Vampire Diaries: Chapter 7
Written by Rose
Edited by Krystal

As Stefan and Elena leave the Ramsey House, Elena comments on Damon’s appearance in public. She was surprised to see him around ordinary people, every time before it was a deserted place; like the gym or the graveyard. Elena immediately realizes her mistake, for she had never told Stefan about search for Damon three days prior. Quickly covering her tracks, she says she was referring to when Bonnie, Meredith and she were chased through the graveyard. After seeing Stefan tonight, Elena knew she could never tell him about Damon’s action; if she did it would only lead to Stefan’s death. With this sickening knowledge, Elena recalled when Katherine tired to keep the two brother’s from fighting and the only thing that came of it was a death match. She would never let Stefan know, never.

Changing the subject, Elena ponders aloud who could have invited Damon inside. When Stefan confirms her notion of needing an invitation, she mentions the gym where Damon wasn’t invited. Stefan clarifies that it only counts when the place is home to a human; they needed to eat and sleep there. He also explains that as long as the intention is there, the invitation did not need to be verbal. As Elena asks more questions into the limitations of vampires, Stefan says that running water can be a barrier for most, but not him because he was weak; the more you belong to the dark the more the dark’s limitations bind you. Deciding it was time for Elena to know more about the rules of vampires, Stefan pulls the car over.

Firstly, garlic doesn’t do anything, but another plant, vervain, would protect its wearer from bewitchment. Secondly, strong light or direct sunlight would be painful. Thirdly, the weather is a sign of a vampire’s presence and crosses do nothing, unless the person believes deeply in its power. As he goes deeper into the ways to kill vampires, Elena asks about the ability to change into animals. Stefan says that Damon is limited to one or two animals and that real animals will react to a vampire despite being in disguise. Elena immediately remembers Yangtze’s reaction to Damon that night at Bonnie’s, but then asks about mirrors. Stefan pauses for a second before he explains that mirrors reflect a person’s soul and since his kind are considered to have no souls... As he tilted the rearview mirror down to look at Elena, she looked in and saw his haunted sad eyes staring back at her. Holding him tight Elena professed her love for him and he responds with the fact that she is the mirror and has stolen his soul. Dropping her at home, Stefan tells Elena to lock the door for the rest of the evening.

As Elena entered the house, Aunt Judith greeted her franticly and suggests that maybe Elena shouldn’t spend so much time with Stefan. Elena was wildly mad and had just about enough of people ‘protecting’ her; she loved Stefan and would stand by him no matter what. Taken aback by Elena’s behavior, Aunt Judith sets her foot down, but Elena was already crying and ran upstairs to her room.

Elena dragged herself out of bed later and called Bonnie to check what had occurred after they left the party. Bonnie talks about how gorgeous Damon was with his dark hair and eyes. Of course if you liked light hair and hazel eyes… hazel eyes; Alaric had hazel eyes. Finally off the phone, Elena remembered the violet note she’d found in her purse. Hopeful that the words might have changed, Elena unfolded the paper to reveal the three sentences, but they hadn’t. They were the same three lines; her lines, that were taken straight from her stolen diary.

The next day, Meredith and Bonnie rang Elena’s doorbell. Stefan had called Meredith and asked her and Bonnie to escort Elena to school since he would not be attending. Bonnie thinks it absolutely sweet that Stefan is so protective of Elena and Meredith adds that he’s probably an Aquarius like Alaric. As they walked in silence Elena wondered what was keeping Stefan, but when she saw a violet piece of paper on the office bulletin board everything seemed to fade. Ripping the note down, Elena made her way to the nearest restroom where Meredith ordered two poor freshmen out, assigning one to guard duty. With the bathroom now empty, Elena told the girls about her diary and the note in her purse. They rehash details of the party, trying to deduce who it could have been. As Bonnie tries to guess who it could have been, Elena blurts out that it was Damon who did it; Damon was the killer. As Bonnie reacts franticly to the news, Elena tells the girls that they have to be on guard and to never invite Damon into their home.

As Elena enters the cafeteria Caroline gives her a vicious smirk, but Elena hardly notices, for her attention turned toward Vickie Bennett. The girls take their seats at an unusually empty table and start to discuss Damon, but then Bonnie notices something strange happening nearby. Vicki was at the front of the cafeteria now, but she was no longer crumbled and subdued, she was looking around with a smile. All of a sudden Vickie started unbuttoning her sweater as everyone watched, but no one took too much notice until she took off her shoes. The cafeteria grew into a frenzy as Vicki continued to undress herself, but the girls stared in shock; wasn’t anyone going to stop her? Unable to walk anymore, Elena rose from her seat and shield Vickie from everyone with the dropped sweater. Suddenly, Vickie seemed coherent again and looked around in a daze, seeming unaware of her behavior or her lack of clothes. Looking around, Vickie finally focused on her savior, but the reaction was not one of thanks. She began to yell that Elena was one of them and ran barefoot from the cafeteria, leaving Elena stunned.

Memorable Quotes

Stefan: “You’ve stolen my soul,” he said. (Page 348)

Meredith: “He’s probably an Aquarius, too,” said Meredith. “Come on, Elena, before I kill her to shut her up about Alaric.” (Page 351)

Bonnie: “That guy was the killer? The guy that kissed me?” (Page 354)

Questions for consideration:

What do you think of all these elements that are important to the druids, first the oak trees and now vervain?

Stefan said that vampires are supposed to have no soul and therefore couldn’t be seen in mirrors, but then Elena saw him in the mirror. Do you think that what Stefan said was true and he is somehow an exception, or do you think he was proving that it is false? If true, why do you think Elena could see Stefan?

What do you think happened to Vickie that made her start to strip in the middle of the cafeteria? Do you think Damon has some control over her? If so, what do you think his intentions are?

Did someone or something take you by surprise this chapter?

Back at Elena’s house, the girls discuss Vickie’s strange behavior in the cafeteria and point out she looked exactly the same as the night of homecoming, minus the scratches. Finishing their food, the girls head up to Elena’s room where she shows them the first note. Meredith points out the handwriting looks male, yet the paper screams female. As Bonnie jokingly talks about how romantic a killer can be, Elena saw a black crow outside the open window. Slamming the window shut, Elena scolding Bonnie for her absentminded words and worried for her. If there was one thing Elena had learned about Damon, it was how unpredictable he could be.

The next morning, Stefan approached Matt in the hopes of borrowing his car. Stefan needed to drive south in the hopes of finding a flower, a specific flower, vervain to be specific. Matt stared questioningly at Stefan as he thought about the idea of loaning his car to the guy that stole his girlfriend. Stefan should have known that Matt wouldn’t help him; despite all that Matt had done for Stefan, he knew that Matt had every right to dislike him. It wasn’t to Stefan’s surprised then that Matt didn’t loan him his car, but it was a surprise that Matt was going to accompany Stefan on his trip.

Elena called the boarding house again, but there was only silence before the line was disconnected. Elena suspected that it was Mrs. Flowers, but that didn’t tell her where Stefan was. As she returned to her bed, Meredith and Bonnie talk about Elena’s suggestion to stay at Bonnie’s house. Bonnie insists that it’s not necessary, but Elena felt it was her responsibility to protect Bonnie. At Bonnie’s house, Elena spent a few moments searching all the windows and door only to find that they were all sealed and locked. While trying to sleep Elena’s thoughts revolved around Vickie’s strange behavior and Stefan and she found herself drifting into dreams. Elena found herself in a long hallway covered by mirrors and Stefan was outside a window carrying a blue velvet bound book. As he dropped the book and turned to leave, Elena begged him not to go, but he had already disappeared. Sad, Elena walked down the mirrored hall as she watched her reflection, but the something caught her eye. The reflection stared back at Elena, but as she looked closer, Elena noticed that her eyes had a predatory, sly look about them, the same eyes that Vickie had in the cafeteria. All of a sudden the reflections gained a life, dancing and beckoning her in, but she ran down the hall through a door and into an ornate room. Looking around Elena knew exactly where she was; it was the Italian Renaissance and Elena was dressed in a brilliant gown that looked like fire. The two huge doors at the other end of the room swung open and Stefan appeared between them; or at least she thought it was Stefan until a closer look revealed Damon’s cruel eyes. Reaching out for her, Damon grabbed only the chain around Elena’s waist and was cut by a jeweled setting. Taking his finger to her lips, Elena replied to Damon through her mind and they began dancing. As they dance, the room around her fades and Damon inches toward her neck and bites her sweetly. Suddenly everything shattered and Elena found herself screaming in pain as she tried to bat away the crow thrashing at her neck.

The door to the bedroom swung open as Bonnie’s father fends off the crow with a broom. Throwing the crow out the window, Elena ran into Bonnie’s arms. As Elena tries to calm, Mr. McCullough questions why she had left the window open, but Elena protests that she didn’t. He was right though, the locks were unscrewed and no one could have done it from the outside. Trying to reassure Elena, Bonnie suggests that she might have been sleepwalking. A sudden revelation came over Elena and she retreats to the bathroom to collect herself. Looking at her fresh wounds, Elena gasped in shock at the two fresh puncture marks on her neck.

Memorable Quotes

Meredith: “The person who wrote this is five feet eleven inches tall, walks with a slight limp, and wears a false mustache,” Meredith intoned. (Pages 360)

Matt: “Am I going to give my care to the guy who stole my girlfriend and now wants to take a jaunt down south to get her some kind of special flowers she’s just got to have? Are you crazy?” (Page 363-364)

Stefan: “No, I’m not crazy,” he said quietly and turned to go.
Matt: “Neither am I,” Matt had said. “And I’d have to be crazy to turn my car over to you. Hell, no. I’m going with you.”
Stefan: By the time Stefan had turned back around, Matt was looking at the car instead of him, lower lip thrust forward in a wary, judicious pout.
Matt: “After all,” he’d said, rubbing at the flaking vinyl of the roof, “you might scrath the paint or something.” (Page 364)

Questions for consideration:

Why do you think that Stefan is traveling so far south to get vervain? How do you think he plans to protect Elena with it?

What do you think Elena’s dream meant? Is there some significance to it or was it just random?

How do you think Damon was able to get inside the McCullough house without an invitation and locked windows?

Did someone or something in this chapter take you by surprise?

Vampire Diaries: Chapter 9

As Matt and Stefan drive back toward Fell’s Church, Stefan considers just how grateful he is for someone like Matt. For the first time in five centuries, except Elena, Stefan felt acceptance and it made him almost feel human again.

Staring into the mirror, Elena thought about how stupid she was to warn Bonnie and Meredith not to invite Damon in for she now recalled that it was her who had invited him in. Deciding that she needed to go home, Elena began to pack her things when she saw a huge black feather on the white linen bed. Realizing that Bonnie was no safer than she was here, Elena begs Bonnie to come home with her and the McCullough’s succumb to Elena’s wishes. At home, Elena still couldn’t sleep as she lay awake next to Bonnie until dawn. That was when Elena heard the wheezing sound of Matt’s engine and she raced down to tackle Stefan. One look at the two boys told Elena that they needed to go inside for a deeper conversation.

As Matt slept on the living room couch, Stefan explained that the flowers were vervain and they would protect her from Damon’s influence; whether asleep or awake. Trying to choke back her tears or revelation realizing the gift is one night too late and she must not tell Stefan. Noticing a tear fall down her cheek, Stefan asks Elena what was wrong but she refuses to tell him; they would not fight over her. Lying, Elena says that she was simply worried about him and he trusts her words. As he explains the many ways to protect herself with the vervain, Elena mentions sharing it with Bonnie and Meredith. Sadness overcomes Stefan as he considers that he’d leave if it would help, but he fears that Damon would only stay now, because of her. Swearing Stefan to never leave, Elena and Stefan woke Matt up and she escorted them to the door.

As Elena and Bonnie walk to school, Bonnie retells a strange dream she had. In it Elena was standing under a quince tree and Bonnie was afraid of her. Elena had looked different than she did now, pale and glowing, as a crow flew toward her. She grabbed the bird with lightning speed and with a dangerous smile, twisted its neck. As she finishes, Bonnie explains that crows are an ill omen that can foretell death. Elena says that Bonnie probably had the dream because of the crow in Elena’s room, but Bonnie adds that she had the dream before they found the crow; before Elena woke up screaming.

At school, another purple note was attached to the school bulletin board, which simply read ‘Look in personals’.  As Bonnie and Elena stand perplexed, Meredith approaches with the school newspaper and their answer. There in the personal section of the Wildcat Weekly was another except from Elena’s diary. Both Bonnie and Meredith point out how petty this was and didn’t seem like something Damon would do. Whoever it was had knowledge of the school, knew Elena kept a diary, and knew the layout of Bonnie’s house. As the girls consider who it could be, it suddenly dawns on them; how could they not have seen it sooner? Of course, it had to be Caroline. Everything fit and with that revelation Elena was furious. The girls decide they will confront Caroline after school, but as they head toward the cafeteria Elena see’s Caroline red head bob off in the distance. Remembering how Caroline would take Stefan to the photography room, Elena made her way in cautiously.

Sneaking closer, Elena heard the whispering voice of two people; Caroline and Tyler Smallwood. They were conspiring to run Stefan out of town using Elena’s diary; after all it did prove that Stefan was in the cemetery the night the old man was attacked under Wickery Bridge. The plan was to have Elena elected the queen of the Founder’s Day celebration and they would use that day to unveil the truth. For Tyler it was not only vengeance on Stefan, but also on the town for ignoring his families claim as founders; Caroline, on the other hand, simply wants to humiliate Elena. Tyler continues as he admonished Caroline for leaving Elena clues that may lead her to them, but she doesn’t care.

Elena made her way out as Caroline and Tyler remained ‘preoccupied’. One hallway over, Elena leaned against the lockers to think and she finally understood her dreams. He had looked at her accusingly in the dreams as he threw Elena’s diary at her feet and of course he would, Elena’s diary proved that Stefan was at the scene of every crime that had occurred the last few months. She had to get that damn diary back no matter what.

Memorable Quotes

Matt: “Why? Were you thinking of saying something like that?”
Stefan: “Not really.”
Matt: “Good. Because if you did I’d probably deck you.” (Page 378)

Stefan: “If I thought it would so you any good, I’d leave. I wouldn’t expose you to Damon. But I don’t think he’d follow me if I went, not anymore. I think he might stay – because of you.” (Page 381)

Caroline: “Oh, who cares about who founded the town? All I want is to see Elena humiliated in front of the entire school.” (Page 386)

Questions for consideration:

Had you forgotten that Elena herself invited Damon into Bonnie’s house the night Yangtze was killed?

Were you surprised to find that it was Caroline and Tyler that were responsible for stealing Elena’s diary? Did you think Damon was involved at first?

How do you think Elena is going to get her diary back?

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
