Episode 4: Darkness

Dr. Rush has been sitting at the main “computer” all night, working on some of the ships problems, drinking coffee and getting agitated. Finally he gets up, and finds some of the other crew members messing around with computer systems. They tell him Col. Young asked them to figure out some of the ships systems, and he tells them they have to turn them off, and keep them off. In the kitchen, a group (including Young, Eli, Scott, etc) meet to discuss supplies and eat their powder/water mixture breakfast. They want to loosen water restrictions so they can shower; Eli points out that the showers don’t use water, the spray a mist that works even better. Rush walks in just as the meeting ends. Dr. Rush explains to Col. Young that he has been up all night, concerned with the depleting energy reserves. To prove his point, the lights flicker, and Rush demands that Young order everyone to “stop pushing buttons”.

Meanwhile, Eli is trying to get everyone to record a message about themselves into the Kino. Through this we meet 2nd Lieutenant Vanessa James (the woman Scott was sleeping with in the pilot), Sgt. Spencer, Dr. Dale Volker (astrophysicist), Sgt. Hunter Riley, and Adam Brody (engineer). We also learn more about Scott, TJ, and Rush.

While Rush returns to work, the military personnel, scientists, and Camile meet to discuss whether Rush is telling the truth or if he’s just causing trouble. After, Camile tells Col. Young that they need to discuss Lt. Johansen, she resigned right before being trapped on The Destiny. Young replies that she has to remain active now, since they are cut off from Earth and she is the only medic. Elsewhere crew members discover a recharging plate: any object (they use flashlights) that is placed on the plate is recharged quickly. Young tells them to turn it off to save power.

Lt. Young and Sgt. Greer join Lt. Scott in one of the shuttles to try and figure out how to fly it. Eli and Chloe walk around and flirt, and Eli shows her how to run the shower.

Young checks in on Rush, and they fight about who’s actually in charge of decision making (Young wins). Rush tells him they may not have much energy left, possibly a few days or less.

Lt. James comes and grabs Eli (who is standing guard while Chloe showers) and tells him she needs to talk to him alone. Eli follows her into the dining area, where half of the crew is waiting. They demand to know what is really going on concerning power, rations, and whether or not they can get home because they believe that either Young or Rush would be honest with him and the crew wants answers. Eli promises that if they tell him anything, he will tell the rest of them.

Young sends one of the astrophysicists, Volker, to help Rush; Rush tells him Eli would have been more useful. Rush snaps and tells him they are very close to losing power. Volker responds that the ships been flying for millions of years and there’s no reason for it to lose power now. Rush explains that now that they are onboard and turning things on, they’ve drained the power. Rush snaps and throws him out. Volker goes back to Young, who decides to drag him back to Rush, when they lose power. The Destiny comes out of FTL (faster than light) and begins to drift. When Young finds Rush, he tells him the FTL was the last system to shut down, and there are no emergency reserves.

The crew is running around the dark ship, looking for answers, and Eli returns to Chloe, who is stuck in the dark shower. He gives her the Kino control to use a light. Rush is yelling at Young about the system failure (and that he isn’t responsible), and he collapses. Young calls TJ to help.

Young Eli, Brody, and Volker discuss what systems are still up: life support, and shields covering the hull breaches. Eli suggests integrating shuttle power to the ship, which they start working on. Young tells Eli he will be gone, using the communication stones to report the situation. He trades places with Col. Telford at the Pentagon. Telford talks to Sgt. Riley, who explains that Rush has had a nervous breakdown and is unconscious.

At the Pentagon, Young reports the situation, and after requests to see his wife. She is waiting for him when he arrives, but she isn’t happy to see him.

Riley takes Telford to Lt. Scott, who is working with Johansen and Greer in the shuttle. Telford asks how Young let the situation fall apart so quickly.

Young explains the situation to his wife, that he is borrowing Telford’s body, and that he is on the other side of the universe. He tells her that he didn’t chose his job over her, and that he loves her. She doesn’t respond, and he begins to leave. She comes to ask what this changes, and that his being there means he isn’t coming back.

Back on Destiny, Young is arguing with Telford. Telford tells him he gave a direct order, and Scott is in the middle of explaining that the ship stopped for a reason when Young returns. Scott informs Young that Telford ordered Scott to use the communication stones to report that Young needed to be replaced. Young asks why the ship stopped where it did. It has entered a solar system, much like ours, and the odds of that happening randomly are astronomical.

Rush finally comes to, where TJ (Lt. Johansen) explains that he’s been out for 10 hours. He tells her he is embarrassed at his behavior, and she tells him it was a result of sleep deprivation and caffeine withdrawals and he’s not the only one; the smokers are even worse. TJ tells him that Young wants to see him. In the shuttle, Scott and Young explain that they are using the shuttle’s engine (and a nearby gas giant) to sling-shot into the inner system, where there are potentially habitable planets. The pass through the upper layers of the planet’s (which looks like Neptune) atmosphere, causing turbulence, but little else. Rush explains that the trajectory changed more than they planned, and that they are now headed for the sun in the center of the solar system.
