New Moon: Chapter 4: Waking Up By annaclaire321
Summary:
In Chapter 4, Waking Up, Bella slowly begins to resurface after Edward’s departure. She is confronted by Charlie who has watched her move through daily life in a daze, functioning but not participating. He is frightened for her and threatens to send her to live with her mother, but Bella protests and appeases him by offering to spend time with her classmates.
Bella chooses Jessica Stanley and convinces her to see a movie. It’s during this outing in Port Angeles that she sees a group of men who remind her of the would-be attackers she encountered on a similar street. In a trance, she walks to them, ignoring Jessica’s pleas to stop. She is stunned to hear Edward’s voice, pleading with her to walk away. She quickly realizes that Edward’s voice returns when she continues to approach the men, potentially putting herself in danger. Bella revels in the hallucination, not wanting it to end.
Bella finally retreats from the men and joins a confused and annoyed Jessica. Back at home in her room that night, she finds that she has to confront her pain, no longer in the numb trance she has been used to. She goes to sleep for the first time not knowing what to expect in the morning.

Memorable Quotes:
Bella Swan: “Time passes. Even when it seems impossible. Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise. It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me.” Pg 93
Charlie Swan: “I want you to be happy—no, not even that much. I just want you not to be miserable.” Pg 97
Bella Swan: “The scene kept cutting between the horrified face of the heroine, and the dead, emotionless face of her pursuer, back and forth as it closed the distance. And I realized which one resembled me the most.” Pg 106
Bella Swan: “I sat down on the bench outside the theater door and tried very hard not to think of the irony. But it was ironic, all things considered, that, in the end, I would wind up as a zombie. I hadn’t seen that one coming.” Pg 106
Bella Swan: “It was depressing to realize that I wasn’t the heroine anymore, that my story was over.” Pg 106
Bella Swan: “I saw no reason for fear. I couldn’t imagine anything in the world that there was left to be afraid of, not physically at least. One of the few advantages of losing everything.” Pg 110
Jessica Stanley: “Are you crazy? Are you suicidal?” Pg 110
Bella Swan: “My muscles locked in place, froze me where I stood. Because it wasn’t Jessica’s voice that rebuked me now. It was a furious voice, a familiar voice, a beautiful voice – soft like velvet even though it was irate.” Pg 111
Bella Swan: “In the instant I heard his voice, everything was very clear. Like my head had finally surfaced out of some dark pool.” Pg 111
Bella Swan: “The anger was what I wanted to hear—false, fabricated evidence that he cared, a dubious gift from my subconscious.” Pg 113
Bella Swan: “As much as I struggled not to think of him, I did not struggle to forget. I worried—late in the night, when the exhaustion of sleep deprivation broke down my defenses—that it was all slipping away. That my mind was a sieve, and I would someday not be able to remember the precise color of his eyes, the feel of his cool skin, or the texture of his voice. I could not think of them, but I must remember them. Because there was just one thing that I had to believe to be able to live—I had to know that he existed. That was all. Everything else I could endure. So long as he existed.” Pg 116
Bella Swan: “Forbidden to remember, terrified to forget; it was a hard line to walk.” Pg 117
