Vampire Diaries S2 Episode 20 “The Last Day”-- Original Airing: April 28, 2011
Damon is lying in his bed, listening as Elijah, Elena, and Stefan speak in the living room about their plan to go after Klaus. Since the full moon is that night Elijah knows they can expect Klaus to seek to break the curse. Stefan asks Elijah about the curse since Elena had told him the sun and the moon curse is actually fake and the curse is only on Elijah. Elijah explains Klaus is a vampire born from a werewolf bloodline and the curse has kept his werewolf side dormant. But if Klaus breaks the curse he will be a hybrid. Damon walks in and asks (sarcastically) why they would be letting Klaus break in the curse in the first place then. He just thinks they should go after Klaus since they have Bonnie. Elena reminds him that Bonnie can’t use that much power or she’ll die. She tells Damon it’s not an option. Stefan asks Elijah how are they supposed to break the curse. Elijah tells him it’s pretty straight forward, they already know what the ingredients are: moonstone--a witch will channel the power of the full moon to release the spell that’s bound inside of the stone. After that Klaus being both werewolf and vampire will sacrifice one of each. Elena asks how does she fit into breaking the curse. Elijah explains she’ll find her part written in the ritual and pulls out a box. He tells Elena Klaus must drink the blood of the doppelganger until she dies. Stefan takes Elena’s hand. Elijah opens the box and pulls out a crystal bottle. He explains it’s an elixir he had gotten over five hundred years prior for Katrina. The elixir possesses mystical proprieties, having the ability to bring someone back from the dead. Damon scoffs at the idea: “That’s your plan?! A magical witch potion with no expiration date!” He turns and looks at Elena and tells her she can use John’s ring. Elijah explains the ring won’t work on Elena since she is a doppelganger and is a “supernatural occurrence.” Damon asks Elena what happens if the elixir doesn’t work. Elena: “Then I guess I’ll just be dead.” Damon looks at Stefan but Stefan just shrugs. Elena asks Elijah if he knows if Klaus has everything already prepared to break the curse. Elijah explains Klaus has been waiting over a thousand years to break the curse and if hasn’t already found a werewolf, he will be that night.
The scene switches to Tyler’s mother. She is on her phone leaving Tyler a message as she walks up the stairs in her house. She is asking him to return home, telling him she has been in an accident and needs him. Once she reaches the top of the stairs she looks up at the witch working for Klaus and asks why she had just said that. The witch looks at her and tells her it’s because she had a terrible fall, then throws her over the banister. Tyler’s mother smacks her head against the banister on the way down and crashes to the ground, unconscious.
The scene returns to Damon. He is standing outside drinking some type of alcohol. Stefan jokes it’s “the breakfast of champions.” Damon remarks he’s “surrounded by idiots” and needs all the help he can get. Stefan points out he isn‘t helping. Damon points out Elijah is an original vampire and one they tried to kill, does Stefan really believe him. Stefan becomes defensive and tells Damon what can he do, Elena already made her decision and wants to trust Elijah and he’s going to put his faith in her. Damon: “Why?! She’s gonna end up dead!” Stefan explains because Elena chose to trust him despite him being a vampire. Damon tells hi He also points out Elena chose to trust Damon too. Damon tells him then maybe Stefan shouldn’t be so sure about Elena’s instincts then. He finishes his drink and walks back into the house.
Elijah is still in the living room speaking with Elena. He wants to know why Elena is still so willingly to put herself in danger. Elena tells him because she is the key to breaking the curse and Klaus is in town because of her and if she doesn’t him then he is going to hurt people, it’s just that simple. Elijah tells her there is a possibility the elixir won’t work. Elena tells him she knows the chance she’s taking. Then they hear as Jenna yells “Get out!” Alaric is trying to tell her to calm down. Jenna is holding a crossbow aimed at Alaric when Elena and Stefan find them. Elena asks what’s going on. Alaric explains it’s really him, Klaus had let him go. Damon tells him to prove it. Alaric looks at Jenna and says: “Okay, uhh, the first time we spent the night together, Jeremy walked in right when I . . .” Jenna interrupts him and tells him she believes him. Stefan asks Alaric why Klaus let him go. Alaric tells him Klaus wanted him to deliver a message to them: “The sacrifice happens tonight.” Everyone looks at Elena. Elena turns and looks at Elijah, fear in her eyes.
Tyler’s mom wakes up in the hospital, her arm in a cast. She looks over and finds Tyler standing by the window, his back to her and calls his name. Tyler walks over to the bed and kisses her forehead. She’s happy he’s back.
Caroline shows up at Matt’s job at The Grill, sneaking up on him and scaring him. They make plans to have lunch together once Matt gets his break in an hour. Caroline leaves to run some errands before then. Matt walks over to a booth that’s hidden where Caroline’s mom is sitting and waiting. Caroline’s mom asks if she suspects anything. Matt says he doesn’t think so but he can’t pretend anymore. He’s been putting on the best show of his life and he’s pretty sure Caroline is either putting on the best show of her life too or she’s the same Caroline he knows and loves. But Caroline’s mom tells him that Caroline isn’t the same, she’s a vampire but Matt says he’s not even sure what that means. Caroline’s mom explains she had been raised with the knowledge of vampires and they have “no souls, no humanity.” Matt doesn’t believe Caroline is like that. Caroline’s mom says it’s all an act. She had trusted Damon, believed Damon was her friend and he’s a killer. She tells Matt they had killed his sister and what other proof does he need to know that they are evil. Matt tells her why hasn’t she done anything. Caroline’s mom says she needs more information and despite Caroline being a vampire she is still her daughter. Matt tells her Damon is the real problem, not Caroline. Caroline’s mom apologizes for involving him in everything and thanks him but says she’ll move forward on her own and leaves.
Stefan and Jenna and Elena are in the living room. Stefan is asking Alaric if he remembers anything that happened while he was with Klaus. Alaric tells him no, he just blacked out one minute and woke up three days later. He tells them Katherine is with Klaus and Stefan explains she is under compulsion. Damon had snuck Katherine some vervain but she can’t leave until Klaus tells her she can. Elena asks where Damon is. Jenna tells her she saw him go upstairs. Elena goes upstairs to search for Damon. She finds him in his room and asks why Damon had disappeared. Damon tells her he didn’t want to hear anymore about their stupid plan. Elena wants him to understand why she is willing to go along with it. Damon says why does it matter, clearly no one cares what he thinks. Elena tells him she’ll be fine. She will drink the elixir, Bonnie will kill Klaus,, and everything will finally be over. Damon points out IF the plan works. He is determined to find another way but Elena tells him there is no other way. Damon points out she is going to die and Elena reminds him because of the elixir she’ll come back to life but Damon says they isn’t a chance he is willing to take. But Elena takes his hand and tells him she is willing to take the chance, it’s her life, it’s her choice. Damon tells her he can’t lose her. Elena tells him he won’t. She turns to walk out of his room and Damon uses his vampire speed to cut in front of her. He has this crazy look in his eyes and whispers there is another way. He rips open his wrist and forces Elena to drink his blood.
Stefan flies into the room and throws Damon off of Elena. He yells at Damon, demanding to know what he had done to Elena. Damon explains he saved her. She is so hell bent on dying, at least this way he knows she’ll come back. Stefan gets up and snaps at him Elena will come back as a vampire. Damon tells him it’s better than nothing else. Stefan wants to know how he could take that choice away from her of all people. Elena screams out in disgusts. Damon looks down at Elena and says: “Go ahead, wish me an eternity of misery, believe me you’ll get over it.” Stefan gets enraged and attacks Damon, lunging him back against the wall. Damon lunges back toward Stefan, pinning him against the wall by holding a coat rack against Stefan’s throat. Damon: “Admit it, you just wish you had the balls to do it yourself.” (referring to making Elena into a vampire) Damon and Stefan begin fighting. Stefan knocks Damon to the ground with a series of punches. Damon shoves the coat rack through Stefan’s stomach. Stefan falls to his knees in pain. Elena pushes Damon back and yells at him to leave. Alaric and Jenna run into the room. Elena yells for Alaric to get Damon out. Damon leaves. Alaric tells Jenna to do downstairs and get some bags from the blood bank. Elena pulls the coat rack out of Stefan’s stomach. Stefan apologizes to Elena but Elena tells him to relax, everything is gonna be okay.
Damon walks back into the library where Elijah is. He pours himself a drink. Elijah says the elixir is useless now since he gave Elena vampire blood. Elijah tells Damon to tell Elena he will return at nightfall and they will precede as planned. Damon tells him they both know the elixir would have never worked. Elijah tells Damon his problem is that he can talk a good game but he doesn’t actually know anything. Elena will never forgive him and for a vampire that’s a very long time.
Stefan recovers after drinking some blood. Stefan thanks Alaric and Jenna. Alaric tells Stefan and Elena they’ll be downstairs if they need them. Alaric knows it’s a lot for Jenna to take in, he just wanted to protect her from everything but he should have known she could handle it. Jenna isn’t so sure she can. Alaric points out she already has. He knows they have a lot to talk about but Jenna cuts him off before he can finish. She tells him she’s glad he’s okay and they kiss.
Elena is angry. She doesn’t know why Damon would do something like that to her. Stefan knows they have never talked about her being a vampire before but Elena says it doesn’t matter now. Stefan says it does and tells her he wants her to go somewhere with him. Elena begins to refuse to leave the house but Stefan promises it’s not far and she agrees to go with him.
Tyler is looking over his mom. He walks out of the hospital room and finds Jules who had come to find him. She wants to know what he is doing. Tyler tells her he had to come back, it was for his mother. Jules tells him they need to go, they need to lock themselves up before nightfall because of the full moon. They leave the hospital and run into Caroline. Jules excuses herself. Tyler explains Jules is just watching out for him. Caroline asks if the two of them are friends now. Tyler explains Jules has been helping him. He asks Caroline how she is doing and Caroline changes the subject. She had heard about his mom and wanted to check on her. Tyler explains his mom will be fine. Caroline and Tyler have a bit of an awkward conversation for a few seconds trying to make small talk then Tyler says he has to go, Jules is waiting for him. Caroline can’t believe he’s leaving again. Tyler tells her he had left for a reason. Caroline says his explanation must have gotten lost in the mail along with his goodbye. Tyler opens his mouth to explain but instead tells her to take care of herself and turns to leave. Caroline falls to her knees in agony, hands moving to her head. Tyler turns to move back to her but falls to the ground as well in pain. Both of Klaus’s witches walk from behind the cars. The female witch stabs Caroline in the back with a knife knocking her unconscious.
Matt calls Caroline wondering where she is since they were supposed to meet up for lunch. He leaves a message telling her to call him since he needs to talk to her and it’s important. Damon walks into The Grill and motions for the bartender to pour him a drink. Alaric sits down beside him and says he’ll have the same as Damon. Damon admits he had screwed up with Elena. Klaus shows up and asks why Damon and Alaric look so down. Damon looks over and knows it’s Klaus. Klaus thanks Alaric for loaning him his body. Damon wants to know the reason Klaus has decided to stop by. Klaus tells him he’s heard that both Damon and Stefan “fancy his doppelganger.” Klaus just wanted to remind Damon not to do anything he’d regret. Damon laughs and thanks him for the advice. He asks Klaus if there’s any way he could convince him to postpone that night’s events. Klaus tells him he already has his vampire, he already has his werewolf, he has everything he needs. The ritual will take place that night. If Damon wants to live to see the next day then he better not do anything to screw up Klaus’s plans. Damon smirks and Klaus leaves. Damon sits back down and asks Alaric if he took Klaus’s werewolf out of the equation would Elena get over the fact that he tried to turn her into a vampire. Alaric tells him it won’t matter because he’ll be dead. Damon says without the werewolf Klaus can’t perform his ritual and he’ll have a month to butter Elena up before the next full moon. Alaric tells him he’ll still be dead. Damon asks him if he’ll help him. Alaric says Damon is gonna need his help.
Elena and Stefan are walking through the forest. Stefan leading her to a waterfall. He wants to talk to about what it’s like to be a vampire and how she’s feeling. Elena doesn’t want to talk about it. Stefan says it’s fine, it’s her choice. But since it’s a long way to the top of the waterfall they should probably talk. Elena wants to know why can’t he just do his vampire thing to take them up to the top. Stefan tells her it’s her last day as a human and he wants her to enjoy it.
Katherine is looking through the fridge for bags of blood but they are all empty. She hears the door being opened and finds Alaric standing on the other side. She mocks him and tells him “look who’s dumb enough to come back.” Alaric explains someone had to let him in and Damon shows up. Alaric invites him into the apartment. Katherine yells him is he trying to get her killed. Damon knocks her into the wall, wrapping his hand around her throat and tells her since he give her vervain she owes him a favor. He tells Alaric to leave and to get back to the house to watch out for Elena and make sure she just doesn’t hand herself over. Katherine wants to know what he’s talking about. Damon wants to know where Klaus is keeping his werewolf. Damon tells her dead werewolf, no ritual. Katherine says no way, Klaus will him and everyone he has ever talked to. Damon thinks she should be happy since it buys her another month. Katherine tells him Klaus isn’t planning on sacrificing her. She tells him Klaus already has Caroline and Tyler so she’s in the clear. Damon charges after her but Katherine tells him she is just trying to keep herself alive long enough to get away from Klaus. Damon asks her what she would think if he told her Elena had vampire blood in her system. Katherine is not happy. Damon points out if Elena is turned into a vampire how would she feel having to compete for Stefan with Elena forever. Katherine is quiet a moment then tells Damon Klaus locked Caroline and Tyler away in the tomb.
Caroline finally wakes up. She is chained to the wall. Tyler is sitting across from her, chained to a wall as well. Caroline tries pulling out the chains but Tyler tells her not to bother he already tried. Caroline knows the witches had use vervain on the knife to get to her. Tyler asks who they are. Caroline tells him they’re probably with Klaus. Tyler doesn’t understand what’s going on. Caroline whispers frightened he should have never came back.
Stefan and Elena are still walking. Elena asks Stefan what’s the best part about being a vampire. Stefan tells her the best part is “feeling like you could do anything, be anyone. Beautiful things are more beautiful. Everything is heightened. You love more powerful.” Elena asks what’s the worse thing about being a vampire aside from the blood issue. Stefan tells her: “Anger becomes rage. When you’re sad, you despair. Grief, loss, can cripple you. That’s why so many of us turn our emotions off, It just becomes too overwhelming. For a while for me, the good just wasn’t worth the bad.” Elena asks how long did it take for him to learn to handle both and Stefan says he’s still trying.
Katherine is pouring herself a cup of coffee. Klaus walks into the apartment. Katherine asks him if everything is okay. Klaus asks her what has she been doing. Katherine explains she’s just been making coffee and if he would like some. Klaus wraps his hand around her throat and lifts her up. He compels her to tell him the truth and Katherine tells him she’s just been making coffee. Klaus let’s her go and tells her to take off her bracelet. He then tells her to go stand by the window where the sun shines. Katherine points out she’ll burn. He tells her that’s the point. Katherine walks over to the window and her skin starts burning, she screams out in agony. Klaus let’s her remain there for a couple of seconds then tells her to move. Katherine speeds into a dark corner of the apartment, gasping. Klaus murmurs he was wrong and tells Katherine he needs her to do something for him.
Damon is walking toward the tombs. The male witch working for Klaus shows up and tells Damon did he really think Klaus would leave Tyler and Caroline unprotected. Damon jokes it was wishful thinking and attacks the male witch, knocking him to the ground, choking him. But the witch throws Damon off of him with his power and starts hurting Damon. A shot rings out. Matt is standing behind the male witch with his rifle. As the witch falls to his knees, Damon jumps up and breaks his neck. Damon looks at Matt confused. He wants to know what Matt is doing. Matt asks him where Caroline is. Matt aims the gun at Damon and Damon mocks surrenders, moving slowly toward Matt explaining he only wants to save Caroline. Damon grabs Matt’s gun and knocks him over the head with it in one fluid motion.
Caroline is explaining everything about the curse and Klaus to Tyler. Tyler asks if she thinks Klaus took them to kill them for the curse. Caroline believes so. Caroline asks Tyler why he had left without saying goodbye to her. Tyler asks her if she really wants to talk about that now. Caroline jokes if they’re gonna die, she might as well know the truth. Why did Tyler leave her. Tyler thought Caroline hated her. He thought she deserved better than having someone like her in his life. Caroline tells she was angry at him, she hurt, Tyler had turned his back on her when she really needed him but she could never hate him. The opening to the tomb opens and Damon walks in. Damon tells her her boyfriend is outside with a rifle full of wooden bullets and she has some explaining she needs to do. He yanks off her chains. Caroline is surprised, she had never told Matt anything. Damon grabs Caroline to leave but Caroline refuses to go without Tyler. Damon looks down at Tyler and asks him how fast he could get the hell away from them since it’s getting dark soon. Tyler says he needs to get to his family cellar, he can lock himself up. Caroline offers to help him. Damon sets him free and reminds Tyler not to make Damon regret his decision.
Elena and Stefan finally make it to the top of the waterfall. Elena still looks afraid and worried. Stefan tells her she can say it, she can say what she’s been wanting to say since they had left. Elena says there’s no point. Stefan confesses he had thought about giving her vampire blood to survive a bunch of times. If it was his choice he would want to be with Elena with forever. Elena wanted to know why Stefan had never said anything. Stefan says because it would have been selfish for him to ask her for that. Elena points out that didn’t stop Damon. Stefan agrees Damon should never had done what he did but Damon had done it because he loves her. Elena doesn’t believe Damon knows what real love is. She is only seventeen, she doesn’t really know what real love is. Stefan looks hurt and Elena explains she knows that she loves him. But her future and their lives together was stuff she was supposed to deal with little by little. She was supposed to have a chance to grow up. But now all her choices are gone. Stefan whispers for her to say it. Elena says she doesn’t want to be a vampire, she never wanted to be one and starts crying. Stefan hugs her.
Caroline, Damon, and Tyler climb out of the tomb. Matt has woken up from Damon’s previous assault and Caroline accuses Damon of hitting Matt. Damon reminds her Matt was the one with the wooden bullets. Tyler cries out and Caroline asks if he’s alright. Damon tells Caroline to “grab boy wonder” (referring to Matt--don’t you just love Damon’s sarcastic wit *hehe*).
Stefan and Elena drive back up to the house. Klaus shows up. Stefan pulls Elena behind him. Klaus says he had been nervous and had thought Elena had gone off and done something stupid. Klaus asks Elena if she’s ready. Elena tells him she is and starts walking to Klaus but Stefan stops her. Klaus says if he was Stefan he wouldn’t try anything, there’s no need for him to die too. Elena tells Stefan everything is fine, there’s no reason for him to get hurt and gives him a knowing look. Elena kisses him and whispers she loves him. Stefan whispers he loves her too. He kisses her. Elena tells him to close his eyes. She let’s go of his hand and when Stefan opens his eyes again Elena and Klaus are gone.
Stefan storms into the house. Alaric runs into him and is relieved to find him, he had gotten to the house and was worried when he found it empty. Stefan asks where Damon is and calls him. Damon is walking through the forest trying to get to Tyler’s family cellar with the others. Stefan tells him Klaus took Elena. Damon tells Stefan he’ll take care of it and hangs up. Tyler begins changing into a werewolf. He tells Caroline to go but Caroline tells him everything will be okay. Tyler jumps into the air to attack her but Damon jumps onto of him and they topple to the ground. Tyler bites Damon’s arm and Damon throws him off of him. Tyler yells for them to leave. Damon tells Caroline and Matt to lock themselves in the cellar and hands them the wooden bullets. Caroline and Matt take off. Tyler changes into a werewolf. Damon takes off.
Klaus returns to the apartment. He doesn’t understand what’s taking his male witch so long to return. Katherine says she doesn’t know. Damon storms into the room. Damon tells Klaus he has come to tell him he needs to postpone his little ritual. Klaus looks bored and tells him they’ve already had that conversation. Damon tells him that was before he took care of his werewolf and killed his witch. Damon tells Klaus he knew he would kill him for it but he didn’t care. It was all his fault. Klaus tells Catherine to excuse them. Klaus knew someone would try to stop him. He tosses his phone to Damon and shows him Jules who is tied up. Klaus says the nice thing about werewolves is that they travel in packs. Klaus tells Damon he has spent a thousand years trying to break the curse and he’s learned a few things. First rule, always have a back up plan. Back up werewolf, back up witch and Damon finishes for him back up vampire. Klaus tells him he has that covered too.
Caroline and Matt finally make it to the cellar and run inside. They lock themselves up inside a gate, Caroline wrapping the chains around it to keep it closed. Tyler storms in already a werewolf. He jumps toward the gate, wanting to attack Caroline. Caroline and Matt jump back.
Damon is unconscious on the ground. Katherine is slapping him in the face, telling him to wake up. Damon asks what the hell happened. Katherine tells him Klaus has already left to perform the ritual. She apologizes but she had to do it or else Klaus would have known she was on vervain. Damon doesn’t know what she means. Katherine says Klaus made her do it, he made her call her out because he needed another vampire. Damon asks her who did she call. Katherine hesitates. Damon grabs her arm and demands to know who did she call.
Elena is following Clau’s female witch. They arrive to the ritual site. Elena finds Jenna lying on the ground and runs to her. She checks for a pulse but Jenna doesn’t have one. Elena turns to the female witch and asks why did Klaus kill her. She had done everything Klaus had told her, why would he kill Jenna. Jenna suddenly bolts upright, gasping for air. The female witch explains Jenna isn’t dead, she’s in transition.
Damon gets off of the ground and asks Katherine why didn’t Klaus use him. Katherine says Klaus couldn’t, he said Damon was as good as dead. Damon doesn’t know what that’s supposed to mean. Katherine grabs his arm and asks him what is this Damon. Damon looks down at his arm and realizes he was bit by a werewolf, the only thing that can kill a vampire.
