New Moon Book Club, Chapter Three – The End by Nikki

Bella can tell something is not right with Edward. He begins to distance himself from her more and more. While trying to cope with Edward as he shuts her out, she is saddened to hear that Alice and Jasper have left Forks because of the incident at the party. Bella desperately tries to roust Edward out of his gloom but nothing works. Finally, on the edge of the woods near Bella’s house, Edward breaks up with Bella. Edward and the rest of the Cullen’s are moving away from Forks and are not going to return. He informs her that she will not be going with them.

Bella tries to follow Edward as he runs away but quickly gets lost and falls to the forest floor. She curls up into a ball and lays there for a long time crying. She is found by Sam Uley and taken home where a doctor examines her. The doctor confirms that the Cullen’s have left Forks.

Bella falls asleep and is later awakened by a phone call. The Quileute’s are celebrating the departure of the Cullen’s. This news makes Bella even sadder at the loss of Edward. Bella has a conversation with her father about it and goes to her room to find some kind of solace. Once in her room she remembers the CD that Edward gave her for her Birthday. She looks for it and finds that it’s gone, as are all pictures of Edward. This news is unbearable and she collapses to the floor out of grief and despair. October, November, December and January pass by.

Memorable Quotes:

“There was something buried in his eyes that I couldn’t be sure of—and it scared me.” Bella Swan, pg 53

“Change was coming. I could feel it. It wasn’t a pleasant prospect, not when life was perfect the way it was.” Bella Swan, pg 60

“The contrast between the two of us was painful. He looked like a god. I looked very average, even for a human, almost shamefully plain.” Bella Swan, pg 65

“He smiled my favorite crooked smile, but it was wrong. It didn’t reach his eyes.” Bella Swan, pg 67

“I don’t care! You can have my soul. I don’t want it without you—it’s yours already! Bella Swan, pg 69

“I promise that this will be the last time you’ll see me. I won’t come back. I won’t put you through anything like this again. You can go on with your life without any more interference from me. It will be as if I’d never existed.” Edward Cullen, pg 71

“With shaky legs, ignoring the fact that my action was useless, I followed him into the forest. The evidence of his path had disappeared instantly. There were no footprints, the leaves were still again, but I walked forward without thinking. I could not do anything else. I had to keep moving. If I stopped looking for him, it was over. Love, life, meaning… over.” Bella Swan, pg 73

Were you surprised by Edward’s behavior in this chapter?
I expected him to be kicking himself for what happened at the party.  It was very reminiscent of how he acted in the hospital when Bella woke up and suggested that she should go live in Jacksonville so that he couldn't hurt her again.

Did you think he was going to break up with Bella?
I suspected it because of what he had told her in the hospital in Phoenix - that he would stay "as long as that was best" for her.

What did you think of what he said to her when he broke up with her?
I was stunned by how cold his words were.  I thought that it was interesting how Bella heard them..."Bella, I don't want you to come with me," and Bella's interpretation was that he didn't want her.  Another..."You're not good for me, Bella," and Bella heard it as she wasn't good enough for him.  Again, we see how Bella feels so unworthy of having Edward.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
Sam Uley asked Bella, "Have you been hurt?"  Dr. Gerandy asked, "Are you hurt, Bella?"  Sam's question was definitely loaded, as if he suspected something might have been done to her. Even in her stupor, Bella picked up on the difference in the way the two questions had been posed.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
The fact that "Bella" had left a note for Charlie telling him that she'd gone for a walk in the woods with Edward.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
"You can have my soul.  I don't want it without you - it's yours already!"

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
When Sam brings Bella back to Charlie he tells everyone that he doesn't think that she's hurt, but keeps saying, "He's gone."  Bella hadn't realized that she'd been saying it out loud.

Questions for Consideration:

Were you surprised by Edward’s behavior in this chapter?
Yes, I thought he would at least tell Bella what was going on before laying it all down on her in the woods.  Obviously he was thinking about this for a few days.  I guess I thought she deserved more after everything they went through.

Did you think he was going to break up with Bella?
No, I knew something was coming but I never actually thought he would leave.

What did you think of what he said to her when he broke up with her?
When it started I knew what was coming but Wow it was really more harsh than I thought Edward would be.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
Right before Sam found her when she heard some kind of animal around her then it was gone.  I loved it because Sam was in his wolf form to find her and it was like a sneak peak of what was to come.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
Just how mean and cruel Edward was being to Bella

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
When Bella is saying it out loud what Edward said and it comes out You.... Don't ... Want ....Me.   Its so sad

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
I loved that Sam found her and that the wolf pack was there in her house but she didnt' realize who they were until later.

Were you surprised by Edward’s behavior in this chapter?
Yes i was....

Did you think he was going to break up with Bella?
Yes..i knew something like that would happen.. with the weird way he was acting a few days prior to the Break up.

What did you think of what he said to her when he broke up with her?
It was so emotional.  All i could think of was poor Bella and " No, this shouldn't be happening!" and " how could you be so mean Edward Cullen?" i can totally see how Bella wouldv'e thought she was not worthy anymore of Edward and that he didn't love her anymore.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?

Yeah..That Sam Uley rescued her... i didn't even see that coming...

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
Life, Love, meaning..... over.
that quote just sums up Bella in New Moon....

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
Well i've noticed this bit before but it never really meant much because i was still to emotional to even think about it.When edward asked Bella to do him a favor, " Don't do anything reckless or stupid," he ordered, no longer detached.... see, that was when i realized he still did love Bella.....Every storm has a silver lining.

Were you surprised by Edward’s behavior in this chapter?
Yes, I was very surprised.  Edward dosen't seem like the type to cop out like that. He promised that he would never leave her.

Did you think he was going to break up with Bella?
I did think so yes.  He was to distant.  Edward may seem perfect, but he is after all a guy.  Its what they do.

What did you think of what he said to her when he broke up with her?
   It broke my heart...

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?

What interested me the most was the changes of Jacobs personality.  Before he can change... he seemed more playful, more of a kid.  Then the change happens and he is more of a man.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
I guess the hardest thing for me to understand was how willingly the family was able to allow Edward to leave Bella the way he did.  And they just followed.  Did it never accur that Victoria would still want revenge, and with them gone Bella was easy game?

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
He smiled my favorite crooked smile, but it was wrong. It didn’t reach his eyes.Bella Swan, New Moon, Chapter 3, p.67

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
I like the reference to the title...New Moon.  I don't remember word for word..but when she is in the wood searching for the moon's light...

The New Moon is the darkest time during the moons cycle.
This book was the darkest time of Bellas life.

Were you surprised by Edward’s behavior in this chapter?
Yes - but only a little bit. My first thought about leaving Bella was: coward! But he promised not to leave her in Phoenix ... only as long as it's best for her

Did you think he was going to break up with Bella?
Yes - because he was acting so different ... so cold and distant

What did you think of what he said to her when he broke up with her?
That was so ... not right ... so mean ... him acting like an ice-block ... like a stranger - it really hurt me

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
That the Cullens allow Edward to leave her - they always told how glad they are he found her, and than they are leaving with him ... without telling her one word

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
Don't do anything reckless or stupid. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Edward Cullen

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
The first mentioning of the wolf-pack

Were you surprised by Edward’s behavior in this chapter?
Yes, I knew something was coming, but I had no idea it would be so huge.

Did you think he was going to break up with Bella?
No I really didn't. I didn't want to believe that he even could do it.

What did you think of what he said to her when he broke up with her?
I thought it was unnecessarily cruel. I felt Bella's pain, despair.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
Edward leaving a note for Charlie, the whole way Edward broke up with Bella - very shocking and hurtful.

I was also very surprised that Alice just left w/o speaking to Bella at all. I felt abandoned by the Cullens.

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter? The foreshadowing of the werewolves when Bella heard an animal near her.

Were you surprised by Edward’s behavior in this chapter?
No, Edward is pretty over dramatic and he’s still got the mind-set that he’s no good for Bella because he’s dangerous to her. I think he was just waiting for a reason to leave her “for her own good”. Also, it wasn’t strangers that he had to protect her against, this was his family and I think that made it even harder for him to forgive and forget.

Did you think he was going to break up with Bella?
I didn’t want to believe it, but I had a hunch that’s what was coming.

What did you think of what he said to her when he broke up with her?Heartbreaking. I think it was so pivotal and full of emotion, it is pure written perfection. I could feel Bella’s heart breaking into a million pieces and Edward’s distantness. Amazing, but so sad. I think I cried this whole book.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
Sam and Dr. Gerandy’s questions to Bella. They both meant the same thing, but they asked in two very different ways and as out of it as she was, Bella understood.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
How Bella just accepts that Edward doesn’t “want” her anymore. It’s like she knew that day was coming, the way she compares Edward to a god and he’s so perfect but she’s just some trite human that’s a dime a dozen and she thinks that’s why he’s leaving.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
“Love, life, meaning... over.” Bella pg. 73

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
I was a little shocked that Bella still defended Edward to Charlie when he asked if Edward had left her in the woods alone.

Before I answer these questions I must make something very clear: I am team Jacob. Before this chapter, I was team Edward, but this very chapter is the story of my conversion where I will FOREVER stay. Furthermore, the answers to the questions below are referring to when I was team Edward. Comprendo? :]

Were you surprised by Edward’s behavior in this chapter?
I don't actually remember being suprised, but once Bella started thinking about his actions and the way he kissed her like he would never see her again I was like, "yeah, something bad is going to happen."

Did you think he was going to break up with Bella?
I did have an idea that he was going to break up with her, just not so harshly and bluntly.

What did you think of what he said to her when he broke up with her?
Even being team Edward at the time, I thought he was being a real douche bag! It was unnecessary.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
Uhh, did I mention Edward was a douche bag? An ass hole? Yeah. I'd like to discuss that.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
I was suprised that Edward was the only one that said goodbye. That kind of ticked me off (along with a million other things). I mean, I thought Alice would bug the crap out of Edward until she got to say goodbye but, no. Nothing of the sort.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
"Change was coming. I could feel it."

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
I noticed how much self confidence Bella lacked. She compares her image to Edwards all the effing time and tells herself that she's so ugly and and plain while Eddie is all perfect and god-like. DUDE, half the book she is talking about looks. And it's super annoying. Quit putting yourself down before I jump in the book, and whoop your ass!

Welcome, Sarah!

I'm a die-hard Team Edward person, but I really would love to know what went on at the Cullens' house to know why no one, especially Alice, said goodbye to Bella.  I've always assumed that Alice and Jasper took off right after the incident to give Jasper some space to deal with things, but I am surprised that Alice didn't call her before Edward broke up. I imagine that Edward issued some kind of edict to the family, thinking that a "clean break" would make things easier for Bella and totally underestimating real human emotions.  Unanswered questions like this make me all the more desirous of an Edward POV for the entire Saga!

hey sarah  welcome2

I was really shocked that no one said goodbye. And what Edward did wasn't a goodbye either, it was cruel. As much as Alice and Esme had shown their affection for Bella, they all left without a word of goodbye. That really bothered me.

I was looking something else up and ran across this on page 72:

"Alice is gone?" My voice was blank with disbelief.
"She wanted to say goodbye, but I convinced her that a clean break would be better for you."

You know that wasn't a pleasant conversation between Edward and Alice!  What I wouldn't give for SM to write this from Edward's POV!!!

I totally agree!! I would LOVE to have her write his POV! But I guess we must settle for DSOTM, author Blondie! which isn't so bad ihmo  Cheesygrin

Also yes I think it was really odd that Alice never said goodbye, or put more of a fight up.

@Sarah, I understand how you transitioned to Team Jake after this chapter...
I did that more towards the middle, when he and Bella became close..
and let me tell you in Eclipse (the 3rd time reading it) I was to the point where I could punch Edward in his private parts..and turn my undying love to Jake..Edward was such an arse in beginning of the book..ugh!!

but alas I still love Edward..but I do love me so Jake  Winking

Doesn't Edward somewhere say something like "Alice looks at things differently, she's always living in both the present and the future"? (or is thiis from the film??  ImUndecided ) And since Edward ws constantly fighting the urge to go back to Forks and check on Bella, Alice would probably have seen them together if she had looked for their futures.. not that she was allowed. It sounds harsh, and not how we want to see her, but I think the decision to leave with Jasper right then without saying goodbye wasn't that hard. She knows who she can't live without..
And just like they would leave the decision of turning Bella to Edward (at least before he involved the volturi and what not..) they would leave any other decision concerning her to him, they might not agree with what he does, but they wont object too much.
