"For you I bleed myself dry"

For this month’s edition of OBS ‘Must-See’ List – we are covering Angels, movies that are a definite must-see that involve these angelic creatures. OBS Staff members have complied a few movies, that are all about our theme ‘Angels’ and that we think everyone should check out.

Constantine - (2005) Dawn

John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) was born with a gift or a curse to see demons and angels walking this earth disguised as humans. Demons and angels cannot make a person do anything, but they can whisper in your ear and give you an urge to do it. As a child, John could not understand what he was seeing, and he had enough of this life and wanted to leave this cruel world by killing himself. Unfortunately for John, he is saved from death, and now must atone for his act. John is given extraordinary powers, and becomes a guardian on earth. Whenever a demon breaks the rules, John exorcises them and sends them back to Hell. John is known by the police for working in the supernatural field of the occult, and Los Angeles police detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) wants his help in her investigation. Angela has discovered that spirits are walking the earth, and she believes they had some connection to the suicide of her twin sister. Angela becomes aware that John can see these spirits, and she wants to see them too. John reluctantly grants her wish. John and Angela must deal with representatives of both Heaven and Hell to save humanity. Douglas Young (the-movie-guy) (IMDB.com)

Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia LeBouf, Tilda Swinton – a dynamic cast for an interesting movie.
My favorite part of the movie was Gavin Rossdale as the demon Balthazar. If he’s in hell, I’m ready to go there too. He’s a seductive demon and he’s damn hot!

City of Angels - (1998) Dawn

Seth, an angel watching over Los Angeles, begins finding his job difficult as he falls in love with Maggie, a beautiful heart surgeon. She becomes interested in Seth, and soon his not-quite-mortal state seems a barrier rather than a gift. A choice must be made between celestial duty and earthly love. Written by Matthew C. Powell (IMDB.com)

City of Angels is a touching story. Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage were perfect for their parts. Seth falls in love with the beautiful compassionate doctor Maggie. He gives up his status to be with her but there is no happily ever after.

What Dreams May Come - (1998) Chris

Soul mates Chris (Robin Williams) and Annie (Annabella Sciorra) have an idyllic marriage together. However, following the death of their two children in a car accident, Annie becomes isolated and mentally unstable from guilt, and is institutionalized. After four years, the couple reconciles, but on the anniversary of the event Chris is killed in a car accident, finding himself in a Heaven derived from his wife’s paintings.

Despite the paradise he now inhabits, Chris is unhappy without Annie. When she commits suicide in guilt over Chris’ death, the act consigns her to Hell. Determined that they belong together, Chris commences a quest through Hell to rescue her, in the process discovering a number of characters from his past.

This is one of my favorite movies, the concept behind the book & movie, is very tragic and very uplifting. I’m a huge fan of Dante’s Inferno (The Divine Comedy) and this movie gives at-est to the realm Dante created, and we see some painful things with Chris’s journey to find Annie..but some very beautiful ones too, like finding his children again in heaven. Plus the imagery of this movie is astounding, the colors of heaven are like a painting, and the you see and feel all the emotions through the image on screen.

Dogma -(1998) Chris

An old man looks at the ocean from a New Jersey boardwalk outside a skee ball arcade. He is beaten into a coma by three hockey stick-wielding teenagers, the Stygian Triplets.

Two fallen angels — Bartleby (Ben Affleck), a watcher, and Loki (Matt Damon), formerly the Angel of Death — were banished from Heaven after Bartleby convinced Loki to quit his position and find one that doesn’t involve mass slaughter. This culminates in Loki giving God the finger, and both angels being exiled to Wisconsin and permanently banned from Heaven. The two see their potential salvation when a church in Red Bank, New Jersey, celebrates its centennial anniversary with a plenary indulgence. By passing through the doors of the church, they can have their sins forgiven and upon death regain access to Heaven. They don’t realize by doing this they will overrule the word of God. Since the basis of existence is that God is infallible, proving God wrong would destroy existence.

This movie is so funny! I love Kevin Smith and when he gets these stars together (Ben, Matt, Alan, etc) is pure genius! Heck, Kevin casts Alanis Morrisette as God, how cool is that! The movie is very entertaining with the bad angels causing destruction and Jay & Silent Bob trying to help the ‘good’ side stop the world ending…what could be better?

Have you seen these movies listed above? If so, what did you think? Do you have any must-see movies about angels, well then tell us which ones here!
