Chapter Six – FRIENDS By Claire

Chapter Six is titled Friends likely for two reasons: it introduces us to the beginning of Bella and Jacob’s friendship and we see Bella resurface with her friends at Forks High School.  In Chapter Five, Cheater, Bella claims two abandoned motorcycles in need of repair and enlists Jacob’s help in rebuilding them; another attempt at the recklessness she hopes will summon Edward’s voice in her mind.

What Bella does not expect is the pleasant distraction that Jacob’s friendship provides. For one evening - the first time in more than four months - she is able to sleep without dreaming or having nightmares.  She meets Jacob’s friends from LaPush, Quil and Embry, who playfully tease him about his new project with Bella.  During another visit to LaPush, Bella and Charlie join the Blacks and the Clearwaters for dinner.  Bella finds herself quietly immersed in the evening, even genuinely smiling at times.

Back at school, Bella sits with her classmates at lunch and tries to join them in conversation. After months of watching her in a near-zombie state, they are shocked by the attempt.  Some, like Lauren, are suspicious, but Mike and Angela welcome her back to the group warmly. It is during this lunch break that we learn about the mysterious large bear sightings that have occurred in unexpected areas near Forks.

Characters Involved:

Bella Swan, Jacob Black, Quil Ateara, Embry Call, Charlie Swan, Billy Black, Mike Newton, Jessica Stanley, Lauren Mallory, Angela Weber

Characters Mentioned:

Leah Clearwater, Sue Clearwater, Harry Clearwater

Memorable Quotes

Bella Swan:  I was going to be as reckless as I could possibly manage in Forks. I would not be the only keeper if an empty contract. Chapter 6, pg 147

Bella Swan: For the first time in more than four months, I’d slept without dreaming.  Dreaming or screaming.  I couldn’t tell which emotion was stronger – the relief or the shock.  Chapter 6, pg 142

Jacob Black: If either of you set so much as one toe on my land tomorrow… Chapter 6, pg 141

Bella Swan: The laughter did not go deep; it was light and superficial, but still nice. I was sure he wouldn’t notice the faint hint of hysteria. I wasn’t used to laughing, and it felt right and also very wrong at the same time. Chapter 6, pg 148

Bella Swan: I didn’t have to speak often, but I smiled a lot, and only because I felt like it.  I didn’t want to leave. Chapter 6, pg 150

Bella Swan: I was beginning to get annoyed with myself. I might as well have been packed in Styrofoam peanuts through the last semester.  Chapter 6, p.153

Angela Weber: “We think it was a bear.  It was black, anyway, but it seemed….too big.” Chapter 6, pg 155

Lauren Mallory: “Oh, joy. Bella’s back.”  Chapter 6, pg. 158

How do you feel about the effect that Jacob’s friendship has on Bella?  Did you feel her sense of trepidation as she started to feel better? I was really glad to see her coming out of her deep depression and realizing life must go on. I felt all her emotions strongly, it was like I was going through it with her.

What do you think about Bella’s goal to be as reckless as possible? Stupid

In this chapter we are introduced to Jacob’s friends, Quil and Embry.  What did you think of them? I didn't think much of Quil and Embry lol.

How do you feel about the effect that Jacob’s friendship has on Bella?  Did you feel her sense of trepidation as she started to feel better?
I was glad that she had a friend who could draw her out of her depression and make her feel better, but I was afraid of the friendship crossing the line.  I didn't want her to fall for anyone and complicate things if/when Edward came back.

What do you think about Bella’s goal to be as reckless as possible?
I completely understand why she wanted to do it.  She wanted to lash out and to be able to hear Edward's voice.

In this chapter we are introduced to Jacob’s friends, Quil and Embry.  What did you think of them?
I thought that they seemed like nice, typical teenage boys.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
Jessica's true colors really seem to come through with her nasty treatment of Bella.  It becomes more obvious that she used Bella to draw attention to herself and was never a real friend to her.  Angela, on the other hand, is such an angel.  She's the kind of friend that every girl needs to have.

Is there anything about this chapter you were disappointed with?
There's no Edward.   LOLsign

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
Bella's dream about Sam.  It's like she's remembering more about the night she got lost in the woods...how his shape seemed to "shiver and change".

What would you change about this chapter if you had a chance?
Nothing.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
I was going to be as reckless as I could possibly manage in Forks. I would not be the only keeper if an empty contract.

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
I had never noticed Quil's demeanor when he first met Bella - the impish smile and winking at her.  Funny!

I think it’s good for Bella to have Jacob as a friend. He’s different than her school friends, that weren’t really friends at all- except Angela, he didn’t have to witness that “zombie” period and she doesn’t have to pretend around him. I felt like she didn’t know what to think when she started to feel better. Like she had gotten so used to just existing that actually living again terrified her and she didn’t even know where to begin.

What do you think about Bella’s goal to be as reckless as possible?
I think it’s her way of coping. She needs that few seconds of Edward’s voice to know that her time with him wasn’t worthless and that he really does exist.

In this chapter we are introduced to Jacob’s friends, Quil and Embry. What did you think of them?
Normal teenage boys. I didn’t think too much of them at all really.

Is there something you noticed in this chapter that you'd like to discuss with the book club?
Bella laughs- for the first time in months she really lets go and laughs.

Is there anything about this chapter you were disappointed with?
Nope

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
Bella surprised me at lunch, with all the wishing and hoping last year that she could just fade away and not be noticed, it finally happens (grant you a year late) and she chooses to speak up, I found that weird. I’m glad she did, because I really like Angela and someone needed to stand up for her but I still thought it was strange of Bella to put herself in te spotlight again.

What would you change about this chapter if you had a chance?
I would just delete Jessica and Lauren from the book period. They’re so nasty.

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
“I wasn’t numb anymore. Tonight would, no doubt, be as horrific as last night.” Bella pg. 142

Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never
noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?

In Bella’s dream, Sam Uley was shivering and changing and didn’t offer to help her.

Oooooh....good catch!  I never noticed that.

I wonder if that was foreshadowing to Jacob changing soon and Jacob would be the one to help her.

Or...
Maybe it was because he helped her before because they thought that Edward had done something to her and it was to eliminate the vampire threat and since the
Cullens were gone, he had no reason  to help her.

Another thought...
Sam doesn't have any respect for Bella because of her association with the Cullens and has no desire to help her.
