Vampire Diaries: Chapter 5
Written by Rose
Edited by Krystal

The next morning, Elena writes in her diary. She woke up extremely weak, but when Stefan came to her mind, she tried to get up only to have Aunt Judith put her straight back. Bonnie and Meredith had left early in the morning and she sat waiting for Stefan to call. He promised he would and when he did she was going to tell him…

The next day Elena is shocked by her previous entry; she had bought a new diary and never officially started her new diary. She laments the loss of her previous diary and how much it bothers her that someone is reading her personal thoughts and feelings for Stefan. Elena knew that she and Stefan were finally together and she had been waiting for him all her life. She had gone to visit him yesterday and so had the police, but he had not been accused of anything. In the end there was no evidence against Stefan and any of them could testify that Stefan himself was attacked. Stefan still didn’t remember what had happened, but he knew Damon was involved. Ending the diary, Elena wonders who the new European History teacher will be.

At school, Elena noticed the unusual greetings that befall her as everyone looked away or found a reason not to face her, but as she entered European History all that fell away as she beheld her new teacher. Alaric K. Saltzman was young and boyish, but he smiled back at the students as they filled in. Stefan arrived and took a seat next to Elena, but no one was talking as Alaric ordered the students to put their desks in a circle. He asks the students to talk about the loss of Mr. Tanner and Tyler stands up; he openly discusses the discovery of Tanner’s body, the concern for the community and how no one has stopped the killer, eyeing Stefan. Elena notices that Caroline somehow seemed to signal Tyler to stop and he sits down. Wanting to know more about the discovery, Alaric asks Bonnie to stand up. Bonnie explains how Mr. Tanner was to be a prop, a bloody sacrifice, for the Haunted House and was suppose to scare everyone. As she retells the story, she breaks down crying and Alaric apologizes for her distress and changes the subject. Wanting to have a good student-teacher relationship, Alaric tells everyone to come to his house this evening. Most of the students agree and Mr. Saltzman excuses the class, but asks Tyler and Bonnie to stay behind.

Stefan told Elena to meet at her locker, but when she arrives, Caroline and two other girls were looking her way. Getting impatient with this secret whispering, Elena walks over to Caroline and demands to know what is going on and why everyone is avoiding her. Caroline reminds Elena of her warning at the beginning of the year, but Elena’s undoing was her own; after all she was dating a murderer. Taken aback, Elena proclaims Stefan’s innocence, but Caroline simply suggests Elena dump Stefan before no one will talk to her and walks away. Finding her voice, Elena asks Caroline if she is going to the Ramsey House this evening and if she is, Elena will be there with Stefan, so game on.

Stefan appears and questions Elena about the conversation with Caroline. Elena lies, but Stefan draws the truth out of her and says that maybe Caroline is right about Elena and him. He had sensed the hostility all day long, but everyone seems to be taking it out on her. Worried about Elena, he suggests that they not see each other for a while and Elena simply won’t have it. Elena says that the only way she’d ever announce they had broken up, was if Stefan himself said he didn’t love her and never wanted to see her again. When she pushes him to tell her just that, she is cut off when Stefan kisses her passionately on the lips.

Memorable Quotes

Caroline: “I told you your time on the throng might be running out. But it isn’t my doing. What’s happening is simply natural selection. The law of the jungle.”
Elena: “And just what is happening?”
Caroline: “Well, let’s just say that going out with a murderer can put a cramp in your social life.” (Page 323)

Elena: “Say it,”she told him. “Tell me how you can get along without me, Stefan. Tell me-“
She never got to finish the sentence. It was cut off as his mouth descended on hers. (Page 326)

Questions for consideration:

What do you think of the new teacher, Alaric Saltzman?

What do you think Elena meant when she said, “That explains it” during class, after Alaric mentions staying at the Ramsey’s and his invitation to teach?

If Caroline wants to take Elena’s spot on the throne, then why is she giving Elena advice to drop Stefan and save her reputation?

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?

Vampire Diaries: Chapter 6
Written by Rose
Edited by Krystal

Stefan found himself at Elena’s house, agreeing politely to everything Aunt Judith said. Judith was uncomfortable with his presence, but she was making and effort and therefore he would too, if not for simply for Elena. Even when she wasn’t next to him, Stefan was always aware of Elena’s presence. He loved her so much and no longer compared her to Katherine; sure she shared Katherine’s hair and skin, but beyond that they shared nothing. Sadly, her strength was what made their love so dangerous. He had not been able to turn her away when she offered blood to him and even now he looked for any small change that signaled he had gone too far. He needed to be more careful, but here he was with her instead of out feeding. Aunt Judith suggest the two stay for dinner before going to the party, but Elena says they plan to get something on the way. Stefan agrees, despite not needing ordinary food, and Elena heads upstairs to dress. Before she leaves, Stefan tells her to gear a high necked sweater, but Elena reveals the almost healed wounds. Tearing his eyes away from the brilliant burgundy puncture marks, Stefan explains that the wounds were not really what he was concerned about.

Upon arriving at the Ramsey house, they were greeted with curious expressions. Alaric was nowhere in sight, but Caroline sure was; sitting on a bar stool nearby Caroline looked toward Elena mockingly before making the nearby boy laugh. Luckily, Bonnie came to their rescue, as she yelled for Elena and motioned them to join Meredith, Ed and her. The girls talk about the new teacher and his “invitation” to come this evening, but the real topic of discussion was Alaric’s words with Bonnie after class.

Bonnie says that Alaric wanted to apologize for making her relive the horrible Tanner experience and suggested they form a support group and write an essay to ease the pain. Stefan turns a sly laugh into a cough, but Elena knew that his questions were not idle curiosity and that he was not amused. It was obvious to her that deep down Stefan felt mistrustful of the new teacher, but then a lot of people felt that way about Stefan. They continue to discuss how odd it was that Alaric made the get-together look spontaneous, when it obviously was not and how he didn’t seem to know how Mr. Tanner died, even though everyone had been talking about it.  Bonnie mentions that Mary overhead a conversation between Dr. Feinberg and the medical examiner and that Tanner’s body had not a drop of blood left inside it. As Bonnie continues, Stefan asks if the police have any leads and Bonnie mentions that Elena said she knew. Not wanting to talk about this publicly, Elena hushes Bonnie to silence and heads out for refreshments.

Being with Bonnie and Meredith had made Elena forget all the sideways glances that people were giving her, but now she was angry. As she made her way to the dining room, she purposely held the gaze of anyone who looked at her way. At the snack table, she continued with her brazen behavior, grabbing across people to grab crackers and cheese. Putting a breadstick in her mouth, Elena turned and shock hit her as Damon stood before her, leaned over and bit the other end of the breadstick. Her senses revived, Elena threw the breadstick away and Damon caught it. She didn’t know what to do, but before she could do anything he grabbed her wrist and caressing it softly, lulling her fear.

Still in shock, Elena barely noticed that Sue had come over to ask her if everything was okay. Sue introduces Damon as a college student from the University of Virginia who was down visiting friends. Elena realizes that Damon is playing one of his evil games, but hopefully he wouldn’t do anything in public. Damon playfully banters about his major in American Folklore and remarks that a mole on the neck means you will be wealthy, asking if he could check Elena. A voice answered from behind Elena and she recognized it as Stefan. Her sense heightened by the shock, Elena takes in the reactions of everyone around them and puts the pieces together; Damon was trying to purposefully provoke Stefan in front of everyone. Immediately Elena tells Stefan they should go home, but he was still lost in the fog of anger. Slowly, she felt him respond as he relaxed and the two walk toward the door. Trying her hardest to keep her eyes forward, Elena felt a sensation come over her, as if she should expect to be stabbed with a knife.

Just before reaching the door, Alaric finally made an appearance asking if they are leaving. Elena says that she is not feeling well, secretly hoping that Stefan did not turn around and return to the dining room. By the time Elena reached the threshold, she finally noticed the violet paper stick out of her purse and opened it. As she read the paper she felt her world rock, but lied to Stefan as they stepped into the rain.

Memorable Quotes

Meredith: “Your incredible sensitivity has me ready to throw up,” said Meredith in a strangled voice. “Could we possibly talk about something else?” (Page 333)

Damon: “Mind if I have a bite?” (Page 335)

Elena: “What’s your major?”
Damon: He smiled at her. “American folklore. Did you know, for instance, that a mole on the neck means you’ll be wealthy? Do you mind if I check?”
Stefan:I mind.” (Page 338)

Questions for consideration:

What do you think are Alaric’s real intentions behind inviting most of the students to his house?

Do you think the note in Elena’s purse was from Damon? Do you think the color purple/violet has any significance?

What do you think was written on the note?

Did something or someone in this chapter catch you by surprise?

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
