OBS RECAP & REVIEW: V – S1:E3 “A Bright New Day” - by Rose
RECAP
This week Anna and other chosen Visitors gain their Visa’s to roam freely in the U.S., New York in particular. Chad is reporting live from the Peace Ambassador Center in the city, where Anna is the first to gain entry along with Lisa and many others. As Anna shows her Visa to the journalists, Chad’s co-worker tells Chad he had a hand in making this happen. As he nods in humble agreement, he eyes Anna going up in an elevator, as she stares down at him with a blank look.
Father Jack has his hands full with many New York citizens whose faith is being testing by the V’s arrival and are pouring into his church for confession. He is visibly distraught on how to answer all their questions while in the confessional.
Ryan walks Val to work, on the premise he’s keeping her safe considering all the hoopla surrounding the V’s entry on earth. He uses that as an opportunity to meets up with Georgie to discuss a game plan to form a resistance. Ryan tells Georgie that the Fifth Column, the first uprising of V’s against their own kind, which was helmed by John May, can rise again.
Erica is buried in paperwork trying to sort out possible citizens that would join the resistance from the list she took form FBI, when Father Jack pays a visit. She is called away to go downtown to the Peace Ambassadors building and he stays behind at her house to help her with the list. On the New York mother ship, Dale, Erica’s now former partner, has regained consciousness. Anna’s number two, Marcus, is speaking with a minion about his temporary amnesia and how they need to find out if his cover has been blown. We learn that he has been undercover as a sleeper cell on earth for 20 years. The minion, Joshua, visits with Dale telling him he has been stabbed and he has post-traumatic memory loss. Dale urges him to help find out who tried to kill him.
Chad Decker is once again on the news reporting about a protestor named Marie Faulkner, whose husband’s F-16 fighter plane went down the day the V’s arrived and perished, has been on a hunger strike for almost a week. Anna is watching the broadcast, when Joshua arrives to tell her the FBI is on the way. Anna asks him to get as much information as he can on Marie Faulkner, with the intention of stopping her from allowing the protest movement to grow.
Tyler arrives at the Peace Ambassador building, where protestors are lined in the streets. Brandon asks if he will try and talk to someone about getting back into the Peace Ambassador Group but Tyler doesn’t want to get Lisa into any more trouble. Just as he is driving away on his scooter, his mother, Erica arrives with the FBI. The FBI was summoned because there have been death threats made against the V’s. Erica gets debriefed about the suspect who has made the death threats and against her wishes she gets partnered up with a V in order to join forces for the security detail. She asks to see their surveillance station and is shocked at how small it is. While talking with her new V partner she notices another door being opened across the hall. Inside she gets only a peek of a mass of computer screens.
Back at Erica’s house Father Jack comes across a file name of George Sutton and calls Erica to tell her that he’s found the leader of the secret meeting. Across town Georgie is walking with Ryan as Ryan hands him the business card with Cyrus’s name. Ryan informs George he fought with Cyrus (who is a Fifth Column member) against the V’s before he met George and he is on his way to meet with him to put the Column back together again.
On the mother ship, all twenty-nine ship captains are in attendance at a meeting with Anna. She informs them it is important to keep public opinion positive and use their powers to shape opinion and stop any resistance. As quickly as the meeting began, is as quickly as it ends, with all twenty-nine captains literally beaming out.
Dale is being told he is the only V that survived the warehouse massacre. After asking how bad the cut was above his head, he realizes that whoever tried to kill him saw his true face.
Anna is looking out over New York City from the mother ship when Marcus tells her the full dossier to Marie Faulkner is available for her to see. She tells him that they have to make an example out of Marie so she will not infect others with hatred.
Father Jack enters George Sutton’s home to find no one there. A woman enters right after and asks if he is counseling George about the murders. We learn George’s entire family was murdered and the woman suggests George went a little crazy afterwards cause he thinks aliens murdered his family.
Ryan doesn’t get much help from Cyrus except for a few contacts. Cyrus goes to the back to get the contacts for him with Ryan following behind. When Ryan opens the door, Cyrus points a gun at him. Cyrus waves his hands on a buzzer under a table behind him and tells Ryan the V’s are on their way. Cyrus was promised re-connection if he was to turn in enough of the members from Fifth Column, and Ryan was his last one needed. Cyrus asks Ryan if he misses the bliss. Ryan explains the bliss was how she controlled them, like a drug. Ryan attacks Cyrus and takes away his gun.
Erica and her new V partner head to the roof of the Peace Ambassador building and she notices a guard missing from the corner of the building. They rush downstairs to find a V guard down on the floor with his uniform jacket stolen. Erica searches the grounds and spots the shooter and follows him back inside the building. As Erica scans the room finds the shooter and Marcus spots Erica as she grabs the shooter and brings him down.
Tyler and Brandon grab some pizza and Tyler sees Lisa sitting at one of the tables. Tyler questions Brandon if he set this up and Brandon leaves. Lisa tells Tyler she spoke to the council and he is back on the Ambassador Program.
At the Peace Ambassadors building Erica’s shooter is taken from her and handed over to the V’s and she says she’ll be waiting outside, but she really has other plans. She tries to unlock the same door she saw the video screens in earlier and gains entry on the second try. Standing in the room, before her are screens depicting live video of citizens from all over. She hovers over one showing herself in the room and waves her arm back to locate exactly where the camera is. She finds it on a V uniform jacket hanging from the back of the door. She quickly exits the room just as Tyler and Lisa come into view on one of the screens.
Anna is rehearsing her apology for Marie Faulkner over and over again trying to gain the right amount of sympathetic tone in her voice and demeanor, going as far as mimicking crying. Joshua comes to get her and her face falls void of any emotion and follows him to intercept Marie who has arrived at the Peace Ambassador Center for her scheduled appearance at the ongoing protests outside. Anna works her magic and convinces Marie to give her a moment of her time, while down in the lobby, Erica is introduced to Marcus who wants to thank her for saving his life.
Dale is walking through a reconstruct of his old office in order to trigger any old memories. As he complains how awful it was to be undercover for so long he remembers that he wasn’t the only V at the bureau. He then recalls that Erica is the one who attacked him at the warehouse and wants to go back ‘down’ in order to kill her.
Georgie sneaks up on Father Jack at gunpoint in the church and questions why Jack was looking for him. He explains everything to him and tells him there is strength in numbers and they should all stick together.
While Dale is ranting and raving about getting back at Erica, the V with him tells him he will not let him go back down to kill her; he thinks Erica will make a great ally instead. The reconstruct beams away, just as the captains did at the meeting and Dale is once again on the white table, with a needle being stuck in his arm by his fellow V. As he squeezes the fluid into Dale’s arm, Dales mutters that he’s a traitor. In return, the fellow V says, “The Fifth Column says hello” and walks away, leaving Dale dead.
Marie Faulkner is approaching the podium at the Peace Ambassador Center with Chad Decker reporting live. Marie Faulkner’s tune has now changed after she spoke with Anna and is telling everyone how she is no longer angry and believes her husband’s death was for the greater good. Chad Decker looks on as Anna joins Marie on the podium.
Marcus and other Visitors are crawling all over Cyrus’s store, but they’ve arrived too late. Ryan and Cyrus are nowhere to be found. Marcus sees ‘John May Lives’ tagged with spray paint on the back of the door in the storage room where Cyrus tried to attack Ryan.
Tyler brings Lisa over to his house and they start kissing in his bedroom when his mother suddenly calls out his name. He meets her outside his bedroom, but Erica enters when she hears a noise and Erica sees Lisa standing there in her underwear; she removed her clothes so Erica wouldn’t see her in her V uniform. Erica asks Tyler to take Lisa home and they’ll talk later.
Anna is watching Chad report how there is a new support for the visitors especially after Marie Faulkner’s speech and the shooting attempt earlier. Anna turns around to face a V, who turns out to the supposed shooter and tells him he did a good job.
Erica and Father Jack are discussing the surveillance video screens she found at the Peace Ambassador building and how the video is being captured by the V uniform jackets. Georgie enters the church and is introduced to Erica. Georgie tells them he has brought a friend who will be joining them in the resistance and Ryan steps inside.
Lisa meets with Anna and tells her that Tyler is the one and that they should use him. Anna tells Lisa she is doing an excellent job, with first real smile we have seen. Lisa tells her mother thank you.
REVIEW
Well, this episode had more action than last and a lot more story arcs were introduced. And whoa, what about those twists! The surprise revelation that the V helping Dale to recall his memory was actually a traitor to his own kind and Lisa is Anna’s daughter. I did not see either one coming. When Anna walked away from Lisa at the end, it did look like there was hint of unsureness on Lisa’s face. Aw, the little fake blonde alien girl might actually be a starting to like poor Tyler.
It was way too convenient that the voice of the anti-V movement, Marie, would so easily and quickly be converted into a V believer. I don’t care how much one apologizes it’s not believable. On that believability note, Erica really needs to let her son know why he shouldn’t ‘hang out’ with the Visitors. Knowing what she does, I can’t see a mother withholding that kind of information, especially one who is an FBI agent.
Just when the series starts picking up the pace and showing much promise, there is only one more episode left this year. I hate when they do that! I truly enjoyed tonight's episode, did you?
Questions for Consideration
When Chad’s co-worker tells him he had a hand in the V’s getting their Visa’s, it was a hint at foreshadowing. Do you think Chad will eventually blame himself when the truth comes out?
From the way Marcus stared at Erica, do you think he knows she was the one at the warehouse?
Do you think Anna did something to Marie Faulkner to make her change her mind so quickly?
What do you think Ryan did with Cyrus?
