Never Ceese by Sue Dent
Chapter 2 by Dawn

Peter Drummond is walking his herd of goats near a castle that is likened to the times of Robin Hood and King Arthur. He sees it as a sinister place. He blames those inhabiting the castle for their disappearing animals....he decides that he must confront them.

Richard, inside the castle, toys with his computer as he drinks blood from a cup. He has been a vampire for over two centuries and he has acquired the blood he is drinking by claiming he is a doctor procuring blood for his mother’s blood transfusion.

His Mama, named Penelope, is not actually his mother at all, but they refer to her as such to explain the ever growing age difference between them. Penelope is 82 and Richard is 24.

Penelope is in a wheelchair and we learn that Richard enjoys caring for her in her old age. As they argue over Penelope's strong will, we see how much she adores Richard. They have been together for many years and she loves him very deeply. They are companions and enjoy one another's company. She hints at a plan that she believes will change things for Richard.

Penny tells Richard that Peter Drummond stopped by while he "slept" - Richard admits he took a couple of Peter's goats but he will pay Peter for them.

Speaking of Penny's plan, she tells Richard that "she" is coming (a guest of Penny's). Richard does not welcome the intrusion of this guest who he has been told about for months.

Questions for consideration:

What are your thoughts on Penny's plan and her surprise guest?

What do you think of the relationship between Richard and Penny?

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?

I had a feeling that Penny and the wolf were connected so it wasn't very much of a surprise.

What do you think of the relationship between Richard and Penny?
I think it's really cute. I love how it doesn't matter that she's an old woman he still loves her the same way he did when they met (even if he can't admit it's love).

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
I'm kind of curious when Richard and Penelope met for the first time. It seem's they've known each other forever, definately for most of her life.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
Nothing really hits me hard. It's a nice little chapter. I really like all the banter between Richard and Penelope though, but I can't pick like one line.

I hadn't fully picked up on the wolf/Penny connection yet, so I was a bit baffled.

What do you think of the relationship between Richard and Penny?
I found his loyalty touching. He wasn't able to show his love very maturely but it was a deep love nonetheless.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
I wondered about Richard and Penny's past, how they met, what they spent all those years doing..

From the author:

What are your thoughts on Penny's plan and her surprise guest?
Penny was going to have such a small role when I started this book. She sort of took over though. :)

What do you think of the relationship between Richard and Penny?
A telling picture of true love.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?

Two quotes actually.
"I don't feel sorry for him. He'd have the money if he didn't squander it all on loose women and bad booze."

[and in response to allegations that Richard had been spying on Peter Drummond.]
"Let's just say our friend Peter doesn't try very hard to keep what he's doing--when he's doing it--a secret." He made a disgusted noise in his throat. "Pigs make less noise."

Richard has some pretty classic quotes throughout the book. He doesn't BS around, that's for sure.

He kind of reminds me of me. Just says what comes to his head without much thought. I think he doesn't feel a need to pretend to be anyone around penelope. He can just say what he thinks.

All of these characters were so fun to write! But then, I wouldn't have written about them if they hadn't been. LOL Who'd want to read that?  iamShocked

I'm curious though, based on what y'all have read so far, what actor do you think you could see playing Richard. I'll tell you who I had in mind but only after someone posts who they think . . . if anyone posts that is. :)

Well, the sequel to Never Ceese, Forever Richard should give a really good idea. The cover model is co-owner of a popular social network and volunteered to model after I told him he put me in the mindset of Meri. Then I saw in the pictures he sent that he now put me in the mindset of Richard. LOL He did a fantastic job and so did my publisher putting it all together.

HOWEVER, as I was writing, the actor I had in mind was Alexander Gudnov only he was a bit too feminine for Richard. IMO And sadly, Alexander is no longer with us. But the idea is at least shoulder length very blonde hair as Richard bleaches his. Oh, a casting couch. That would save time for when the movie comes out. LOL  iamhyper

I'm gonna skim through and do a casting couch for Never Ceese this weekend... I really have to look at some actors. I think the huge name actors are too well known to play Richard and Ceese. I'd have to delve into some actor research LOL.

WAIT! This is my favorite quote from this chapter. I just forgot it was in this chapter. LOL

Sparked by her look, he headed toward the door, grumbling. "Fifty years . . . a snail travels faster!"
