Vampire Diaries: Chapter 9 Written by Amanda Edited by Rose / Krystal
As Stefan drove home he thought about just how dissimilar Elena and Katherine really were. He notes the differences and similarities in their appearance and demeanor, making a special note about the differences in eye color and how Elena’s “narrowed with determination or challenge in a way Katherine’s never had.” Thinking of Katherine always brought back memories; this time it was the day Katherine showed of the new white gown, her father had commissioned for her.
Katherine notices that Stefan isn’t smiling and inquires why. He explains that he cannot be when he sees how she looks at Damon. As he talks of how his father would have thrown Stefan on the streets if not for Katherine, Damon enters and interrupts him. Damon points out that her father plans to return to Florence soon and unless she has a reason to stay, a husband, she will go with him. Stefan remarks that Katherine knows she must leave her father soon, but Damon adds that he may begin to grow suspicious and anger swept over Stefan. While arguing over whose best for Katherine, she interrupts and explains that whomever she marries would have to give up the sun. Damon pleads his case, but Stefan challenges his words. Understanding that she must make a choice, Katherine says to give her until twilight on Sunday.
Lost in his thoughts, Stefan had driven to the edge of the woods where he could see Wickery Bridge and the cemetery. Stefan thought about how he said he’d give up anything for Katherine and how he had done just that. Worried about being a murderer, he reminds himself that Vickie wasn’t going to die. This didn’t console him though; he remembered nothing about the attack except staggering through the church door and coming to outside with Elena’s screams. Thinking of Elena caused a rush of joy through him, but he questioned if he has the right to love her; just being near her put her in danger. He decides to vow that he will die of thirst before touching her, will never know his secret, and she would never have to give up the sunlight because of him.
Elena woke, hurting all over, but thinking about Stefan made everything okay. Heading downstairs, Elena greets her family and says she is going to go see Vickie today. Aunt Judith asks if Elena believes what Vickie says and Elena admits she does and that something happened. Robert announces from the other room that Bonnie and Meredith were there and she tells him to invite them inside. Aunt Judith leaves Elena and her friends who stand in awkwardness for a minute until Elena apologizes. Bonnie scolds her for running off the night before and Meredith adds, especially with Tyler. Talk eventually turns toward Stefan and Bonnie wants to know details. Elena tells the story of how Stefan appeared like cavalry to save her, but says she’ll tell them the rest after they visit Vickie.
Mrs. Bennett invites the girls in, telling them that Vickie has been resting and leads them to Vickie’s room. Vickie looked virtually catatonic, propped up on pillows in her bed with the comforter to her chin. Elena tries to talk to Vickie, but there is no response. Looking back at the others Meredith says they must have drugged her, but Mrs. Bennett said nothing about that so Elena tries again, asking Vickie what had happened. Vickie shrieks “No,” screaming that Elena is “part of it” and “evil.” The girls yell for Mrs. Bennett, who appears and suggest the girls leave. They leave in stunned silence until Meredith points out that Vickie’s hands were ice cold. Elena, confused, tries to think of something to offset this experience and suggests they go to the boarding house.
Mrs. Flowers answered the door at the boarding house when they arrived. Recognizing Elena, Mrs. Flowers invites them in and mentions that Elena is extremely pretty. The girls agree to stay downstrais while Elena heads upstairs in search of Stefan. Knocking on the door, she notices no sound coming from inside until the door swings open and Elena finds herself in Stefan’s arms. As he pulls away, she notices the cold look in Stefan’s eyes and pulls his mouth to hers in defiance. Nothing else existed when she kissed Stefan, but when they stopped she notes his dazed look and swollen mouth. Stefan speaks, voice controlled, and suggests that they should be more careful when they kiss. As Stefan holds her in his protective arms, Elena announces that she loves him and he says her name with an air of desperation. Noticing this, Elena asks Stefan if he loves her, but is interrupted by Mrs. Flowers calling from downstairs. Going to see what Mrs. Flowers wants, Stefan heads down leaving Elena alone in his room.
Without Stefan, Elena noticed how cold the room was and while looking around she saw the coffer from the evening before. Thinking of Bluebeard’s wife and how curiosity killed her, Elena picks up the coffer and opens it to find her silk ribbon – the one she’d lost on the second day of school. Tears swelled in her eyes as she realized just how long he’d cared for her. Hearing a sound outside, she folded the ribbon and replaced the coffer vowing that it wouldn’t matter if he can’t say he loves her – someday he would learn to.

Memorable Quotes
Damon: “Even the most doting of fathers must start to wonder when his daughter comes forth only at night.” (Page 135)
Katherine: “Who chooses to be my husband must give up the life of sunlight,” she whispered. “He must choose to live under the moon and in the hours of darkness.” (Page 136)
Stefan: I will die before touching her, he thought, making a vow of it. Before I broach her veins, I will die of thirst. And I swear she will never know my secret. She will never have to give up the sunlight because of me. (Page 139)
Meredith: “You see,” said Meredith archly, “all Mr. Tanner’s work has paid off. Bonnie now knows the Spanish Inquisition is not a rock group.” (Page 142)
Vickie: “You’re part of it! You’re evil!” she screamed hysterically at Elena. “Keep away from me!” (Page 144)
Elena: It doesn’t matter if you can’t say it right now. I’ll say it for both of us. And someday you’ll learn. (Page 149)
Questions for consideration:
Who do you think Katherine will choose, Damon or Stefan? Do you think she has a connection to Stefan's vampire state?
What did you think of Vickie’s reaction to Elena? Why do you think that she accused Elena of being part of what happened and evil?
Were you surprised to learn that Elena’s lost ribbon was in the coffer?
Did you see any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before while re-reading this Chapter?
