Vampire Diaries: Chapter 6

The chapter opens with an entry in Elena’s diary – her first entry in over two weeks. She tells her diary about being frightened to talk of many things, even to her diary. Still afraid of what transpired in the cemetery, she writes about the old man being attacked and how all the kids have to stay in after dark. Mostly though, Elena has been busy with “Plan B” which is progressing nicely. Everyone seems to have forgotten her interest in Stefan, but Caroline has been missing at lunch so she doesn’t know or care what’s going on with her. The only thing she cares about now is Stefan. Even Bonnie and Meredith don’t know how important he is to her. Aunt Judith has started to worry, but Elena just can’t seem to concentrate on anything including the Haunted House fundraiser. Stefan hadn’t talked to Elena since the day she approached him, but that didn’t stop her from catching him staring at her in history. She mentions that Stefan seems so isolated and although it’s his choice she can’t help but feel sorry. The only person Stefan does seem to talk to is Matt.
As Elena finishes her entry, she feels bad about how the Jean-Claude rumor affected Matt. She apologizes to him one day after class and confesses that it was a lie to make people think that she wasn’t upset about Stefan. Matt tells Elena that Stefan is like that with everyone and he doesn’t talk about anything personal, but Matt has a feeling that behind Stefan’s wall he’s miserable. Elena realizes that she’s never considered this side of Stefan before. An idea suddenly strikes Elena and she convinces Matt to come to the Homecoming Dance with her next week, if he can guarantee that Stefan will go.
As Meredith, Elena, and Bonnie get ready for the dance at Elena’s house, Bonnie talks about the epic football game the night before. When the girls were ready they headed downstairs where Aunt Judith, Robert and Margaret gawk at their beauty and make comments that Elena is a form of the name Helen as in Helen of Troy. Bonnie chimes in a comment of, “Beautiful and doomed” before the door bell rings. Their dates had arrived and Elena searched for Stefan, but Matt informs that he’s probably already at the dance. When they arrive at the dance, Elena searches the floor while Tyler breaths heavily on her. When she looks towards Matt, she noticed his gaze fixed to his left and followed it to find Stefan. Summoning up the courage to ask him to dance, she approached him and said hello. An instinct somewhere deep inside of her told her to run, but she couldn’t move as she and Stefan held one another’s gaze. Just as he reached out his hand toward her, Caroline walks up; slipping her arm through Stefan’s and whisks him off. Elena finds herself swarmed by a circle of faces and Matt appears next to her. She focuses on Matt and he tells Elena that Caroline desired to go with Stefan to the dance, but did not know he was coming with her; she’d been following him around during lunch time and after school.
Distraught, Elena, Bonnie and Meredith head to the girls’ restroom to discuss Caroline’s outfit and Bonnie suggests that this may not be a bad thing after all and now Elena can finally move on. Annoyed at the girls lack of support, Elena leaves the restroom angry and begins to flirt shamelessly with several boys, including Tyler Smallwood. Tyler, reeking of alcohol, suggests that his crowd ditch the dance and go somewhere else like the cemetery. Tyler’s date says she won’t go after what happened to the old man and Tyler fishes his keys out uncaring. As they all smash into the car someone shouts out for Elena, but she just tells Tyler to drive.
