Vampire Diaries: Chapter 13 Written by Rose Edited by Krystal
Elena finally woke as she tried to piece together what had happened last night. She remembered Damon threatening Margaret and giving into him, but why was she still alive. The fresh puncture marks were evidence of his presence, but her memories were blurry. She remembered Damon sharing his blood and her wanting it, but he hadn’t turned her. She refused to believe it was some kind of kindness or a conscience that stopped him from draining her; maybe he just wants to draw the game out or have her be like Vickie.
Needing to vent, Elena wrote in her diary about the fear of the coming Founder’s Day and not knowing what to do about Caroline and Tyler. She had to figure something out before Caroline read her diary in front of everyone and she would; she was chosen by the school board, the same board that Tyler’s father worked on. There was no way to get her diary back unless she gave into Damon, but she was afraid of him and of what would happen to her and Stefan.
The next day Elena was feeling a little clearer; she had decided what she was going to do. She would tell Stefan everything and hope that he would understand. Elena slipped out of the house without informing her aunt where she was going; ever since Damon’s visit, Aunt Judith and Robert had been hinting at him.
At the boarding house Stefan answered and suggests they go for a walk, but Elena insists they go upstairs and talk in private. Leading her upstairs, Stefan stood by the window as Elena looked around the room. Opening the silver coffer she pulled out the apricot ribbon and held it out to him. She tells him that she found it a long time about and had written about it in her diary, the same diary that was stolen by Caroline. After she finishes telling him everything she apologizes and he asks why she didn’t just tell him. She describes her dreams, but he is simply happy to finally understand. Elena was now frozen; she wanted to tell him about Damon, but she couldn’t now. Finally in his arms again, Elena brushes back her hair to let him feed from her soft neck. After they had shared with each other, they lay down in each other arms and he professed his love. It was the first time he had ever said it to her aloud and as he shifted and removed Katherine’s ring she looked at his hopeful eyes. He explains that after Katherine he never believed he could love again, that he kept the ring as a symbol of her in his heart. Now he wanted it to be a symbol of something else and Elena froze. Misunderstanding her silence, Stefan tried to rationalize her rejection, but she forced him to look at her. As he looked into her eyes, Stefan took her hand and slid the ring onto her finger it fit perfectly.
Elena jokes that they should keep it a secret from Aunt Judith for a while and Stefan warns her that he will be difficult to live with and she can change her mind. Elena says that she will never change her mind as long as he loves her. Elena reminds that if something isn’t done about Caroline and Tyler it won’t matter if she never changes her mind.
It was the night before the big day and Elena sat writing in her diary again. Stefan had come up with a brilliant plan and she felt like everything was finally better. Wherever Caroline had hidden the diary didn’t matter; she would need to bring it out for the Founder’s celebration and that was the key. Everyone was required to meet up and Mrs. Grimesby’s house to change into period outfits before the parade and anything that wasn’t part of the costume would have to be left behind. Bonnie would watch Caroline as she left her house, noting what she was carrying. Once Caroline reached Mrs. Grimsby’s house, Elena would be waiting to take over. She would note where Caroline left her bag and tell Meredith and Stefan who would search the house of Caroline’s car, depending on when the bag disappeared. It was a perfect plan thanks to Stefan and she had learned her lesson. She mentions her ring and how she will wear it tomorrow; if Mrs. Grimsby asks she’ll say it was from Renaissance Italy.

Memorable Quotes
Elena: “I know, you’re waiting for me to say it. There is a way to get my diary – Damon’s way. All I need to do is agree to his price.” (Page 440)
Elena: “I wrote about it because I thought it was evidence that you’d cared about me all along, enough to pick up and keep it. I never thought it could be evidence of anything else.” (Page 444)
Stefan: Í love you,” he said softly. Elena: At first Elena, in her pleasant haze, simply accepted the words. Then, with a chill of sweetness, she realized what he’d said. (Page 448)
Stefan: “I kept the ring because it was a symbol of her. So I could keep her in my heart. But now I’d like it to be a symbol of something else.” Again he hesitated, seeming almost afraid to meet her eyes. “Considering the way things are, I don’t really have any right to ask this. But, Elene—“ He struggled on for a few minutes and then gave up, his eyes meeting hers mutely. (Page 448-449)
Questions for consideration:
Where do you think Mrs. Flowers has been? She never seems to be around when Elena calls for Stefan, do you think something has happened to her?
Why would Stefan use Katherine’s ring as a sign of his engagement to Elena? Do you think a part of him still thinks of her as Katherine?
Do you think Elena should have told Stefan about Damon? Do you think not saying something is going to come back to bite her?

Vampire Diaries: Chapter 14 Written by Rose Edited by Krystal
Bonnie was shivering from the cold as she waited outside the Forbes house for any sign of movement. When the door finally opened, Bonnie hid behind the shrubbery and watched as Caroline’s family emerged. Caroline was carrying a white drawstring purse that was big enough to hold Elena’s small diary and with a sense of satisfaction, she made her way to the corner of Thrush Street and Hawthorne Drive.
As Elena and Aunt Judith head toward the corner, Elena points out Bonnie and they stop to pick her up. Bonnie slid in back and joined Elena, whispering what Caroline was carrying. As they arrived at Mrs. Grimsby’s, Elena and Bonnie hopped out as Aunt Judith continued on toward the school. Mrs. Grimesby was the Fell Church’s librarian and her house suited her, with books everywhere. She also was the keeper of Fell’s Church’s historical facts, including clothing from the town’s earliest days. The entire house was alive with students getting ready and before Elena could ask, Mrs. Grimesby ushered Elena into the same room as Caroline. Mrs. Grimesby a well preserved dress to Elena and explained it was believed to have been owned by Honoria Fell. Looking around, Elena spotted the white bag at Caroline’s feet and pushes back the urge to grab for it. As she makes her way to the mirror, Elena asks how they know the dress belonged to Honoria Fell and Mrs. Grimsby says that Honoria’s journal mentions a dress just like it in her journal. Stunned at this fact, Elena asks more about the journal and Mrs. Grimsby explains that it lay downstairs if she wishes to see it. Elena was nearly ready and Mrs. Grimsby grabbed the rose garment jacket from a nearby chair, but as she lifted it a violet piece of paper fell to the floor. Grabbing the note before Mrs. Grimsby could look; Elena read the one line from her journal entry, “Something awful is going to happen today.” Elena forced herself to remain calm and said she was ready, but so was Caroline. As Mrs. Grimesby instructs them to go out and wait for their rides, she reminds Caroline not to forget her reticule. Elena watched in horror as Caroline picked up the white drawstring bag lying on the floor and tied it around her waist. Mrs. Grimsby explains that Caroline had picked it up earlier that week fix some loose beadwork. Elena felt flush and explained that said needed some fresh air. Outside Bonnie and Meredith were waiting for news and Elena frantically explains the bag is part of Caroline’s costume, so there’s no way she would leave it anywhere. Elena has no idea what to do, but tells the girls to watch Caroline as she heads for her ride.
The parade was pure torture to Elena as she sat beside the mayor and his wife. Somewhere in the parade ahead was Caroline and there was nothing Elena could do. At lunch Elena continued to be trapped by her position as Caroline sat with Tyler at a nearby table. She could see perfectly as Stefan approached Caroline, but it was obvious that his powers had not worked, as Caroline ignored him and Tyler stood up in anger. Everything after lunch was a daze until someone nudged her to head backstage. She listened as the mayor made a speech, gave out awards including one for Matt, and then came the pageant. Elena watched as the elementary children giggled, tripped and forgot their lines, but when it was over she waited in horror as Mayor Dawley called for silence. The first presenter was John Clifford who read from the works of M.C. Marsh, the only poet Fell’s Church had ever produced. As John finished, Caroline took the stage with an air of responsibility. Caroline announced that she would not be reading a poem by M.C. Marsh and it wasn’t relevant compared to what she had ‘found’. Elena’s eyes searched the audience and found Stefan, Bonnie and Meredith at his side, but she also noticed Tyler and his goons nearby. As Caroline drew the diary from the bag, Elena nearly fainted, but then she noticed something. The book in Caroline’s hands was green, not blue like Elena’s diary and the look on Caroline’s face was unquestionable. Caroline became frantic as she dipped her hand back in the purse, as if to find another book inside. The audience began to mumble as they grew impatient and Caroline hurries offstage, throwing her diary at Elena on the way out. As Elena looked once again at Stefan, Bonnie and Meredith, she also notices another dark figure leaning against the north wall. As Elena took the stand to make her speech, she looked to the dark figure; it was Damon. When she was finally done and free to leave, Elena floated offstage and without thinking, her legs carried her over to Damon. He slipped out the side door and she followed him.
In the courtyard, Elena walked to within a foot of Damon and simply asked why. Despite Damon’s response of his own purposes, Elena doesn’t agree and feels a frightening feeling between them, one of power, one that was building. He warns her not to push him, but she say he needs it and his face moved inches from hers. A voice brakes their intense moment and Elena turns to find Aunt Judith, happy to see Damon by Elena’s side. As Judith talks to Damon about the ceremony, Elena wonders aloud where Stefan is. Aunt Judith says she has not seen him lately, but decides to invite Damon to dinner. Annoyed, Elena yells at Damon to stop it.

Memorable Quotes
Caroline: Caroline’s fingers were dipping into the bag as if she just couldn’t wait. “What I’m going to read is about Fell’s Church today, not a hundred or two hundred years ago,” she was saying, working herself up into a sort of exultant fever. “It’s important now, because it’s about somebody who’s living in tow with us. In fact he’s right here in this room.” (Page 463)
Elena: There was a long moment of silence and then she spoke. “Why?” Damon: “I thought you’d be more interested in how.” (Page 467)
Questions for consideration:
When Elena learned that Honoria Fell kept a journal, Elena became interested in the conversation. What significance do you think this has? Do you think Elena relates to Honoria?
When Damon said that he got invited to tea at the Forbes’, do you think he meant that he galore them into inviting him in?
Why do you think Damon helped Elena even though she never asked for it?
Did something or someone in this chapter take you by surprise?
