Staar84: One quick one, is the book's font blue? Sometimes it looks blue to me. And why Minnesota?
Maggie Stiefvater: You think? I just was very perplexed. I have no problem with negative reviews -- no book can please everyone -- but it was like being told I hated wolves.
Staar84: Those are about Hsiver, I'm sorry.
Maggie Stiefvater: And yes, the font is blue!
Karin Perry: Stacey you are next
Staar84: Shiver.
aylah50: I loved the blue font!
Maggie Stiefvater: Because I thought Minnesota would make a great tax-deductible vacation spot? No, I%u2019m kidding (although my husband says, %u201CWhy couldn%u2019t you have set SHIVER in Bermuda or something?%u201D). I picked Minnesota because I wanted someplace in the U.S. that already had an existing wolf population, so I could slip my werewolves in unnoticed. Also, I wanted someplace where the difference between summer and winter was well-defined and dramatic, so any place in my home state (Virginia) was out. Also, I lived for a year in Wisconsin, and have relatives in Minnesota, so I didn%u2019t feel I was going completely out on a limb and writing about something totally alien to me.

Maggie Stiefvater: argh that's weird.
Maggie Stiefvater: pretend those are quotation marks
Maggie Stiefvater: I wrote it in word and then copied it over, and it wigged out. {-)
Karin Perry: Stacey, go
Stacey (secsec1): what are you currently reading and anything you're looking forward to coming out?
Karin Perry: Good question
Staar84: I went to college in North Dakota so I was very excited to see that. Like, hey I've been to Duluth! (sorry Stacey)
gypsy_soul: good question!
Karin Perry: aylah50 you are next
aylah50: :)
Maggie Stiefvater: I am currently reading SISTERS RED by my friend Jackson Pearce (it comes out next year)
Stacey (secsec1): and i also agree, i think so many people are putting in negative ideas into YA books right now and not really looking at the whole book when they make comments like that article did
Maggie Stiefvater: And . . . I just got the next book by Leif Enger
gypsy_soul: omg so jealous!
gypsy_soul: about jackson pearce lol
Maggie Stiefvater: he wrote PEACE LIKE A RIVER, which is so good that i want to marry it and have little atmospheric babies with it.
gypsy_soul: just read as you wish and loved it
ClockworkPrune: I need some writer friends. You author are always reading the books first and we fasn only get to get jealous...
Staar84: lol
Maggie Stiefvater: Jackson = very cool. All of you shoudl read AS YOU WISH and get ready for SISTERS RED. {-)
Xeque: lol!
Maggie Stiefvater: Jackson was using me to get books at hte last conference we went to.
gypsy_soul: as you wish was adorable, seriously.
Karin Perry: aylah 50, go
Maggie Stiefvater: She would drag me to booths and point to me and say "This is Maggie. She's on teh bestseller list. Give her a book."
aylah50: Thanks. wondered about the scene when James wrote down the words "thorn, ash, oak, red" and when that was going to play out to something, and wondered when he'd connect the name Thornking-Ash school to the Thorn King?
Stacey (secsec1): Jackson seems really cool!
aylah50: *Ooops - forgot the word "I" there at the beginning
aylah50: shame on me
aylah50: :P
Stacey (secsec1): LOL maggie!
gypsy_soul: oh goodness this reminds me i still have to read ballad
Maggie Stiefvater: Those are real bits of mythology to use against the dead, and James never did put them together, although Sullivan knew about them (remember wearing red to see the king of the dead?)
aylah50: Wow, just realized half that question got cut off -
Maggie Stiefvater: James has this habit of assembling the answers in front of him and then being blind to them.
Maggie Stiefvater: he did connect the name in teh end, finally. He thinks he's more clever than he really is, like a certain author who wrote him. coughcough {-)
aylah50: I just loved how important words were to both Sam and James - Sam with the lyrics in his head and James writing them on his arms.
Maggie Stiefvater: what was the rest of the question?
Karin Perry: MundieMom, go
Maggie Stiefvater: I am a word geek. I really think that words give things power, saying them out loud, etc., that makes a goal true.
MundieMomSophie: Some authors have mentioned that they look at trends when creating a story (i.e. faeries are trending "hot" ) do you?
Karin Perry: Oops...sorry
aylah50: (I'll email you the rest of the question)
Staar84: question
Maggie Stiefvater: OMG no. That would be a terrible idea! First of all, it takes 18 months for a novel to get published once it gets bought, so what if your trend has been suffocated by angry fans over that time period? You debut to a coffin. And SHIVER . . . if I'd paid attentions to trends, I'd have never written it. People told me werewolves were over and done with.
MundieMomSophie: LOL. Thought so but hey. I have heard it. Thanks for the confirmation.
Maggie Stiefvater: I think you write the best book you can, try not to be derivative, and if it's good, it sells. You could sell another vampire book, for instance, though the market is really done for them, if it was awesome beyond compare. So no, I ignore trends. {-)
Karin Perry: I'm sure there are some authors that do that though.
Maggie Stiefvater: Unfortunately, I know some who do, friends of mine.
Karin Perry: Staar84, go
Maggie Stiefvater: I don't think it's smart. I think you write about something because you love it, because you feel driven.
Staar84: Another Shiver question; was it hard switching between male and female viewpoints?
Maggie Stiefvater: It was actually really refreshing, because they both see different things. Grace moves the plot along and gets right to the point of things. Sam sees "oh the pretty! look at the birdies!" and wanders.
Staar84: lol
Maggie Stiefvater: So when I wanted to be contemplative, I chose Sam, when I wanted to finally get things moving, we picked Grace
Maggie Stiefvater: I didn't think of gender so much as I did with, say, Ballad, or with my Secret Novel I'm writing now.
Maggie Stiefvater: -)
Jessica Kennedy from x.x.x.38 left the chat 13 minutes ago
gypsy_soul: and again i say, awww sam :)
Maggie Stiefvater: hee!
Karin Perry: lisas, go
lisa s: please forgive me if this has been asked, but what made you think to always put the temperature in the new chapters? I loved that.
aylah50: oh yeah that was great!
Maggie Stiefvater: I have time for probably three more questions. just a warning!
Maggie Stiefvater: I actually originally had the date on the chapters.
Maggie Stiefvater: Like October 1, Monday
Karin Perry: Excellent. We said originally it would last an hour.
lisa s: nice extra touch :)
Maggie Stiefvater: But the thing is that the temperature is so important, and October 1 in MN is wildly different from, say, October 1 in Virginia
Maggie Stiefvater: It was too generic, so the temperature was a late addition. I'm glad it worked!
lauren_g: question
NinjaFanpire: Neat!
Maggie Stiefvater: oh, I keep forgetting -- {-)
Karin Perry: Kaila W, go
Maggie Stiefvater: my content smiley that means I'm done. heh.
Xeque: The temerature actually, for me, added a tiny element of suspense, not knowing how it would effect the wolves each chapter
Maggie Stiefvater: That was the hope!
gypsy_soul: yes i agree. brilliant little detail.
Kaila W.: Not to back track, but do you ever get annoyed with SHIVER being compared to say TWILIGHT? What YA book would you like to be compared to?
Karin Perry: lauren g, you are next
Maggie Stiefvater: thanks!
Maggie Stiefvater: Hm. I used to say, no, I don't mind it getting compared, the genre's the same, and I get the idea that people would compare.
Kaila W.: I actually heard an editor say in reference to an upcoming book "I want this to be our SHIVER."
Maggie Stiefvater: And then I go through periods of brief rage where I think PARANORMAL ROMANCE EXISTED BEFORE TWILIGHT, PEOPLE!!!
Kaila W.: SHIVER is now the standard. Of awesomeness. :)
Maggie Stiefvater: lol, Kaila, really1?
Maggie Stiefvater: and then I go back to thinking "Twilight is making YA hot. I'm cool with that. And other temperature related statements."
Staar84: lol
gypsy_soul: lol
aylah50: lol
Maggie Stiefvater: So I think I'm cool with it, as long as people don't start saying that they're the same -- because that does cheese me off. Twilight is very much about the danger of Edward hurting Bella.
ClockworkPrune: lol
Maggie Stiefvater: In Shiver, the danger is the weather. Sam is a lambikin and incapable of hurting anything but big scary Argentian dogs. }-)
Maggie Stiefvater: whoops, I got weird smiley in there. A Malfoy smiley.
gypsy_soul: aw sam
Karin Perry: lauren g, go
gypsy_soul: :)
aylah50: Malfoy - lol!
lisa s: lol
lauren_g: Are there any authors you can recommend to us while we wait for Linger? Author friends (excluding those already mentioned like Jackson) of yours or some you just love. I'm always looking for something new to read
Xeque: I honestly don't like relating books to other books...I like enjoying a book for what it is in its own. Although comparing real life events to books is another matter I'm guilty of.
Maggie Stiefvater: Hm. I really, really liked PEACE LIKE A RIVER. and THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES.
Maggie Stiefvater: It really depends on what you liked about SHIVER. If it was the tone, those two.
Maggie Stiefvater: If it was the paranormal aspect, MAGIC UNDER GLASS is coming out next month and I loved that.
Karin Perry: Are you going to be at NCTE and ALAN or just NCTE?
Maggie Stiefvater: i also liked LOVE IS THE HIGHER LAW. ooh, ooh, and LIPS TOUCH. Definitely, definitely LIPS TOUCH
Maggie Stiefvater: I will be at both!
ClockworkPrune: Oh, I can't wait for Magic Under Glass. It looks awesome. And the UK cover is so beautiful.
gypsy_soul: very excited about that one. and jealous of course that you have already read it!
MundieMomSophie: Oh yay. I have Magic Under Glass on pre-order!
Maggie Stiefvater: I'll be getting into town on Friday night, there all weekend, then Alan on Tuesday, I believe.
Karin Perry: Staar84, go and you are going to be our last question.
Staar84: I agree with xeque, I'm very protective of the way books make me feel, so I don't like comparing them to others.
Maggie Stiefvater: I get a lot of ARCs as an author.
Maggie Stiefvater: which is both good and bad, because if a friend asks me to read their book and I don't like it . . .
Karin Perry: Excellent. I'll be there Thurs - Tues.
lisa s: Lucky you!
Kaila W.: Speaking of ARCs. Will there be some for LINGER?
ClockworkPrune: I'm gonna be an author so I can get ARCs then }-)
Staar84: Can you give us any more details about Linger? That teaser nearly killed me Winking
gypsy_soul: still. the jealousy continues.
Maggie Stiefvater: And honestly, I am very picky and dislike more than I like. Oh, yay, Karin, so we can meet?
Karin Perry: I'd love to meet.
Maggie Stiefvater: I cannot say anything more about LINGER . . . I don't think. Oh, I get asked about Cole a lot.
Maggie Stiefvater: A lot a lot.
Maggie Stiefvater: Who is is, if Grace kisses him, if he's one of the wolves that Beck changed.
ClockworkPrune: Yes, about Cole and the naked thing... what is that about?
gypsy_soul: ah yes, the mysterious cole
Maggie Stiefvater: I will say this: Cole is one of the most difficult and challenging characters I have ever written.
Stacey (secsec1): lol, that was my big Q when i read that first paragraph!
Maggie Stiefvater: I am very, very happy with how he turned out.
gypsy_soul: oh my
Maggie Stiefvater: But I can't tell you more about him than that. And no, while as a werewolf, he spends way too much time without clothing, I wouldn't fret about his nekkidness. {-)
Karin Perry: I'll email you some specifics about my contact info so we can meet if you have time.
Maggie Stiefvater: Yes, Karin, definitely.
Staar84: I just wanted to say this too: I love the lines in Shiver about books. Grace%u2019s comment about reading outside making the book more real and Sam%u2019s at the beginning about %u201Cthe smell of unread words hung in the air%u201D
Staar84: sorry, this chat really doesn't like quotation marks, does it?
Maggie Stiefvater: *grin* thank you. Can you tell I lvoe bookstores?
Karin Perry: Excellent lyrical language in SHIVER for sure
aylah50: that line of Sam's!
Maggie Stiefvater: nope, it's grammar challenged.
aylah50: that was the line that made me shut the book in the book store and say yes, I'm definitely buying this
gypsy_soul: my heaven looks like a giant bookstore
Maggie Stiefvater: Thank you! And thanks guys for the great questions. THe time just shot by!
Staar84: me too
Karin Perry: Thanks so much!!
Maggie Stiefvater: Heaven is a library, silly gypsy.
lisa s: Thanks!
ClockworkPrune: I love all Sam's song. I'm trying to get my friend to record them, a fan-based band : )
Staar84: Thank you!
Maggie Stiefvater: Everything's free!
aylah50: Thanks Maggie!
gypsy_soul: lol true facts
MundieMomSophie: Thank you, Maggie!
Kaila W.: No, thank you Maggie. For giving us precious moments of your free time.
Maggie Stiefvater: That would be awesome Clockwork!
Maggie Stiefvater: Thanks, Kaila. :D
Maggie Stiefvater: G'night, all!
gypsy_soul: thank thank you maggie. i never tire of your amazing-ness
Karin Perry: Everyone, be sure to check in at openbooksociety.com for the Shiver book discussion.
