OBS RECAP & REVIEW: V – S1:E2 “THERE IS NO NORMAL ANYMORE” - by Rose
RECAP
Erica and Father Jack are sitting by the river, discussing the need to start a resistance, as a spaceship flies overhead to the building where the secret meeting was held. Erica realizes they are cleaning up after the raid. Father Jack goes to make a phone call to the police on his cell phone but Erica maintains it must be anonymous. She calls the police from a pay phone. The aliens have intercepted the call and try to keep her on the phone. Father Jack notices one of the sphere probes above them and tells Erica to hang up her call. The probe begins to follow them as they try to get away and Erica destroys it. Erica tells Father Jack her partner of seven years is a visitor and that anyone could be one. She informs Jack to go home while she figures out how what to do for they have to be discreet and tells him not to trust anyone.
Back at her house, Erica runs upstairs to check on Tyler and hears a crash. It turns out to be Tyler who when asked, lies about where he was all night. She tells him it is important not to have anything to have contact with the visitors and makes him promise he will not. When Tyler reaches his room, it an entirely different story. He takes out and hides his V uniform under his mattress.
At the church, Father Jack walks in to find his superior watching a news story on how the Visitors will be gaining full border access to the United States as early as that day. He tells Father Jack this is a good thing while Jack stares in astonishment. Jack is informed that the police came by the church to look for him in regards to the man that was stabbed the other day and they would return to question him.
When Erica is done taking a shower, she pulls back the shower curtain to reveal her partner, Dale, holding Tyler at gunpoint. Dale says to Erica that she left her gun in his car and Dale shoots her, which snaps her out of her daydream. She gets a call from her office asking her whether she has seen Dale. She is required to go into the office because Dale is now considered missing.
Ryan is lying in bed, when Val asks how his arm is healing. He says it’s okay and he goes to the bathroom. He uncovers his arm and stares at his wound.
Chad is sitting at his desk looking over a tape of his interview with Anna. A co-worker tells him to stop beating himself up over not being able to ask Anna the questions he wanted. She remarks how 80 million viewers tuned in for the interview.
----------- On the mothership Anna is looking at a visual screen in front of her. She flips the screen to show herself in a cocktail dress, then a fancy red dress. Her number two comes over to her and says that they have not heard anything yet about their border access visa. Anna reminds him that the United States is the catalyst and once the U.S agrees, all countries will follow suit. Still flipping through clothing options on the visual projection in front of her and stops on a kimono. She informs him that the kimono attire shows respect and submission. He reminds her that this is not the message she wants to send. She tells him he still does not understand humanity.
At church, special agent Malik approaches Father Jack from FBI Visitor Threat Assessment Joint Task Force. She questions him about the man who was stabbed and informs him the man made dozens of phone calls over the course of the years about alien invasion, which is why the FBI was involved.
Simultaneously, while Father Jack is being questioned, across town at FBI headquarters, Erica walks around eyeing everyone as suspect. She walks into the conference room with about ten agents and sits down for questioning. After a few lines of questioning it is announces that Dale’s car has been found.
The agents arrive at 4400 Pier Avenue, the site of the secret meeting the night before. Erica mentions that this address came up in an investigation of a terrorist cell to her boss. Erica swiftly makes her way over and into Dale’s car and retrieves her badge and gun from his glove compartment.
Projected over the skies of Japan, Anna, dressed in a kimono is broadcasting in Japanese, thanking the citizens for establishing diplomatic ties with them. The same broadcast is seen over Mexico then on national television in the US, with Anna wearing a black dress. Chad eyes the broadcast with a sort of contempt and distain. His co-worker shows him the current poll on how the public views the Visitors. Fifty percent were still undecided. Chad blames himself for not asking the right questions. His co-workers questions whether Chad will call Anna for another interview, but he says has something else up his sleeve.
------------ Ryan is getting ready for work when Val gives him the engagement ring back and says she rather him give it to her when he is ready. She asks if he’d like to do lunch but he tells her he has a meeting in New Jersey.
While walking into a Healing Center, Tyler tells Brandon to remain mum about him joining the Visitors Peace Ambassadors to his mother. Lisa greets Tyler all perky and smiles, and tells Brandon she will try to get him in front of the line to join as well.
Father Jack sitting in the pews at church, and is torn with that fact he never mentioned to the FBI that the man was raving about the visitors. His superior tells him the man was clearly disturbed. He tells Jack to tread carefully and he assures him he did the right thing.
At the 4400 building warehouse, Erica and the FBI agents are canvassing over the place for clues. Erica’s boss questions her about why he never heard about this warehouse before. She explains they thought there was mole and Dale must have come to the warehouse to investigate. Her boss asks why he would do such a thing alone and then asks if Dale trusted her. Having had enough of the snippy questioning Erica fires back how her partner is missing and she doesn’t appreciate his tone.
Anna’s number two and a subordinate are looking at video scroll snapshots of the people who were at the secret meeting the night before. Erica is one of people in the snapshot. He asks the subordinate if any of the people were part of the first resistance. The subordinate tells him they will get answer they need from a hostage they captured from the warehouse, who is currently strapped to a white table. Looking at man, we see nothing, no straps holding him down. The interrogator tells the hostage he will make the snakes go away if he answers the questions posed to him. The Visitors are performing some sort of mind control on the man to make him see a horde of snakes on his body.
Ryan walks into Al’s Garage, a mechanic shop, looking for an Angelo Russo. The mechanic tells him he has never heard of such a man. Not believing him, Ryan pulls the guy from under the car who happens to be Angelo Russo.
At FBI headquarters, Erica walks in to find Father Jack seated and waiting. She walks up to him and he is shocked she is an FBI agent and she is shocked he is a priest. The special agent, Malik, who questioned him earlier, comes over to tell him they are ready for him. Father Jack tells Erica is upsetting the apple cart when she asks what he is doing there. Erica asks Malik what the priest was doing here and she says he has information about a murder.
Outside the Healing Center, Lisa spies Tyler and warmly smiles at him. He shows her pictures on his cell phone and talks about eating pizza. She takes a picture of herself with his cell phone. Protestors outside the center start with Brandon by spilling his soda out of his hands. This leads to Tyler walking over and punching the guy who was picking on Brandon. Lisa is not too pleased at witnessing this and walks away.
At Al’s Garage, Angelo and Ryan discuss what went down at the warehouse in Brooklyn, while Angelo takes out a hi-tech instrument from a suitcase and administers a thick serum over the gash in his arm, followed by a shot that regenerates human tissue back over the gash in the skin. Ryan remarks that none of this was not suppose to happen yet. Angelo reminds him that what the V’s will do to traitors like themselves is far worse than anything they would do to a human and advises him to hide out. Suddenly, Ryan feels dizzy and falls to the ground as Angelo looks on watching him fall. Angelo apologizes and says can’t trust anyone.
Father Jack’s interview with Malik is over and Erica grabs him and takes him into the hallway and questions why he gave the pictures to the FBI. He claims he wanted to do the right thing. She looses her cool when she realizes he is too naïve and might have jeopardized everything. He storms off after he tells her he won’t trust anyone.
Erica boss calls her into his office still questioning while Dale would go into the warehouse alone. He mentions that her case notes do not match Dale’s and tells her stop lying. He produces a tape recorder and plays it. Her voice is heard, calling the police to come to the warehouse. She admits to being at the warehouse and tells her boss that she believes Dale is working for a terrorist cell and couldn’t come to him until she had hard evidence. Her boss tells her there is no record of her emergency call and he got the recording from the DEA who have all pay phones tapped in the area because the DEA have the area monitored for a smuggling crackdown. She tells him she will find a way to prove that Dale is a traitor.
Chad Decker is on the air and brings up the subject of whether or not the Visitors deserve the public’s trust and introduces his panel, which consists of one V advocate and one non-advocate. Watching this broadcast is Anna and her number two, whose faces reveal concern.
Erica goes to the church to talk to Jack and tries to convince him that Dale’s wife must know something that could help them. He is weary of getting involved any further and says he did what she said; he went home and is acting normal. She tells him there is no such thing as normal anymore and she needs his help. He refuses to help her, stating he could do more good at the church.
Erica meets with Dale’s wife, Jocelyn, and learns that Dale had a private cell phone. Jocelyn hands over phone records to Erica which contain calls to only two numbers, Jocelyn’s and one other that he called repeatedly.
Ryan awakes at the garage to find Angelo gone, while back at FBI office, Erica explains the phone records to her boss. Anytime they went on a lead about the terrorist cell, Dale would make a tip-off call on his private cell phone.
Ryan returns home, answers his ringing house phone and Angelo is on the other line. Angelo warns him he needs to severe contact with Val or else the Visitors would get to her. He names details about Val’s life to Ryan and tells him if he can find all this information out so can the V’s.
Tyler approaches Lisa at the Healing Center through the gate. He tells her they won’t let him in. She informs him that she is in trouble for recommending him and the counsel wants to kick him out of the Ambassador program. She says it’s up to the counsel and says goodbye.
On board the mothership Anna’s henchman is reprimanding Chad for his debate issue that was aired on television. He explains he made the audience feel comfortable with the diplomat relations. Anna questions whether he really believes this and he responds that the polls prove that he is correct. He states he influences public opinion and he did it to help her. He explains this time was a freebie and next time it will be on his terms. Chad walks away with a smirk knowing his manipulation has worked.
Back at his news desk reporting live, Chad tells the viewers that diplomatic relations have resumed and a limited number of Visitors will be able to apply for Visas. He directs the audience attention to Anna who is addressing the public from the sky, with thanks you’s and appreciation at this new development.
As Chad walks through the office he gets a phone call from Anna who thanks him for what he has done and quickly hangs up before Chad can say anything else.
---------- Erica meets with Father Jack as his request, who is now interested in helping to do something about the Visitors. Erica shows Father Jack a collection of names she took from the Visitors Task Force that have called the force regarding aliens. With this they will try and track down other people who want to join in the fight.
Back at their home, Val proclaims her business as a therapist is booming as she walks into the living room. She asks to see Ryan’s arm and by now it looks only like a bad scar. She notices a picture of them has been turned upside on the mantle. When she flips it over, a card with the name Cyrus, and an address falls out.
Back on the mothership, Dale is lying on the same white table as the hostage before and suddenly wakes up. The side of his head is healed yet scared and he catches his breathe.
REVIEW
This episode immediately dove right into the fact that the V's are up to no good and finally Scott Wolf showed some character with a few more smirks and smiles than he did in the last episode.
It will be interesting to see how the dynamics play out between Tyler and his mother the deeper Tyler gets involved with the V's.
As informative as this episode was, it wasn't too griping, only a lot of talking and not much action. With only two episodes left, it better pick up the pace or else we might not see this series come back next year.
Discussion Questions:
Do you think Chad is finally catching on that something is very wrong with the V’s, or do you think it is only his ego that is making him play the manipulation game?
Will Tyler be kicked off the Ambassador Program? As with anything that is hard to get into, this might be a ploy by the V’s to simply make him more anxious to be a part of them and more docile in the process, what do you think?
Who do you think Cyrus is and why did he leave his calling card at Ryan’s house?
Now that a Visa is available for Anna to roam freely on earth, what do you think her plans will be next?
Does Lisa really like Tyler or is she simply following orders?
