Vampire Diaries: Chapter 3 Written by Katie Edited by Rose / Krystal
It was dawn and Stefan had just returned from the woods. Thinking about his first day of school, he remembered how other students had commented on his wardrobe and his mind wandered to a memory of his father’s face when Damon announced he was quitting University.
Their father was outraged, tells Damon he knows everything that has been going on at the school; the gambling, the jousting and the women, but Damon stood aloof. Stefan gave his brother credit in being able to not even wince at their father’s words. While his brother tried to charm Mr. Salvatore, a young girl came into the study; Stefan sat dazzled by Katharine’s lapis lazuli eyes and long golden locks. Her father had brought Katharine over from Germany to the warmer climate of Italy in hopes she would recover from a prolonged illness.
Katherine noticed she was interrupting and apologized, but Stefan asked her to stay, his chest aching at the sight of her. Mr. Salvatore agrees and comments that she looks pale and hopes she is not ill again, but Katharine reassures him that’s just how she is and is fine. Mr. Salvatore adds she should spend more time with them during the day as they only see her after twilight, but she replies that she has her studies during the day. Turning toward Katharine, Stefan notices her smiling, but to his dismay it was at Damon and he began to loathe his brother at that moment. As much as Stefan wanted to act on his impulses, he needed to remain a gentleman and just observe.
Stefan brought himself back to the real world wondering why he was dwelling on the past, but he couldn't help himself. He cherished his memories of Katherine and always wanted to remember, but he began to wonder what really brought him to Fell’s Church.
Elena awoke early that morning because she had promised to meet Matt before school. When she reached his house, Matt was already outside waiting for her. They walked awkwardly while Elena told Matt all about her time in France, but it was only a matter of time before they got to the heart of the conversation. Finally, Matt brings up what had been on Elena’s mind from the beginning. As much as Elena wanted to stay friends with him, Matt would always want more. As they walked, Matt noticed a crow and pointed it out, but when Elena looked it was already gone.
At school Elena started gathering as much information that she could about Stefan. She had a plan to get him to notice her, but when she reached European History Dick and Tyler were loitering in the hallway and started messing with Stefan. Just as Elena was about to step in, Matt showed up to save the day.
In class, Matt and Stefan started talking about football and Matt suggested Stefan try out for the team, but Stefan isn’t so sure and declines the offer. Throughout class Elena practiced her plan in her head and all too sudden the bell rang. With only one chance to establish her plan, Elena blocks Stefan’s exit and tells him she’s part of the Senior Welcoming Committee, but to her dismay Stefan cuts her off and declines using the football tryouts as an excuse. Elena looks around at the observer’s of her humiliation which included Caroline and quickly leaves.

Memorable Quotes
Damon: “I would have thought even you could understand such a simple sentence, Father. Shall I repeat it in Latin for you?” (Page 32)
Giuseppe: “You are telling me that I, Giuseppe, Conte di Salvatore, will have to face my friends knowing that my son is a scioparto? A ne'er-do-well? An idler who makes no useful contribution to Florence? “ (Page 32-33)
Giuseppe: “It’s not bad enough that when you are at school you waste your time and my money? Oh, yes, I know all about the gambling, the jousting, the women. And I know that if it were not for your secretary and your tutors you would be failing every course. But now you mean to disgrace me utterly. And why? Why? So that you may return to your hunting and hawking?” (Page 33)
Questions for consideration:
Why would Elena assume that Matt would want to be only friends with her?
Why do you think Damon, Stefan's brother isn't around anymore?
Why is Elena trying so hard to get Stefan's attention?
