack from where but now is not the time. He leads them to the direction to the temple.

Lapidis tells Ben he was supposed to be flying Oceanic flight 815 but his alarm didn’t go off. Ben says his life wouldn’t have been any different had he heard his alarm and woken up on time to make the flight.  The island still got him in the end. Ilena abruptly comes over and leads Ben by gunpoint, a few feet away from the beach, and cuffs him to a tree with a contraption she made and tells him to start digging a grave for himself.

Ben is tutoring Alex in the library when Alex calls Principal Reynolds a pervert.  Ben asks why she said that.  She has him promise not to say anything and tells him a story about being in the nurse’s office, and the nurse and the Principal were doing it in the room next to her.

Ben is digging his grave as Miles walks up to him with food. Ben is not hungry. Ben reminds him about 3.2 million dollars he was asked for by Miles and Ben promises it to him if he helps him. Miles told him that up until the last moment before Ben put the knife through his heart Jacob was hoping he was wrong about Ben and that he did care if he died.

Richard, Jack and Hurley arrive at the Black Rock. Richard tells them everyone at the temple was dead that’s why they’ve come there instead. Jack asks about his friends and Richard is not sure about their whereabouts. Jack sees Hurley is not surprised by this and asks if he knew something and that is why he was stalling before. Hurley says Jacob mentions this information to him at one point. Richard tells Hurley don’t believe what Jacob tells him. Richard walks off and says he needs to go die.

Ben walks up to Leslie and asks him if he could hypothetically access an email account, namely Nurse Kim, cause he’s curious about her correspondence. Leslie wants to know all the details.  Ben tells him the story. Leslie realizes his ploy to take over the Principal job and tells him he wants a great parking spot (amongst other things) in exchange for his help.  They make a deal.

Inside the black rock, Jack finds Alpert. Alpert picks up some dynamite. Hurley is nervous and suggests to Jack they leave. Alpert says he cannot kill himself. He’s been touched by Jacob and when Jacob touches you it is a gift but more like a curse. Jacob never shared Alpert’s purpose, and now that Jacob is dead, and still doesn’t know, his whole life is meaningless and now he wants to die but he needs help.  Jack agrees to help Alpert kill himself.
Jack lights a long fuse for a stick and says left talk.

Jack tells Hurley to leave. Jack tells Alpert he just came form the lighthouse and what took place.  Jack tells him he’s on the island for a hirer purpose and he tests the fuse of the dynamite….and it doesn’t blow them up. Jack laughs. Richard asks him now what and Jack suggests go back to where they started.

While digging, Ben hears the smoke monster in the jungle and Locke appears. Ben points out Ilena and that she will kill him.  Locke says he gathering a group to leave and Locke wants Ben to be in charge of the island when he goes.  Suddenly his cuff is open and Locke tells him to come to the other island to meet him.

Ben suddenly runs off and Ilena gives chase.

Ben hands the Principal the emails. Ben wants him to resign with Ben as a replacement. He in turn says he wants to read him an email.   It’s an email from Alex to the Principal requesting a recommendation for Yale. The side affect of Ben taking over will be the Principal torching Alex’s future. So Ben has to decide what is more important.

In the jungle Ilena is forced to drop her gun, when Ben points a gun at her. Ben wants to explain himself.  He talks about his daughter dying in front of him in the name of Jacob and makes Ilena see how he feels about everything and apologizes.  Ben wants to leave and go with Locke cause he’s the only one who will have him. Ilena says she will have him.  Ben is stunned and follows her back.

Ben goes into Principal’s office while he is not there. Alex comes in and tells her the principal wrote her a really good recommendation. The Principal enters his office, Ben tells Alex that History Group is back on and hse is happy. Afterwards Leslie asks if Ben ‘did it’.  Ben tells him he did not. Ben offers up his own parking space when Leslie complains about his.

Back at the beach Ben re-joins the group. Ben is helping Sun make shelter, when Jack and Hurley reach the beach and they reunite with everyone.

Out in the ocean a periscope appears and is watching them on the beach. Inside the submarine a man mentions to Charles Whitmore he sees people on the beach and Whitmore tells him to pay them no mind.

Review
Once again, old plot lines were revisited and reinterpreted, possibly to remind us of character conflicts in seasons past.

One major revelation we found out was that in Sideways World for Benjamin Linus, the island was still part of his life and he was in fact on it, with his father, who was part of the Dharma Initiative.  The difference is they left the island, probably before the hatch was even built. Who knows I’m just speculating.

Where did Jin go? He was at the temple with Ilena and her crew when the smoke monster was attacking everyone in the last episode.  He just disappeared.  The reunion on the beach between Sun and Hurley and Jack was so heart warming, it is a shame it wasn’t topped off with more emotional teary-eyed goodness with a reunion between Jin and his wife. As I watched them all hug, I thought to myself, the writers passed on a good opportunity here, what is going on?

The fuse going out on the dynamite definitely means Jacob is looking out for them, or they just got lucky.  What do you think? Will we ever find out the deal with Richard Alpert? Where was Richard Alpert before he appeared to Jack and Hurley?

The appearance of Charles Whitmore at the end seemed like it was thrown in for good measure just to gain an Oooooh….what does this mean now?

Frankly, I’m starting not to care too much. I feel Lost has Lost it’s mojo. I hope they bring it back soon.

Items of Note:

The Chosen by Chaim Potok, the book lying on the beach, when Ben grabs a water.

The book is about the friendship of two young boys in 1940’s Brooklyn. Here is a major plot point of note:

‘They meet for the first time as rivals in a baseball game between their school teams that turns into a spiritual war. Danny's batting style is such that the ball is sent speeding back up the middle, and so he receives a reputation of trying to kill pitchers. Angered by unsuccessful attempts to hit Reuven's previous pitches, Danny hits a line drive toward Reuven, shattering his glasses and sending him to the hospital, with an injured eye.
Danny visits Reuven in the hospital, and Reuven at first rejects his attempts to apologize. Reuven's father, however, insists that he make peace with Danny, telling him "A boy like that needs friends." After a struggle a friendship develops between the two. Reuven learns about Danny's life, and finds that the Hasidic boy is very different from his expectations. Danny admits to Reuven "I wanted to kill you" when they played baseball together, but did not know why; after a soul-search, Danny realized he was jealous of Reuven's more conventional lifestyle.”

This mimic's Ben’s apology to Ilena for killing Jacob and his lack of friends on the island and his acceptance with Ilena’s “side”.

Funny Hurley Quotes:

“Cheese carrots”, said half asleep.

“If you change your mind, I’ll be like a mile away”, when Jack stays to talk with Alpert as the fuse on the dynamite is burning down.

Where did Jin go?
I don't remember Jin being with Ilana and her crew at the temple.  The last place I remember seeing Jin was in Claire's tent.  I assumed that he was still in the jungle.

The fuse going out on the dynamite definitely means Jacob is looking out for them, or they just got lucky.  What do you think? Will we ever find out the deal with Richard Alpert? Where was Richard Alpert before he appeared to Jack and Hurley?
I think that there's definitely some kind of "higher power" intervention going on with them.  I am dying to know what's up with Richard.  Seeing the shackles and chains inside the ship lends credence to the theory that he was once a slave, seeing how he said last night that it was the first time he'd been back to the ship since his arrival.  I was really thinking that we'd get to know where he was from or how old he is last night.  I am going to assume that he told Jack and Hurley the truth and that he had just been to the temple before finding them.

The appearance of Charles Whitmore at the end seemed like it was thrown in for good measure just to gain an Oooooh….what does this mean now?
That was another WTF moment for me.  I don't have a clue as to what it means other than he's ready for war...or is he there to help Fake Locke and his followers leave as he has promised to them?

Maybe they left because of the explosion at the hatch while it was being built?

Did anyone notice Miles holding a diamond near the end?
