Vampire Diaries: Chapter 11 Written by Krystal
Elena stumbled down the dark corridor until the lights suddenly flicked on and she found herself in the presence of familiar lockers. A voice range out near her and Elena turned to see Bonnie and Meredith headed her way. Happier than ever to see her friends, Elena rushes to them demanding to know where they went. Too scared to continue working, Elena suggests the girls quit for the night, but Meredith eyes her suspiciously.
All through the weekend and the next week, Elena and the girls worked on the Haunted House. This left little time for Stefan, but the most frustrating part was Stefan’s continued resistance to be alone with Elena and the mystery that still surrounded him. Stefan never spoke about his family or life before Fell’s Church and refused to answer her questions, but every once in a while she could sense his true love for her. These happy days came less and less now though and Elena began to feel the distance growing between them.
That Friday the girls decided to spend the evening at Bonnie’s house, her family had gone for the night and they could do whatever they wanted. As the girls arrived, Bonnie greeted them at the door trying to pull the pet Pekingese back inside, but it was already too late. Yangtze had run outside and begun barking at a nearby birch tree. Meredith points out a crow perched on top, causing Elena to stiffen and look up. Its eye, that black eye, looked so familiar to her and she tried to remember from where. Suddenly the crow croaked and swooped down toward the Pekingese before flying off and disappearing in the darkness. Grabbing the Pekingese, the girls hurried inside for the evening and unpacked their things. It was only a matter of time before the girls settled into a routine and began discussing plans for the Haunted House and Elena relaxed. After many hours of work, Meredith announced that they were finally done, but they had spent so much time on everyone else’s costume they didn’t know what they were going as. Bonnie perks up announces that she knows what she’s going as, a druid priestess and Meredith chimes in as a witch. When they ask Elena, she says hers is supposed to be a secret, but what secret is there among such close friends? Elena explains that she found a photo of a Renaissance gown while doing research and is having it custom made as a surprise to Stefan. This brings up the point of Stefan’s costume and Bonnie suggests that he go as Count Dracula which Elena says she’ll mention to him. Still stuck on the subject, Meredith asks how things are going with Stefan and unable to put it into words, Elena grabs her diary and brings it back to the others.
Elena reads aloud an entry from the evening before, how there is a sadness about Stefan that she can’t reach and is afraid of losing him. The day before, while holding her, she felt something around his neck and when she inquired about it he froze. Finishing, she traces the last lines silently, “I feel as if someone has hurt him terribly in the past and he’s never got over it. But I also think there’s something he’s afraid of, some secret he’s afraid I’ll find out. If I only knew what that was, I could prove to him that he can trust me. That he can trust me no matter what happens, to the end.” Repeating the words out loud, “if only I knew” and the girls wonder what she’s talking about, but Elena recovers and improves that she wishes she knew what was going to happen with Stefan. Bonnie perks up with and suggests an old druid spell that shows a person who they are going to marry, after all what does Elena have to lose.
Five minutes before midnight and the girls had everything ready for their spell. In the backyard, Elena could hear Yangtze barking up a storm as she set the dining room table for one. As the clock began to chime, Elena pulled back the chair and self-consciously invited her future husband in. The candles blew out as a gust of wind from the French doors blew through the room, doors that Elena swore had been shut. Something moved in the darkness and terror washed over Elena until a voice called out, lighting a bright flame. Elena shrieked back as she recognized the mysterious young man from the gym and then accused him of inviting himself into others home. He retorts that she invited him in and she clarifies that she did not invite him in. Ignored her, the mysterious man began quoting Edgar Allan Poe’s To Helen, obviously aware of her names heritage. Elena stopped him, asking him to leave, for something about his voice made him feel strange things. Reaching for the candle, he caught her hand and turned it over to kiss her palm. Trying to withstand him, she urged him to stop, but he only looked into her eyes and asked her to come with him. He pulled the shirt from her neck as he supported her head, but strength returned to Elena and she jerked away. At first the young man seemed furious, but then he gathered himself and said he would leave, for now. As the man left, Elena looked at the grandfather clock and realized that time seemed to stop. Before she had a chance to confirm her suspicions, Bonnie and Meredith were yelling from outside and Elena rushed to see what was going on. Bonnie, crying, had the corpse of the poor Pekingese at her feet. Meredith suggests they all go inside, but when they returned to the living room, Elena noticed her diary was missing.
Stefan lifted his head from feeding, as a sound in the darkness disturbed him. Distracted, the doe roused and he let it go free as he cleaned himself of any evidence. Stefan had been feeding much more lately, fearful of the time when he would come to and find Elena limp in his arms. As a human, he would have detested the thought of drinking warm body from the body, but this was never discussed the evening Katherine had changed him, so very long ago.
All these years and Stefan could still remember it clearly. He had been alone in his bed when Katherine visited him, the evening before she was to name her husband, and Katherine had come to join him. As they began to enjoy themselves, Katherine leaned in toward his throat and bit down, draining him of his precious blood. At first the pain was terrible, but as it faded, all Stefan could feel was the delight and joy of Katherine’s feelings as their minds mingled and carried him away. Sometime later, he awoke in her arms as she guided him to drink from her and without hesitation he did just that.
Returning to himself, Stefan arose from the ground and brushed the dirt from his knees. The world was asleep and his senses were keen, but he was hungry again. The memory had awoken his appetite and he could smell a fox nearby.

Memorable Quotes
Elena: Once she had asked him if he missed Italy, if he was sorry he’d come here. And for an instant his eyes had lightened, the green sparkling like oak leaves reflected in a running stream. “How could I be sorry, when you are here?” he said, and kissed her in a way that put all inquires out of her mind. (Page 168)
Elena: “You!” she said, astounded. “What do you think you’re doing here?” She looked from him to the French doors, which were indeed open, showing the side lawn. “Do you always just walk into other people’s houses uninvited?” Mysterious Man: “But you asked me to come in.” (Page 177)
Mysterious Man: “It’s all right. You’ll see.” He pulled the shirt away from her neck, his other hand behind her head. (Page 178)
For anyone who wanted to hear the rest of the Edgar Allan Poe poem To Helen:
HELEN, thy beauty is to me Like those Nicèan barks of yore That gently, o'er a perfumed sea, The weary way-worn wanderer bore To his own native shore. On desperate seas long wont to roam, Thy hyacinth hair, thy classic face, Thy Naiad airs have brought me home To the glory that was Greece, And the grandeur that was Rome. Lo, in yon brilliant window-niche How statue-like I see thee stand, The agate lamp within thy hand, Ah! Psyche, from the regions which Are holy land!
