Chapter 19
Characters:

Chloe heads outside to speak with Simon as they planned after helping Rae with the dishes. Simon and Chloe discuss the fact that Derek believes Chloe may be a necromancer since Chloe is seeing ghosts and hearing them. The ghosts are stuck in limbo and can sense when a necromancer is near by. Being a necromancer is hereditary. Chloe still doesn’t understand. Simon murmurs something and the basketball he’s holding starts to levitate. He thinks Chloe thinks he’s playing a tick on him so he shows her again, letting her pass her hand underneath the ball to see it’s actually floating in the air, then grabs her hand. Tori comes outside, meaning to spend some alone time with Simon when she finds Chloe and Simon still holding hands. Chloe attempts to excuse herself and Simon makes up the excuse of snack time and runs into the house. Later that night, Chloe has trouble sleeping as she finally accepts the fact that she is a necromancer. But she realizes she has more questions than answers. She falls asleep but is woken up by a harsh whisper telling her to get up. Chloe gets out of bed, believing it’s a ghost calling to her. She sees a pale shaper near a closed door. She takes a deep breath and steps inside.

Chapter 20

Ghost in attic
Chloe heads up the attic but can barely see her own hand even with the light filtering in from the small window. A voice calls out to her again and she realizes it’s the same ghost from the basement. For a moment, Chloe is scared but remembers the ghost can’t hurt her. She was the one with the power. She asks what the ghost wants but he can’t really get through to her, he’s blocked. Chloe thinks it may be the meds she’s been forced to take. The ghost tells Chloe to go down to the basement but Chloe refuses, she tells him if he wants to talk to her, he can wait until tomorrow when the meds wear off and go up to her room. The ghost doesn’t respond so Chloe turns around to head upstairs and someone calls out her name. She knocks her knee into something and sneezes from dust going up her nose. The voice belongs to Liz. Liz wonders what they are doing in the attic then remembers they were supposed to do a séance. Chloe realizes Liz has no idea that she is dead. Mrs. Talbot shows up along with Tori. Chloe tries to pretend she thought she heard a rat but Tori is sure Chloe saw a ghost. Mrs. Talbot makes Chloe take a sleeping pill. Rae is upset with Chloe for not admitting she can see ghosts or telling her she had looked up information on the janitor. Chloe tries to talk to her but Rae turns her back to her and goes to sleep. Chloe tries to get out of bed to find info on Liz but falls right to sleep because of the pill.

Chapter 21

The next day Chloe is called into Dr. Gill’s office and tries to pass the events of the night before as her sleepwalking and dreaming about ghosts but Dr. Gill’s and Dr. Davidoff don’t believe her. Aunt Lauren is in the meeting as well but Chloe can see the disappointment in her face. Dr. Gill and Dr. Davidoff want Chloe to go back on her meds and begin providing urine samples. They tell Chloe it’s to make sure they are giving her the proper dosage. Aunt Lauren tries to protest but Dr. Davidoff doesn’t allow her to. Chloe knows the real reason they want urine samples is to make sure she is actually taking the pills. Chloe winds up on lunch duty since she missed her morning classes. Derek interrupts her and grabs to roles of bread. He tells Chloe if she wants to talk to Simon, she doesn’t need to do it behind his back. Chloe tries to set him straight but Derek interrupts her again and tells her to meet him in his room at right. He tells Chloe to give the excuse that she’ll be with him for math tutoring. Simon will also be there. Chloe points out that the boys’ side is off limits. Derek tells her to tell Mrs. Talbot she’s going to his room for math and not to say anything to Van Dop. Mrs. Talbot won’t question them.

Chapter 22

The next day, Rae spends most of the day ignoring Chloe. After dinner, Chloe follows Rae into the kitchen and asks Rae to help show her own to use the machine since it’s her turn to do laundry and she wants to talk to her. Rae agrees. Chloe tells her about seeing ghosts and the ghost in the locked basement. Rae decides they need to investigate what’s behind the basement door. She tries using a credit card but the card only manages to break in half. Rae muses someone really wants to keep them out of that room and tells Chloe they’re going to need the key. Chloe volunteers to go get it. She walks into the kitchen and finds Derek rummaging through the fruit basket. She tries to sneak up on him but Derek tells her she won’t find the key she is looking for on the ring. He opens pulls out another set of rings from behind the fridge and hands them to Chloe as walks past her to the kitchen door. Rae finds the right key and opens the door, revealing a closet so small they could barely fit in. Rae tells Chloe to trying contact the ghost since she’s feeling so anxious, she thinks that means Chloe is sensing a ghost. Chloe tries and after a few seconds she gets a flash of a man dressed in a gray suit. Chloe closes her eyes, concentrating harder, and knocks her elbow into the door, knocking it against the wall. A metallic clank sounds and Chloe finds a metal ladder fastened to the wall. The ladder leading up a few steps to a small wooden door. Chloe steps onto the ladder and swings the door open. She tells Rae it’s a crawl space. Rae tells her to wait before she goes up since it’s so dark and leaves to find a flashlight.

Chapter 23

Rae
Rae returns with the flashlight, having hid it in her bra and Chloe shines it into the crawl space. The light bounces off a metal box. Chloe climbs the last two steps and into the crawl space. Rae climbs up the stairs and peers in as Chloe crawls to the box. Chloe tries to open it but the lid gets stuck on a piece of paper. Chloe pulls on the paper and manages to get the lid unstuck. The box is filled with what looks to be files. Chloe pulls out a folder marked 2002 and sees it says property taxes. The rest of the papers are just records and Chloe concludes the box is a fireproof box. Rae thinks the ghost was trying to tell her about something else. Chloe crawls around the crawl space but doesn’t find anything else. She wants to head back down because she is freezing but Rae tells her she isn’t cold. Rae crawls into the crawl space and sees Chloe is also sweating and her eyes are glittering like she has a fever. Chloe isn’t sure if there’s a ghost but she doesn’t want to find out. Rae hands her the flashlight and tells her to lead the way out. The flashlight goes out and Rae lights a match to give them light. Mrs. Talbot calls out to them and asks if they’re homework is done. Chloe remembers she was supposed to meet Simon and Derek and quickly crawls out of the crawlspace.

Chapter 24

Chloe heads to Simon and Derek’s room. Derek tells them to start without him while he goes to take a shower. Chloe sits down on the bed and opens her book to pretend they really are studying in case someone comes to check on them. She knocks down the binder Derek had been writing in and sees Derek is working on College Algebra with Trigonometry. Chloe thought Derek was in the tenth grade but Simon tells her Derek is but when it comes to algebra, geometry, chemistry, physics, and biology he was advanced. Simon asks if Tori had given Chloe a hard time about the other night they were caught holding hands but Chloe assures him she didn’t. Simon has told Tori he isn’t interested in her but she won’t budge. After some talk about classes, Simon and Chloe start to talk about the different supernaturals there are: necromancers, sorcerers, witches (which are girl spell casters), shamans (who can heal and astral project) and half-demons. Chloe asks if Derek is a half-demon but Simon says there isn’t an exact name for what Derek is. Their dad is a sorcerer as well. There is a network of supernaturals and Simon’s dad use to be apart of them but not anymore. He doesn’t elaborate as to why. He just tells Chloe his dad is a lawyer and he use to work for a research company of supernatural doctors and scientists who were trying to make things easier for other supernaturals. That’s how Simon and his dad got Derek. Derek’s type if very rare and he had been abandoned as a baby. Their dad didn’t like Derek being raised in a hospital type environment so he took Derek to live with them. Derek gets out of the shower and joins them. Chloe wonders why ghosts want with her. Derek believes they want to talk to her because they want help. Chloe informs them she can’t talk to the ghosts because of the pills. Derek says he’ll figure out a plan to get her off the pills without Dr. Gill and Dr. Davidoff noticing but Chloe needs to learn more about her powers and talking to ghosts is the only way. Mrs. Talbot calls from the stairs for them to head downstairs for snack time. Before they head down, Chloe asks Derek what he had overheard about Dr. Davidoff and Dr. Gill’s conversation from earlier that morning after she had left, Derek tell her Chloe they were talking about her and whether the right place for her to be was Lyle House.

Chapter 25

When it’s time for everyone to go to bed, Chloe asks Mrs. Talbot if she could call Liz. Mrs. Talbot tells her maybe during the weekend since Liz isn’t adjusting so well to the new place she is in. Rae asks what’s wrong and Mrs. Talbot tells them Liz is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder but maybe by next week they’ll be able to speak with her. Chloe doesn’t believe her. She doesn’t want to believe Liz is dead and thinks Liz may be just astral projecting or using poltergeist powers but she isn’t sure. After class, Derek pulls Chloe aside and over to the base of the boy’s staircase, handing her an empty Mason jar. He tells Chloe to pee in it and save her pee, she can use it for when she gets tested. Chloe isn’t exactly thrilled at the idea and Derek just gets exasperated with her.

Chapter 26

Mrs. Talbot informs everyone that they need to stay within the media room because Tori is having a very important meeting with her mother and Dr. Davidoff. The girls are allowed upstairs but the boys aren’t since to get to their stairway they have to head right passed the conference room door. Chloe heads up to her room, sneaks into Mrs. Talbot’s room, goes through Van Dop’s room and runs down the boys stairs to find out what’s going on with Tori. She overhears Tori and her mother arguing. Tori’s mom is horrible to her and scolds her for trying to get with Simon. Tori’s mother tells her to forget about Simon and stay away from him or she’ll make Simon winds up transferred. Later that afternoon, Mrs. Talbot informs everyone they will be getting a chance to get out and will be going to indoor community pool. Chloe decides to stay behind since she doesn’t have a bathing suit. Derek stays behind because he has a therapy session with Dr. Gill and also, because he isn’t allowed at outings. Chloe is laying on her bed listening to music when Tori stops by. She wants to declare a truce between her and Chloe. She tells Chloe she can have Simon and all she asks is for Chloe to tell Dr. Gill that she apologized. Tori then tells Chloe as part two of their truce, she will show her something in the crawl space. She had heard Chloe and Rae looking for something when she had gone downstairs to the laundry to see if her jeans were finally getting washed. Chloe tries to deny it but Tori just waves her off. She asks Chloe is Brady had told Rae about something being in the crawl space. Chloe remains quiet and nods, not knowing what Tori was talking about. Tori tells her there’s a jewelry box in the crawl space, she can show it to her.

Chapter 27
Characters:

Chloe and Tori crawl into the crawlspace. Tori tells Chloe to head to the left, the jewelry box is about halfway up the wall. After about twenty feet, Tori asks Chloe is she sees the pillar and to look right behind it. Chloe crawls to the pillar and starts feeling around the base of it when Tori reaches for Chloe’s arm, her hand wrapping around Chloe’s forearm and yanks Chloe off balance. Chloe tries to move back but Tori just knees her in the stomach. She accuses Chloe of ruining her life and smacks the back of Chloe’s head with a rock. Chloe falls unconscious. Chloe wakes up a few times but falls back to being unconscious. After a while she finally manages to gain her consciousness back and realizes her hands are tied behind her back with tape as well as her legs. Tape has also been placed over her mouth. Chloe flips onto her back and uses her hands to push herself up, managing to get onto her knees. A man’s voice calls out Chloe’s name. Chloe freaks out and shifts forward, smacking her nose into the post. She lowers her head from the pain and ends up smacking her skull into the post then topples sideways. The ghost tells Chloe to calm down and try summoning him to help her. Chloe tries to concentrate hard but the ghost yells at her to stop concentrating so hard then his voice disappears. Chloe decides to try to find the door. She crawls toward a bit of light she can see when the ground underneath her trembles and pitches her forward. The bindings around her hands loosen and Chloe free her hands. As Chloe moves to untie her legs, the ground underneath her trembles harder. Chloe thinks it’s an earthquake until she hears a thumping sound followed by a guttural sound. She tries harder to free her feet and something rattles right beside her. Icy fingertips brush Chloe’s bare arm. Chloe fells something wet trickle down her leg. She sits there frozen, too terrified to move. Dry, long and cold fingers trickle down Chloe’s neck. A voice calls out asking for help and Chloe lunges herself forward. She winds up face first in the floor then pushes herself up on all fours, moving as fast as she could to the door. Chloe gets to the door and pushes but the door is locked. She starts slamming her fists against the door and screaming for help as cold fingers wrap around her bare ankle.
