Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Chapter 6: I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom
Written by Krystal

After getting used to Chiron being a horse, Percy explored Camp Half Blood with whispers and pointing in his direction. As they passed the volleyball court, Percy looked back at the farm house and movement in the attic window caught his attention. Chiron denied there was anyone up there, but Percy knew better than to believe him.

They walked through the strawberry fields, which paid for the camps expenses, and discussed Grover’s failure as a keeper. This was Grover’s second chance to prove himself and while Chiron believed he had done his job, it was up to the Council of Cloven Elders. Chiron had wanted Grover to wait before his next assignment, being small for his age, but here they were. Percy realized that Chiron had been avoiding the word death when it came to his mother and it dawns on him that if Mount Olympus was real then so is the Underworld. Chiron explains that souls do travel to the afterlife, but until they know more Percy should push it from his mind.

They continued on toward the forest and Chiron warns that if Percy goes in, go armed, which leads to the fact that Percy doesn’t have his own sword or shield for capture the flag Friday night. They continued on to the archery range, the canoeing lake, the stables, the javelin range, the sing-along amphitheater, and the arena and finally made it to the twelve cabins, all looking different to represent their patron god, and Chiron left Percy in Annabeth’s capable hands.

Annabeth lead Percy to cabin eleven where he met Luke and learned their patron was Hermes, god of travelers. This was the place Percy would stay until he was ‘determined’ and back outside Annabeth explained that one did not choose a cabin; they were placed there depending on who their Olympian parent was.  Percy tried to deny his father was a god, but Annabeth knew exactly what he’d been going through all his life with ADHD and dyslexia. He was a half-blood alright and so was the big girl who was now laughing at Percy.

Clarisse was the daughter of Ares, but worse than that, she was the camp bully. She grabbed Percy by the neck and dragged him to the bathroom and led his head toward the toilet water. It was at that moment when something incredible happened. The pipes began to rumble and the water shot out of the toilet bowl and over his head, hitting Clarisse in the face. The rest of the toilets exploded and attacked Clarisse and her friends as they felt the bathroom. The entire bathroom was flooded, even Annabeth hadn’t been spared, but Percy had managed to stay completely dry.

Memorable Quotes

Percy: I’d done pooper-scooper patrol in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade a few times, and, I’m sorry, I did not trust Chiron’s back end the way I trusted his front. (Page 75)

Chiron: “At any rate, Grover is a late bloomer, even by satyr standards, and not yet very accomplished at woodland magic. Alas, he was anxious to pursue his dream. Perhaps now he will find some other career…” (Page 78)

Chiron: “There is a place where spirits go after death. But for now…until we know more…I would urge you to put that out of your mind.” (Page 78)

Percy: Okay. So each cabin had a different god, like a mascot. Twelve cabins for the twelve Olympians. But why would some be empty? (Page 80-81)

Luke: “They don’t know what cabin to put you in, so you’re here. Cabin eleven takes all newcomers, all visitors. Naturally, we would. Hermes, our patron, is the god of travelers.” (Page 85)

Percy: I thought about setting that down, but then I remembered that Hermes was also the god of thieves. (Page 85)

Annabeth: “Percy Jackson,” Annabeth said, “meet Clarisse, Daughter of Ares.”
Percy: I blinked. “Like…the war god?” (Page 89)

Percy: “What?” I demanded. “What are you thinking?”
Annabeth: “I’m thinking,” she said, “that I want you on my team for capture the flag.” (Page 92)

Questions for consideration:

What do you think could be in the forest and how does it relate to capture the flag?

Why do you think that the majority of the cabins are empty and others are nearly full?

What do you think Clarisse was talking about when she said ‘Big Three’ material?

I'm not sure what could be in the forest, but I think a forest would be a great place for capture the flag!

I think who your parents are determines which cabin you get to stay in. I think that your parent has to be one of the bigger gods for you to stay in one of the nicer cabins.

What do you think Clarisse was talking about when she said ‘Big Three’ material?
I think she was talking about Percy being the son of one of the big three gods: Zeus, Hades, or Poseidon

Yea that's a given, but what I was wondering is why certain gods seem to have more children than others. There's plenty of kids at the camp, so why are cabin's empty. Do you think there is a reason why some of the gods don't have demigod children?

Okay that makes sense. I totally didn't get that.

Maybe the 'lesser' gods have more children for some reason...not really sure why.

Maybe it's not just the lesser Gods; someone like Artemis is unlikely to have children, as she was a virgin goddess (and still managed to be the goddess of childbirth, as well- funnily enough)

That only which we have within, can we see without. If we meet no Gods, it is because we harbor none. If there is a grandeur in you, you will find grandeur in porters and sweeps.

That is very interesting. I never knew that.

Maybe it also has something to do with lesser gods being able to get away with more when it comes to humans.
