Never Cees by Sue Dent
Chapter 3 by Dawn

In this chapter, we are back with the wolf turned human as she finds clothing. As she does so, she recalls her father dressing her as a young child. She is headed toward a castle and a woman she is supposed to meet, an old woman named Penny.

Finally, we know the name of our wolf – Ceese, which is short for Cecilia Collette Porter of Port Hampton Wales, she was born in 1802.

Penny believes herself to be responsible for Ceese being a wolf. Ceese left years before to roam the woods to protect Penny from herself.

Richard comes in with Mama's breakfast to find her outside. He tries to go out to her but he is burned by the sun.

Penny is outside awaiting the arrival of her guest, Ceese. Penny grows weak and Ceese carries her inside where Richard is surly to her. Ceese responds by causing him mental pain, but how she has done it is a mystery. Richard describes the pain as an intense headache. Ceese communicates with Richard using her mind as well. Once Richard sees that she means Mama no harm, he leaves to drink some blood before retiring to “sleep” for the day. He intends to sleep outside of his coffin so he can keep an eye on Mama.

Questions for consideration:

What did you think of the reaction Richard had to Ceese?

What did you make of Ceese’s ability to mentally harm Richard and communicate with him telepathically?

Richard is burned by sunlight and must sleep during the day. Do you prefer vampires to have a more traditional role, as Richard does?

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?

Did you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter?

Classic. I love how he's like... there's no such thing, but doesn't even think twice about the fact that 'hey i'm a vampire'.

What did you make of Ceese’s ability to mentally harm Richard and communicate with him telepathically?
I wonder if this is just Richard because he's a vampire or if she did it on purpose. She doesn't seem to harm other's, but is that because she doesn't want to or because they aren't vampires.

Richard is burned by sunlight and must sleep during the day. Do you prefer vampires to have a more traditional role, as Richard does?
I think I like the more traditional vamps because it leaves them vulnerable. The whole sparkley skin or wearing lapis is just so cheap to me. It's like saying... I want them to have no flaws.

Did you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter?
Not that I can think of. Maybe Sue can clue us in on something.

Richard is such a vamp! LOL

I found this . . . intriguing. *sly grin*

Oh there are so many kinds of vampires. For instance you have the ones who feed off of others psychic energy such as The Vampire Don[Henrie] but I chose to write about the traditional kind with only a few of my own speculations on how they might operate.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?

I can't wait to hear more about why Richard was hesitant about not sleeping in his coffin.  :)

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?

She had put the dress back on then. Father's puzzled expression prompted her to explain her change of heart. "I would rather itch than to make Mother feel bad."

Did you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter?
Oh yes, there is a bit of embedded foreshadowing here. :)
