Never Ceese by Sue Dent Chapter 23 by Angela, Krystal, Rose
Rodney finds the payphone he was looking for and rushes toward it. Richard leans against a brick wall until a small bat swoops down and settles on him and he smacks it away. Ceese notices this stares at him. Richard tries to explain how there would be more if he did not feed soon and Ceese tries to understand how 20 or so small bats would be an issue, but Richard quickly clarifies that he is talking about hundreds. Desperate to help, Ceese peers out of the alley and asks what B-A-N-K spells. Richard informs her that this is not the time for a reading lesson, but she rebuts that he might be interested in this particular bank because to her it said ‘Blood Bank’. Richard immediately runs to her side to see for himself and sure enough it was such a bank.
They head to make a withdrawal while Rodney returns to find them missing. Panicking, he looks around and is assisted by a drunk pedestrian who points the way. When Rodney finally reaches the others, he notices that the building has been abandoned for a long while and apologizes. As they consider breaking in, the pedestrian who helped Rodney walks into traffic and is hit by a car. As a crowd gathers, an ambulance arrives and Ceese asks where they will be taking him. Rodney explains that they will take him to a hospital and take care of his injuries and give him blood.
Richard and Ceese immediately focus on Rodney. Ceese points out that the man was intoxicated and asked if one needed to be. Rodney, a little confused at the question, says yes, but then changes it to no; one did not need to be intoxicated to be hit by a car and taken to the hospital. Before he can even finish his sentence, Ceese pushes Richard into oncoming traffic where a Mercedes hits him to unconciousness. Shocked, Rodney runs to Richard’s side and asks why on earth would she would do that. She explains that Richard can’t die, but right now he needs blood.
Freaked out, the driver exits her car and tries to bribe Rodney to say that Richard fell. With a five hundred dollar down payment, Rodney agrees and they all wait for the police. When the medic arrives he notices that Richard is bleeding and Ceese says he needs blood. The medic agree, but need to stabalize him first. As the medic atten to Richard, the police ask Rodney what happened. As promised, Rodney lies and says that Richard got off balance and fell into the street. Unfortunately, there was a witness who refutes Rodney and points to Ceese as the culprit. Knowing the man had obviously seen everything, including the woman giving him money, Rodney decides to bribe the man by using verbal trickery. Easy come; easy go he thinks as he returns to the others.
As the medics work on Richard, they notice he has no pulse and Ceese almost blurts out why, but Rodney stops her, and reasserts silently if Richard can die. When Ceese asks why, he points out that they are going to shock his body in a second to get his heart beating. Concerned, Ceese reaches out and puts her hand on Richard’s leg and the medic all of a sudden gets a pulse. Rodney stares in amazement at Ceese.
Finally stable, the medics load Richard into the ambulance and head toward the hospital. After a few minutes, the ambulance starts swerving everywhere and the medic in back complains. The driver apologizes and says he can’t help it because there are bats everywhere. Rodney turns to Ceese, but she shruggling replies that she can’t talk about it, which he considers to be just as well since he’d rather not know.
Questions for consideration:
Where you shocked that Ceese could misunderstand so much that she would push Richard into moving traffic just to get him blood?
What do you think of Ceese's ability to give Richard a heartbeat just by touching his skin? Looks like she has more powers.
