Vampire Diaries: Chapter 14
Written by Krystal

Elena was sure that Stefan wasn’t capable of killing someone, especially Katherine. Stefan ignored her protest and continued the story of how that evening he had hoped that Katherine would come to him. He had begun to notices the changes in himself and more than anything he was hungry. At dinner he realized that ordinary food would not satisfy the hunger and then he noticed the neck of a servant girl and knew why. Resisting the temptation all through the evening, Stefan prayed that Katherine would come to him. The next morning, the need was even stronger. Stefan approached Katherine’s bedroom to plead with her, but all he found was Damon. Stefan ignored him and pounded on Katherine’s door until Gudren answered. Gudren informs Stefan that Katherine went for a walk early this morning to think and she had been crying all evening. Damon agreed to help find Katherine and they began to search the gardens. Stefan had remembered a place Katherine liked to go and made his way there, but as he reached it a terrible premonition came over him. Slowly making his way to the nearby tree, Stefan noticed something white under it. As he comes closer, the smell of burned flesh fills his nostrils and he knows. Looking over he saw Katherine’s ring on a rock nearby and a piece of parchment on the ground.

Stefan released Elena’s hand and fell to the floor, plunging his face in his hands. Elena held him close to her as he explained that the note was for Damon and him. Katherine explained that she was selfish for wanting both the brothers and she could not bear causing strife between them. Elena tried to soothe him with her words by saying it wasn’t his fault, but Stefan insisted they killed her. He continued the story of Damon’s approach toward him as he sat with the ring and letter. They struggled over the ring, blaming each other for Katherine’s death and eventually began to fight with swords. Their father was shouting at them from the house and they fought harder to finish it quickly. Damon was always stronger and faster and as their father shouted, Stefan felt the blade break threw his guard and into his heart. As Damon came to stand over him and filled with rage, Stefan lifted his sword and stabbed his brother through the heart with his last strength.

The storm had moved on and Elena could hear the chirp of crickets as the wind sifted through the trees, but it was still in Stefan’s room. Stefan recalled how he had remembered nothing else until he woke in his tomb beside Damon. Damon ran into the night as Stefan shouted after him. Luckily they had been buried with the rings Katherine had given them and Stefan found her ring in his pocket. He tried to return home, but the servants screamed and ran to fetch a priest. Unable to do anything else, Stefan returned to the safety of the darkness where he belonged and stayed there ever since. He had killed Katherine with his pride and jealousy and damned Damon to eternal damnation. Bitterly laughing, he told Elena that the name Salvatore meant salvation and Stefan was derived from St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr; how odd that he had damned his brother to hell. Elena asked what had happened to Damon afterwards and Stefan told of how he had joined the Free Companies, ruthless mercenaries who robbed, plundered and killed. It was some timed before he heard from Damon again and he had grown powerful from human blood; possessing powers such as feeling minds, bending minds to his will and even the ability to transform into animals. Damon spoke to Stefan’s mind and said that he was returning to Florence and if Stefan was still there he would kill him. Believing Damon’s words, Stefan left Florence. Damon had made the most of his nature and now Stefan had killed a man because of the same nature in him.

Elena insistent that Stefan did not kill Tanner asked what happened between them. Stefan remembered using the Power on Tanner to get him to do what Elena wanted and then he left. Later he felt a dizziness come over him, the same dizziness he felt at the cemetery when Vickie Bennett was attacked. When Elena says there’s no way he could have done those things, Stefan says it had to be, “Who else could have done it, if not me?” Elena, without any explanation, blurts out Damon’s name. Stefan denies the possibility that someone like Damon could have done it, but Elena explains that she meant Damon, not someone like him; she has seen him. Stefan stared at her as she explained how she had seen Damon the gym, Bonnie’s house, the crow and the grim reaper that passed her in the Haunted House. Realization came over Stefan as he remembered the crow that crashed through the trees his first day. Elena continued to explain that if it was possible for Stefan to confuse the minds of those weaker than himself then wouldn’t it be possible for Damon to do the same to him. Elena stood up in joy and relief understanding that this was why Stefan had become so distant from her lately. She explains that there’s no reason to be afraid any longer, but Stefan says that Damon doesn’t control his thoughts and he has thought about taking her in public and forcing his way on her. Elena retorts that there is no reason to force her; she wants to be with him and share with him what he and Katherine had. Stefan tries to explain that he could hurt her; snapping a piece of wood in two, slashing a pillow open and lastly drawing his lips to her neck. Elena stood paralyzed for a moment before grabbing his face with both her hands. Stefan’s look became confused as she didn’t push him away and then changed to almost pleading before she pulled his face toward his and kissed him. As they kissed, the kissed became more urgent and Elena knew it was time. Stefan drew his mouth to her throat and Elena felt the sharp sting at first, but the pain faded instantly and she was filled with pleasure. Pulling the knife from beside the bed, Stefan asked if she trusted him and she nodded. He gazed into her eyes as he cut the base of his throat and she fed from him. Afterward, he held her for a long time before mentioning that he wished she could stay forever, but she couldn’t. Elena knew this and she responded that no matter what happened she would always be with him.

Memorable Quotes

Stefan: “I pounded on that door to wake…” He faltered, and then gave another humorless laugh. “I was going to say, ‘to wake the dead.’ But the dead aren’t so hard to wake after all, are they?” (Page 223)

Stefan: He looked up at Elena and finished simply, “And that is how… I died.” (Page 227)

Elena: He tried to oppose her. But her gentleness was stronger than all his inhuman strength. She shut her eyes and thought only of Stefan, not of the dreadful things she had learned tonight but of Stefan, who had stroked her hair lightly as is she might break in his hands. She thought of that, and she kissed the predatory mouth that had threatened her a few minutes ago.
She felt the change, the transformation in his mouth as he yielded, responding helplessly to her, meeting her soft kisses with equal softness. She felt the shudder go through Stefan’s body as the hard grip on her shoulders softened too, becoming an embrace. And she knew she’d won. (Page 237)

Questions for consideration:

Were you surprised to learn of what happened to Katherine?

Were you surprised to learn that it has been Damon all this time that has been stalking Elena and setting Stefan up?

Why do you think Damon is doing all this to Stefan after all these years of ignoring him and what does he want with Elena?

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
