Never Ceese by Sue Dent
Chapter 14 by Angela, Krystal, Rose

Phillip Darden, head of Financial Affairs has a meeting with the school council regarding the important 4.7 million dollar impending grant and who shall helm the program. The college cannot afford to lose such an important grant simply because they can’t seem to find anyone to run it. Darden believes his cousin, Dr. Clayton Henderson, would be a perfect fit for such a program. Little does the council know that Henderson is mooching off of his cousin and Darden wants rid of him. What the council does know is that Henderson was fired from his previous position, due to his illegal stem cell collection. After deliberating on the huge trust issue, the council eventually decides to give Henderson a chance and hires him.

On Henderson’s first day of teaching, he picks a student by the named Rodney Kincaid. Rodney, not known to be intelligent, surprises everyone with an insightful and correct answer to Henderson’s question. When class end all the students leave except Rodney who stays behind to talk to Henderson. Turns out, Rodney is actually working for Henderson supplying him with information on Cassie Felt, his roommate. Before Rodney leaves class, Henderson instructs Rodney to have Josh make a visit to his house. Rodney hesitates, but agrees and leaves.

Henderson returns to his office and pulls out his file marked “Cassie”. Like Henderson, Cassie was interested in immortality, but she believes it actually exists. She believes that vampires and werewolves are real and claims to know some. Convinced that stem cell research is the key to curing them, Henderson has convinced her confide in him and deems their meeting fate. Believing Cassie to be naïve and gullible he uses her knowledge in the hopes of becoming immortal.

Questions for consideration:

Do you believe that stem cell research can actually cure vampires and werewolves?

What do you think Rodney is getting in return for helping Henderson?

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you’d like to discuss with the book club?

Chapter 15 by Angela, Krystal, Rose

Back at Rodney’s apartment, Cassie returns to find Rodney on her computer. He tells her there was a virus going around and he downloaded a patch to protect her computer. Suspicious, Cassie gets on her computer and scrolls through the history. After confirming his story, he grabs his backpack and heads for the door. She stops him mid-flight and asks if he had looked through her emails, for she was expecting one and still has yet to receive it. He replies by saying he simply downloaded the patch and never checked her emails and heads out the door.

With Rodney gone, Cassie settles in, mind wandering and considers her educational decision to attend Templeton University. She originally came to Templeton to broaden her choices, but only found it more confusing. After receiving her degree in biology, she decided to stay on for her Masters, but a year into her graduate studies, the university added on the biomedical engineering program. Lucky for her, Professor Henderson was the head of the program and had allowed her to get her foot in the door.

Meanwhile, Rodney phones Henderson and proceeds to leave a message when he receives no answer, stating he forwarded Cassie’s email and covered his tracks by erasing it. He then goes to the library all the while thinking about his working relationship with Henderson. He is really not partial to the man, but the money is good. The thing he dislikes most is betraying Cassie in the process.

Questions for consideration:

What do you think the email was about?

Do you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter? If so, what?

Rodney meet the book club. Book club meet Rodney. Rodney has a pretty big fan club but there are a few who don't like him. But it's a healthy dislike. LOL

Do you believe that stem cell research can actually cure vampires and werewolves?
I believe Cassie thinks it can. :)

What do you think Rodney is getting in return for helping Henderson?
Rodney seems to be very comfort oriented. I think he's probably just getting money.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you’d like to discuss with the book club? The fact that Henderson cares so little about the value of human life that he would consistently  break the law just to work with the more desirable embryonic stem cells.

What do you think the email was about?
I'm more curious as to why Rodney felt he needed to delete it. *gasp*

Do you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter? If so, what?
*Sue waves author flag* :)

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?

Dr. Henderson: When you signed up for this course, did you have a permanent address?

She seemed uncertain about how to answer.
Student:  "Yes?"

He looked up from the paper, glared at her.

Dr. Henderson: This isn't Jeopardy. You don't have to answer in the form of a question."

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you’d like to discuss with the book club? That as conniving as Henderson seems, Rodney actually seems to care. He was worried when he thought Henderson was feeding Josh drugs for his cooperation.

I personally like Rodney, just putting that out there.

Do you believe that stem cell research can actually cure vampires and werewolves?
I don't know for certain... I mean if you go with the mythical "curse" theory it's hard to believe that a scientific thing can cure it. I do believe if you think of it more as a disease then yea I imagine that stem cell's could.

What do you think Rodney is getting in return for helping Henderson?
Sex and drugs... no Rodney loves living comfortable... I agree with Sue.

WTH is Henderson such a jerk to everyone.... the guy must of had a bad childhood.

What do you think the email was about?
Yea I dunno.... The conversation was probably personal though... damnit Rodney and your snooping.

Do you notice any foreshadowing in this chapter? If so, what?
I think there's some definate foreshadowing of just how involved both Henderson and Rodney are involved with Cassie's "friends".

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?

Henderson: "Mr. Kincaid." "Define, if you would for the rest of the class, phospholipids."

Rodney Kincaid wasn't exactly known for his intellect. Not many could believe he'd survived this long in college except that he stayed jacked up on caffeine, popping NoDoz like candy.

Rodney: "Phospholipids," Rodney replied boldly. "That would be the major membrane lipid. You know, the one with one end charged and the other being nonpolar."

=========================================================

As she yelled, she yanked at the band holding back her auburn hair. It fell to her shoulders and her blue eyes flashed at Rodney, making her look like a female Mel Gibson in the movie Braveheart.

Just keep in mind, this is Cassie's idea. I think Cassie is more of a realist and wants to put a logical explanation with everything. There's nothing to suggest (so far) whether her thinking is accurate. It is clear she wants to help those who don't want to live as vampires or werewolves. :)

Yea I agree... I think Cassie is a realist. It's strange that she believes in mythical creatures, but it seems she only does on the basis that she could prove they are real or that they can be cured.

Her fascination with them in other words... was a fuled by the desire to prove that  the scientific "real" versions exist.

Screw the ones in novels... I know they are real and i'm going to prove it.

Yes. I think many scientist are like this and engineers (and Spock. LOL.) It's just beyond them to accept things without having some "logical" explanation. It's the way they're wired. It's like understanding exactly how something works will of course help you fix it if it's broke. I think Cassie's logic makes some sense but I think even she knows she's going to have to do a lot more investigating. :)
