New Moon: Chapter 4: Waking Up By annaclaire321

Summary:

In Chapter 4, Waking Up, Bella slowly begins to resurface after Edward’s departure. She is confronted by Charlie who has watched her move through daily life in a daze, functioning but not participating. He is frightened for her and threatens to send her to live with her mother, but Bella protests and appeases him by offering to spend time with her classmates.

Bella chooses Jessica Stanley and convinces her to see a movie. It’s during this outing in Port Angeles that she sees a group of men who remind her of the would-be attackers she encountered on a similar street. In a trance, she walks to them, ignoring Jessica’s pleas to stop. She is stunned to hear Edward’s voice, pleading with her to walk away. She quickly realizes that Edward’s voice returns when she continues to approach the men, potentially putting herself in danger.  Bella revels in the hallucination, not wanting it to end.

Bella finally retreats from the men and joins a confused and annoyed Jessica. Back at home in her room that night, she finds that she has to confront her pain, no longer in the numb trance she has been used to. She goes to sleep for the first time not knowing what to expect in the morning.

Memorable Quotes:

Bella Swan:  “Time passes. Even when it seems impossible. Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise. It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me.” Pg 93

Charlie Swan: “I want you to be happy—no, not even that much. I just want you not to be miserable.” Pg 97

Bella Swan: “The scene kept cutting between the horrified face of the heroine, and the dead, emotionless face of her pursuer, back and forth as it closed the distance. And I realized which one resembled me the most.” Pg 106

Bella Swan:  “I sat down on the bench outside the theater door and tried very hard not to think of the irony. But it was ironic, all things considered, that, in the end, I would wind up as a zombie. I hadn’t seen that one coming.” Pg 106

Bella Swan:  “It was depressing to realize that I wasn’t the heroine anymore, that my story was over.” Pg 106

Bella Swan: “I saw no reason for fear. I couldn’t imagine anything in the world that there was left to be afraid of, not physically at least. One of the few advantages of losing everything.”  Pg 110

Jessica Stanley: “Are you crazy? Are you suicidal?” Pg 110

Bella Swan: “My muscles locked in place, froze me where I stood. Because it wasn’t Jessica’s voice that rebuked me now.  It was a furious voice, a familiar voice, a beautiful voice – soft like velvet even though it was irate.” Pg 111

Bella Swan: “In the instant I heard his voice, everything was very clear. Like my head had finally surfaced out of some dark pool.” Pg 111

Bella Swan: “The anger was what I wanted to hear—false, fabricated evidence that he cared, a dubious gift from my subconscious.” Pg 113

Bella Swan: “As much as I struggled not to think of him, I did not struggle to forget. I worried—late in the night, when the exhaustion of sleep deprivation broke down my defenses—that it was all slipping away. That my mind was a sieve, and I would someday not be able to remember the precise color of his eyes, the feel of his cool skin, or the texture of his voice. I could not think of them, but I must remember them. Because there was just one thing that I had to believe to be able to live—I had to know that he existed. That was all. Everything else I could endure. So long as he existed.” Pg 116

Bella Swan: “Forbidden to remember, terrified to forget; it was a hard line to walk.” Pg 117

Why do you think Bella chose Jessica for her night out?
Jessica is self-absorbed and Bella knew that she would want to talk about herself and she wouldn't have to face her own pain.  Jessica was a good distraction.

What did you think Bella was experiencing when she described hearing Edward’s voice?
I was hoping that Edward was somewhere nearby!  I also wondered if it was some sort of supernatural thing - she had some kind of telepathic abilities and they were connected somehow.  Since we're still early in the story, I won't go any further with a spoiler.   smileyface

What does Bella mean when she says that she has woken up?
She was beginning to see how she looked from the outside to others.  Simply going through the motions of daily life wasn't the same as living.  Hearing Edward's voice brought some life back into her and she wasn't going to get adrenaline rushes just going through the motions.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
Charlie tells Bella that she's not the first to go through "this kind of thing" and I can't help but wonder what Charlie was like when Renee left him and took Bella along with her.  I wonder how much he shut down and if he ever really came out of it and that's why he keeps his emotions in check the way that he does.

Is there anything about this chapter you were disappointed with?
Not really.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
Charlie's response when she came home.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
I sat down on the bench outside the theater door and tried very hard not to think of the irony.  But it was ironic, all things considered, that, in the end, I would wind up as a zombie.  I hadn't seen that one coming.

My reaction was hardly sane, though - I was grateful.  The sound of his voice was something that I'd feared I was losing, and so, more than anything else, I felt overwhelming gratitute that my unconscious mind had held onto that sound better than my conscious one had.

Forbidden to remember, terrified to forget; it was a hard line to walk.

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
I hadn't noticed that she lost interest in the guys outside the bar once she realized that they were probably nice, safe guys.

Why do you think Bella chose Jessica for her night out?
Because Jessica is easy ... she is talking much and Bella don't have to do much action

What did you think Bella was experiencing when she described hearing Edward’s voice?
First I thought he is near and can talk to her by mind - than I thought about she is going crazy - but at least I think it's some kind of true love that made her hear his voice ... her subconscious mind is telling her

What does Bella mean when she says that she has woken up?
She still cared so much about Charlie and she recognised how aweful she's looking and acting - that she has to go on living ... also it's hard.

Is there anything about this chapter you were disappointed with?
Jessica being so 'not nice' to Bella later - she pretends to be her friend and than she is acting that mean because Bella was walking to strangers

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
Charlie is still sad about Renee leaving him - and somehow he's telling it to Bella

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
Forbidden to remember, terrified to forget; it was a hard line to walk.
Bella Swan

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
Bella can't bluff Charlie about her inner live - and also he threaten Bella to go back to her mom he cares so much about her and he really loves his daughter

For distraction.

What did you think Bella was experiencing when she described hearing Edward’s voice?
OME! I hoped she and Edward were still linked somehow, in their minds. I knew it wasn't possible but I hoped.

What does Bella mean when she says that she has woken up?
She had been in a daze for quite a while. Waking up was becoming more conscious of herself and realizing the pain might never go away but she had to continue living her life. She knew she needed to at least function better because of Charlie. He was very concerned about her.

Is there anything about this chapter you were disappointed with?
Bella's directly heading for danger, like she had a death wish.
Charlie threatening to send Bella to Renee.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
Jessica is a bigger bitch than I thought.

Absolutely!  She and Lauren had more in common than we thought. I'm so thankful for the little bit of insight that Edward gives in the Midnight Sun draft - how he felt so protective of Bella because of Jessica's thoughts.

Why do you think Bella chose Jessica for her night out?

Because Jessica is self-absorbed and talks a lot and a good-distraction.

What did you think Bella was experiencing when she described hearing Edward’s voice?
I wasn’t sure what to think at first. I was hoping that Edward was nearby keeping an eye on her but staying completely out of sight.

What does Bella mean when she says that she has woken up?
That she finally sees what everyone else has been seeing. She’s just aimlessly going through the motions, doing everything that she has to but no more. She’s just a shell, she’s keeping herself from feeling anything at all.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
My heart breaks for Charlie. Here he is watching Bella going through this awful experience and there’s nothing he can do or say that can help her. At this point he’s threatening to send her to her mom’s, which I don’t think he really wants, just to try and help her .

Is there anything about this chapter you were disappointed with?
Not really. I could say I was disappointed with Jessica’s attitude, but I never liked her to begin with and always thought she was nasty.

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
The way Bella responded to Jessica asking her if she was suicidal. That’s really the first thing that she says that has some kind of feeling behind it, it’s like she was offended by Jessica even thinking that.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
“Time passes. Even when it seems impossible. Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise. It passes unevenly, in the strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me.” Bella pg. 93

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
Pg. 111 In the instant I heard his voice, everything was very clear. Like my head had suddenly surfaced out of some dark pool. I was more aware of everything- sight, sound, the feel of the cold air that I hadn’t noticed was blowing sharply against my face, the smells coming from the open bar door.   When Bella hears Edward’s “voice” she’s alive again. She’s aware of things that she’s otherwise been ignoring for the last few months.
