Vampire Diaries: Chapter 1
Written by Rose
Edited by Krystal

We find Elena standing in the graveyard, as an icy wind whips up around her. She calls out Damon’s name over and over. Frustrated at no response, she begins to think she was wrong in coming in search of Damon until he appears behind her. She immediately questions Damon about Stefan’s whereabouts, to which he coyly responds “Who’s Stefan?”  Infuriated Elena steps forward and slaps him without thinking. Damon’s head snapped to the side and Elena stepped back to observe him fully as he slowly turned his head back toward her.

Elena proceeds to tell Damon that she knows who and what he is, she knows he killed Mr. Tanner and that Stefan’s disappearance is no coincidence. Elena threatens Damon, but is cut off; reminded that there is little she can do against a vampire. While Elena stood watching Damon’s every move, she caught herself thinking how beautiful he was. Laughing, Damon offers a hand to Elena, which she slaps away and demands to know where Stefan is. As he withdrew his hand, Elena’s eyes notice the same ring Stefan wears around his own finger.  She makes a point to remember this as she feels it’s important. Damon continues and suggests that Stefan is a fool who believes Elena to be weak and easily led, like Katherine. Damon, on the other hand, knows Elena is quite strong, but she could be strong and offers her eternal life with him.

As understanding hit Elena, she felt sick as bile rose in her throat. She tells him no, but Damon stares deep into her eyes as he tries to convince her. Elena was transfixed by his eyes, but pulling them away she said no again. She wouldn’t let him make her forget. As Damon uses his powers to make her forget, Elena tries to remember what is so important to her. Caressing Elena’s neck sent a twinge of pain through Elena as Damon’s fingertips brushed over the tiny bite marks and Elena remembers. Elena pulls away from Damon saying she’s already found who she wants to spend eternity with. Damon refuses any knowledge about Stefan’s whereabouts, but Elena won’t give up. He says that before winter arrives, she will know what he is capable of and she shall be his.

As Elena is caught up in a blinding whiteness, Damon tells her not bother to looking for Stefan; he killed him last night and disappears.

Memorable Quotes

Damon: “Stefan who?” (Page 258)

Elena: “Don’t lie to me,” she said, her voice shaking. “I know who you are. I know what you are. You killed Mr. Tanner last night. And now Stefan’s disappeared.”
Damon: “Has he?”
Elena: “You know he has!” (Page 259)

Damon: “Winter is coming, Elena,” he said and his voice was clear and chilling even over the howl of the wind. “An unforgiving season. Before it comes, you’ll have learned what I can and can’t do. Before winter is here, you’ll have joined me. You’ll be mine.” (Page 263)

Questions for consideration:

Do you think that Damon really killed Stefan?

When Damon says “Don’t be as stupid as my brother is, or I might have to treat you the same way…” what do you think he means by it?

What was your favorite quote from this chapter?

Vampire Diaries: Chapter 2
Written by Rose
Edited by Krystal

As snow fell on the cemetery, Elena headed through the old cemetery and toward Wickery Bridge, determined to find Stefan.  By the time she reached the bridge, Elena was dead cold and thinking about Stefan; if he were truly dead she would know. As she trudged through Old Creek Road all thoughts were on Stefan, but she began to grow tired and needed to rest for a moment. She sank down on the side of the road, shut her eyes and thought of Stefan. She began to feel warm as she envisioned his arms around her, but then he was shaking her and she heard someone telling her to wake up.  As Elena opened her eyes, she found Bonnie and Meredith over her cold body, questioning why she was out here.

The two girls helped Elena to her feet and headed toward Meredith’s car. When they reached the car, Elena thought about how winter really was an unforgiving season, but Bonnie interrupted as she admonished Elena for running away from school. Everyone was out looking for Elena, but she bit her lip and decided not to tell them the whole story about Stefan, Damon and what really happened to Mr. Tanner.

When they arrived at Elena’s house, Aunt Judith was waiting inside with heated blankets. She asked where they found Elena to which Meredith replies. Judith became pale and she accusingly questions Elena’s motives, but changes her mind and tries to be cheerful again. Absently-mindedly, Elena says she needs to return to the graveyard when she’s dry, but Robert interjects saying she will do nothing of the kind; the police were out looking for Stefan and Elena would allow them to do their job. Elena tries to express Stefan’s innocence, but is quieted by Judith who says she needs rest. Frustrated, she pulls away from Judith and proclaims she is not sick, nor crazy.

The rest of the day, Elena sat on the living room couch as Judith answered the numerous phone calls. Beside her sat Meredith and Bonnie, who ask her if she wants to discuss what happened. Elena refused, they were all against her, but she knew the truth and continued thinking. After some time, Matt stopped by and Elena could tell by the look in his eyes that he too thought Stefan guilty. When Matt tries to explain himself, Elena cuts him off abruptly; he didn’t need to worry about her or keep his promise to a “murderer”. Saddened by Elena’s rudeness, Matt hurriedly left as Judith entered with sandwiches. During dinner, Elena tried not to think of all the things that could have happened to Stefan; he hadn’t called her, but she was sure he was alive. As Elena decides it’s best to go to bed, Meredith suggests that she and Bonnie stay the night. Robert decides that he too should stay the night and that he would sleep on the living room couch. They had planned this together, Elena thought as she looked at the distance from the couch to the front door.

Exiting her bathroom, Elena found Meredith and Bonnie on her bed, and made a snide remark about them spying. Meredith rebuts Elena’s distrust and lays into her about how she is shutting them out and keeping the whole truth from them. Elena breaks down as the girls hug and apologizes for everything. She can’t explain why she has been keeping things from them, but she admits that she knows who killed Tanner, attacked Vickie and the man under the bridge, and most likely killed Yangtze. The girls ask why Elena hasn’t told the police and she laughs hysterically, for of course she cannot go to them. Asking her friends to trust her on this, Bonnie and Meredith resign to the fact that Elena will remain mum on the subject and ask how they can help her. All of a sudden an idea comes to Elena; she looks at Bonnie and asks her to use her powers to help find Stefan. Confused at Elena’s change of heart toward her powers, Bonnie questions her, to which Elena remarks that she’s learned a lot since then. Bonnie warns that utilizing her powers, untrained, is dangerous and Elena expresses her concern for Stefan. When she looked back at Bonnie, she was sitting upright, chin high and simply utters, “We need a candle”.

As they lit a candle, Bonnie asks for Meredith and Elena to focus on finding Stefan as they look at the candle flame. Staring deeply into the flame, Elena thought of Stefan’s woolen sweater under her chin. Bonnie broke the silence with a moan and began to speak the words “Alone… in the dark.” As she continued, Bonnie spoke as if she was in Stefan herself. She was alone in the dark and something was behind her; rocks. She felt numb and cold with water everywhere, up to her neck and she was hungry; dying of thirst. Elena felt her heart tighten as she realized that Bonnie was inside Stefan’s thoughts and might discover what Stefan was. Bonnie continued, saying she deserves to die for killing Katherine and Elena couldn’t contain herself; she screamed out, “No!” and Bonnie stopped cold.

As Elena apologized for interrupting the trance, Bonnie looked straight forward and spoke again. The voice was familiar; it was the same voice that had warned Elena and Meredith in the graveyard. It tells Elena not to go to the bridge and that only death awaits there.  Afterwards, Bonnie slumped forward and awakens from her spell. She remembers everything that happened and questions Elena what Stefan meant about being a killer. Elena says Stefan must have been hallucinating and Meredith is shocked that Elena believes Bonnie was really Stefan. Elena reassures Meredith it was definitely Stefan and that he apparently in under Wickery Bridge.

Memorable Quotes

Elena: “The police think he killed Mr. Tanner. But he didn’t. You know that, don’t you?” (Page 269)

Elena: “Well, I’m just fine, thank you. Ask anybody here. So you can stop worrying. Besides, I don’t see why you should keep a promise to a murderer.” (Page 271)

Stefan via Bonnie: “That’s… funny. I never thought I’d want to see the sun so much. But it’s always dark here. And cold. Water up to my neck, like ice. That’s funny, too. Water everywhere – and me dying of thirst. So thirsty… hurts…” (Page 278)

Stefan via Bonnie: “Thirsty. I need… life?” Bonnie’s voice was doubtful, as if not sure how to translate some concept. “I’m weak. He said I’ll always be the weak one. He’s strong… a killer. But that’s what I am, too. I killed Katherine; maybe I deserve to die. Why not just let go…” (Page 278)

Questions for consideration:

With the way Elena has been treating Matt, how much longer do you think it is before his gives up on Elena? Do you think he will? Do you think he’s better off if he distanced himself from Elena?

Who do you think is controlling Bonnie and giving Elena warnings through Bonnie’s voice?

Were you surprised to find that Stefan was under Wickery Bridge? Do you believe he is really there?

Do you think Elena and the others are going to head to Wickery Bridge that night? If so, how do you think they are going to get past Robert?

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?
