Never Ceese by Sue Dent
Chapter 10 by Krystal

At Mama’s bedroom, Penny asks Richard to sit down with her on the bed. Penny admits that she is very sick, cancer in fact, and that Ceese can’t help her. She’s kept him in the dark for so long thinking it would be easier, now that Ceese is here. Richard, distraught, doesn’t understand how Ceese being around makes any difference. Penny explains that he has to take care of Ceese, but Richard assumes she’s joking. Richard tries to explain to Penny that it makes no sense, Ceese hates him and he isn’t exactly fond of her.

Trying to avoid all conversation about Ceese, he asks how long Penny has left. Penny explains that she has a month, maybe more, and that Richard must help Ceese free herself of her curse. Richard reminds her that last time it didn’t work for him and only she knows why.

Not wanting to let Penny go, Richard offers her to stay with him forever, but she doesn’t want that. Threatening to turn her, Penny reminds the vampire of the cross and garlic she has with her. Reassured that Richard was back in control, Penny says that she will wait for him in heaven, but Richard says he’s cursed and cannot think of the place let alone go there.

After some more conversation, Penny pulls a wallet-sized picture and note from her bedside table and shows Richard. Penny tells Richard how she was married to a man named George, how she loved him, but how he died. The picture is of her granddaughter, Cassie. Penny wants Richard and Ceese to visit Cassie in New York. Cassie believes in vampires and werewolves and wants to help them.

After Richard and Penny’s conversation, Richard he’s to the basement as Ceese watches him walk away, wondering what Penny told him.

Questions for consideration:

Were you shocked by Penny’s illness?

What do you think Richard meant when he said last time ‘it didn’t work for me’?

Did you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter? If so, what?

Were you shocked by Penny’s illness?
I knew something was up with Penny, but I didn't think it was THAT bad.

What do you think Richard meant when he said last time ‘it didn’t work for me’?
This was something that I didn't get the first time I read through the book, but reading it again it stuck out more to me. It's something easily overlooked the first time, but ultimately very important.

Did you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter? If so, what?
I wondered why Penny didn't want Richard to change her. I mean it seems like she'd want to stay with him. So there's something there. Also the whole thing with it not working for Richard last time... foreshadowing that event.

Were you shocked by Penny’s illness?
This was such a difficult decision for me to make as the author . . . whether Penny should pass or not.

What do you think Richard meant when he said last time ‘it didn’t work for me’?
Yes. One of those things that definitely catches you on the second read. That's right. Many want to read it again. *Sue smiles appreciatively*

Did you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter? If so, what?
I don't think it's fair for me to comment on foreshadowing. LOL

Yikes, I don't have my copy in front of me to get a quote. But I particularly like the section where Penny has Richard recite, from memory, John 3:16. I like the way he does it for her despite the extreme anguish, disgust and pain he suffers. He truly loves her so. *Sue bites nails* I hope that was in this chapter and I didn't just mess something up. LOL

I thought it would be an interesting twist to have someone say that verse with such hatred and even more interesting to see how Penny knew it was important for Richard to remember his father, someone she knew he loved in spite of what he claimed.

Were you shocked by Penny’s illness?
No, but I was surprised it was that advanced and I was so sad for Richard.

What do you think Richard meant when he said last time ‘it didn’t work for me’?

I had no idea what this meant until later in the book.
