As promised OBS member Firebrand has brought us the weekly R&R of ‘Supernatural’
Supernatural Update
Okay, so we left off at the end of Season 4 with Sam and Dean facing down Lucifer as he rose and emerged back into the world.
Okay, wow..... where to start?
If Yikes, Oh My God, Boo-yah and WTF got together one night to create an episode of Supernatural... this would have been it.
This Week We catch up with Sam and Dean immediately following Lucifer's release. They trapped and it looks like they're going to bite it. And suddenly, we see Dean and Sam on a plane, whisked away by some unknown force, out of harms way.
Dean and Sam head off to find the angel Castiel. Throughout Season 4 he was an aide and ally, now we learn that he's dead, blown apart by an Archangel. The same archangel that's been protecting "Carver Edlund". The Winchester brothers have their very own profit, Chuck Shirley (who writes under the pseudonym Carver Edlund), who's been recording their story (the Gospel of Sam and Dean) for years. Chuck tells them that the angels are coming for them and when Zacariah (Castiel's boss) and his henchmen arrive Dean, after a very pointed "meeting of the minds", pretty much tells them he's through being their puppet and vanquishes them. It doesn't kill them but sends them far away.
The next scene finds Dean and Sam in their motel room (The exterior scenes were actually filmed behind the building where I work) and Sam and Dean have an uncomfortable conversation regarding the situation they now find themselves in. Sam apologizes for ushering in the apocalypse, Dean tell.s him it's not anything to talk about, and we begin to see that the Winchester brothers aren't exactly as they were. We also discover that the addiction Sam had for demon blood seems to have been completely wiped away.
Suddenly we meet Nick. He's being haunted by the ghost of his slain family. These ghosts keep telling him he's chosen. But chosen for what? He's been hallucinating and seeing disturbing images. Whatever he's been chosen for, whatever his purpose is, it's big and it's bad.
Becky is one of the small underground following of people who read Carver Edlunds "fictional" novels about the Winchester boys. She's a web mistress for a Supernatural fan fiction site, and while she's obviously a Sam fan, her stories tend to be more questionable ("then Sam touched, no, caressed Dean's clavicle" ?!?) and as she continues to write her new story she gets interrupted by an Internet phone call from Chuck. He's being watched by the angels and needs Becky's help to get a message to the brothers. She is slightly put off, these are supposed to be fictional right?, but after he tells her the truth she's on board. Anything to see Sam. Chuck sends her to the motel where the boys are holed up in hiding. With the help of a little black magic, Sam and Dean have made themselves invisible to any demon or angel who might be searching them out. But Chuck knows, and Becky shows up at their room to relay the message. She also gets a little touchy feel with Sam's admittedly Delicious pecs but she kinda sniffs at Dean, claiming he is not what she "pictured". The message is about the Michael sword. In biblical mythology Michael was a warrior archangel, the one who finally smites Lucifer and cast him to hell, all with the help of his sword. The most powerful weapon in the universe, so it seems. Her hero worship is slightly hilarious with Sam eventually having to draw a line ("Becky, uh, can you quit touching me?" to which she replies "No")
Dean contacts Bobby Singer, looking for help and maybe a little bit of back up in the situation with Sam. All the knowledge they know has been gleaned form what their father and Bobby knew. If anyone could help clean up the mess Sam had made it was Bobby Singer. As they debate their next move Sam tells Bobby about how killing Lilith was the final straw and when he did that, Sam ushered in the return of Lucifer. Bobby reacts violently, telling Sam that this is not something that can be forgiven and tells Sam he's to lose Bobby's number. This is, of course, assuming they make it out of this alive. Sam interprets this as deserved and wanders off to do some research in an abandoned church.
Dean and Bobby try to decipher the whereabouts of Michael's sword and Bobby laments the fact they tried to save Sam, as opposed to kill him, as was prophesied. Huh? What? That's not like Bobby. He was always like a father to the boys. Dean doesn't want to hash that argument out again and actually figures out the clue, only to be thrown across the room by Bobby, who has been possessed by a demon (I knew he would never be so callous!) and he is joined by a merry band of demons, including Meg, whom we last saw in Season 1... well, officially. They take Dean to the cleaner, Sam too when he arrives, but luck is on their side. Bobby, the real Bobby, is still inside his mind somewhere and managed to kill the demon possessing him by stabbing himself with the enchanted knife. The tide turns and Meg flees, leaving her body in the motel room.
Dean and Sam take Bobby to the hospital, he stabbed himself pretty good, and then head off to retrieve the Michael sword. Meg has a fair bit of time on them and Dean is worried she'll make it to the swords hiding place before they can stop her. Once there, Sam and Dean and set upon by Zacariah. He thanks the boys for leading him to the sword, he would never have found it otherwise. Dean is his usual self ("Oh thank God, the angels are here" :P) and is stopped in his tracks with one sentence. Zacariah tells Dean that the Michael sword does indeed exist but in a different medium that the Winchester's thought. What does this mean exactly? It means, DEAN is the "Michael Sword"... (All I can say is a guy that H.O.T has to be a weapon) and Dean is ordained to be the archangel Michael's vessel. Michael needs a body in order to confront Lucifer, who's about to find his body. The catch is, Michael can not take possession unless Dean says it's okay. Dean says, as politely as Dean can be, No. Zacariah breaks Sam's legs... Dean says No. Zacariah infects Dean with stomach cancer and will save him... Dean says No. Zacariah removes Sam's lungs. Dean says No.
All of a sudden, Castiel shows up. He's been reborn.. Can angels be reborn? Castiel hints that there is a force working that none of them can control. Someone who can return a murdered angel to glory, and someone who reached in when it looked like our heroes were done for and transported them to safety. Zacariah leaves reluctantly, because despite his methods, he is right and Lucifer needs to be challenged. Castiel tells the boys it's only a matter of time before Lucifer take control of his vessel and they will have nowhere to hide. He carves glyphs into the ribs of Sam and Dean, symbols that will protect them from Lucifer's sight and keep them from harm, so long as possible. The Castiel disappears. He does that a lot.
And we're back to Nick again. He is awoken from a dream by his dead wife. It's not his wife, but Lucifer. Nick of course finds it hard to believe and Lucifer has to convince him that Nick is a vessel. Lucifer can not enter without permission, as Michael can't, and it takes very little to sway Nick. His wife and son were killed by a home invader ("butchered in their beds") and Lucifer uses this to his advantage. "What kind of God would let that happen Nick?"."What kind of merciful God treats us like playthings?" Nick wants his family back but that is beyond Lucifer's powers. But if Nick agrees Lucifer vows to avenge him. With slight hesitation, Nick agrees and all we see is a bright light in the window. Lucifer has his vessel.
Dean and Sam have come back to the hospital for Bobby. It appears he may not heal 100%... "unlikely to walk again" is how the orderly puts it. But that doesn't stop Dean from rallying the troupes and convincing Sam and Bobby that no matter what it takes, with the help of his "G.E.D and give-'em-hell attitude", they'll stop Lucifer. As he leaves, Bobby calls to Sam to let him know that despite how Sam screwed up he would never be shut out by Bobby, and that it was the demon who told Sam to lose Bobby's number. Bobby is obviously troubled by Sam's fall from grace and the brothers leave.
Once in the parking lot Dean admits that what he said in Bobby's hospital room was all posturing and words. Dean is so completely devastated by Sam's betrayal. He can not forgive Sam, he can't trust him. Dean even goes so far as to say he doesn't think he and Sam can ever "be what [they] were" and that's where it ends. Sam is alone both literally and emotionally, knowing that he chose a demon over his brother. Sam also knows that nothing can be done to fix his relationship with Dean, except maybe time.
So what now? How can Sam and Dean function when they are at odds with each other? Dean's strength comes from the love he has for his brother and a true desire to do well. How can he function when, for the first time, he's completely alone?
Now that I am aware of the cast and characters we'll meet this season, I will be doing a character index in the next couple days, it's mostly done I just need to update and add a few. See you guys next week!
The first real sign that Dean and Sam do not have enough between them to keep their camaraderie strong. Dean even said he didn't think he trusted Sam anymore.
